Bright Kites Young Ambassador Programme 2023 - Donor update

As we reflect on the incredible journey we embarked upon to bring Santi, Nicolle, Natalia and Nicolas to London this summer, we are filled with immense gratitude for your support and generosity. Your sponsorship played a pivotal role in bringing these four students from Colombia to London, and we wanted to share the impact your contribution has had on their live:

Students' interests and ambitions:

Progress in English and self-confidence :

The transformation in these students' English proficiency and self-confidence was truly remarkable. Their Bayswater teachers relayed how over the month, they not only improved their language skills but also became confident enough to assist their peers in class. The immersive experience in London, conversing with fellow students and teachers, played a crucial role in their linguistic and interpersonal development.

How we raised funds and our activities:

Alongside your support, we organized various fundraising events, including a volunteering opportunity at Glastonbury (covering the sponsorship of one student) and marathons. In addition to sponsoring the four students in London, we were able to fund a month-long intensive English programme at the Colombo Americano in Medellin for Karen, who couldn't join us in London this year due to unforeseen circumstances with her legal guardians.

This summer, an unexpected opportunity arose when the Colombian Consul to the UK, Marisol Rojas, hosted our students at the Colombian Consulate (see picture below). They had a day serving as diplomats, shadowing Mrs. Rojas and gaining insights into the support provided to Colombians in London. This experience was truly transformative for them, and we are actively working on building a partnership with the Consulate to secure funding and connect with the National Departments for Education and Culture.

Students' Achievements Post-Programme:

Since their return, the students have achieved remarkable milestones. Nicolas won a regional youth prize for science, Santi was nominated for a Youth Ambassador scheme in Texas, Natalia showcased a video of her experience in London to the school and wider community, and Nicolle initiated a project to share her London experiences through art and music.

Testimonials (translated)

1. “This exchange broadened my horizons and taught me the importance of cultural exchange. I now share my experiences at school, promoting understanding and unity among my peers.” - Natalia

2. “I have been developing two wonderful projects in gratitude for my London experience. The first involves talks on topics like scholarships, youth's future expectations, and bilingualism. The second is a community benefit project at my school, improving spaces for children through donations and painting.” - Santi

3. “Santiago's impact in our school has been significant. We've invited him to speak on the radio and visit other classes. He's implementing an initiative, painting a mural with a group of students, contributing to our community.” - Diana (Santi's teacher)

4. “I'm currently preparing English classes for lower grades and working on a science project to implement augmented reality in study books, aiming for a dynamic and more understandable education.” - Nicolas

5. “This journey marked a turning point in my life. The experience and knowledge I gained were wonderful. Now, I believe even more in the power of youth, determination, and discipline in making dreams come true.” - Santi

6. “The Nicolle who left was not the same as the one who returned. She appeared more mature, showed improvement in English, socialized more, and gained valuable independence. As a mother, I witnessed the positive changes this trip brought to my daughter.” - Yulieth (Nicolle’s mum)

A glimpse into our 2024 winners

Your support has been instrumental in shaping the futures of these amazing students, and we are eager to continue this impactful journey together. We look forward to partnering with you again this year and making a lasting difference in the lives of more students.

We recently selected our 4 winners for this year’s London programme. Once again the applications were nothing shy of excellent and it was difficult to narrow down the choices to just four. Below, you will find the video applications of each applicant as well as a short introduction to. Needless to say they are very excited for this opportunity!

You can see each video application by following the links below:

Nelson from Cali : Nelson is 15 years old and excited to go to London so he can improve his pronunciation, reading and writing skills! He is always supporting his classmates in improving their English and every year he is one of the lead performers in his school's theater shows.

Dana from Pereira: Valery is 15 years old and is an active participant in her school’s theater and robotics group. She loves singing and dancing but her favorite hobby is writing. Her dream is to travel the world one day and write about it. She is excited to go to London to fulfill her dream!

Valery from Cali : Valery is 15 years old and is passionate about fashion, specifically eco/sustainable fashion. She knows that going to London is an opportunity of a lifetime and will open doors to many opportunities in the future.

Miguel from Pereira: Miguel is 15 years old and enjoys playing Basketball and chess. In his free time he volunteers at a number of non profit organizations and truly believes that there is more joy in giving than receiving. He is very passionate about English and can’t wait to improve his vocabulary and learn about a new culture in London.

To conclude this update, I'm thrilled to share a heartwarming video which can be found here capturing one of our applicants' reactions upon learning of their selection for the programme. Thank you for joining us on this journey alongside the students of Colombia. We look forward to connecting with you soon!

Best,

The Bright Kites Foundation team
