The Bright Kites Foundation 29/04/2019 - 01/09/20
Charity Report of the trustees for the year ending 1 September 2020
The trustees of The Bright Kites Foundation Charity present their annual report and accounts for the year ending 1 September 2020 and confirm they comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011, the trust deed and the Charities SORP (FRS 102).
OUR AIMS
Through our London-based English language programme we aim to empower Colombia’s future generations. Our fellows become ambassadors in their schools and communities. We work to help alleviate some of the educational inequalities faced and inspire students to dream big.
OUR OBJECTIVES
To advance the education of Colombian students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds ("lower strata neighbourhoods") in the subject of English by such means as the trustees deem appropriate, in particular by providing these students with a travel grant to enable them to take part in an English language programme in the UK which they could not otherwise afford and providing mentoring support and organising activities which develop their cultural awareness and people skills to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individual.
REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
April - June 2019
In this time period we:
- Fundraised final funds needed for London travel costs and flights. Two of our trustees
James and Jordan ran the Stockholm marathon and we organised a Latin live music night and series of pub quizzes, including at the Regent’s University London student bar.
-
Organised logistics regarding incoming student ambassadors arrival in July. Finalised Visa and passport process with study abroad agency Extudia.
-
Received a grant from Greenheart Travel.
July - September 2019
In this time period we:
-
Welcomed our first 2 students Salomé and Hamilton to the UK and they embarked on their 1 month Junior English programme at Bayswater College.
-
Organised a Sunday activity series (aside from their school trips to Oxford, Brighton etc.) such as a trip to Wembley Stadium and a day out shadowing a London tube driver on the Metropolitan line.
-
Brought together Colombian adult students and locals with our students on a Latino Picnic in Holland Park.
-
Introduced Salomé and Hamilton to Chevening Ambassador and Founder of Colombian NGO Get Up and Go Luisa Romero - opportunity to ask about university scholarships in the UK.
-
Filmed a video of the students in Hyde Park on their final day in London with videographer Orlando del Maestro.
October - December 2019
In this time period we:
-
Worked with Salome and Hamilton to promote language in their schools through a series of presentations about their time in the UK, cultural events and Q&As
-
Launched the 2020 ambassador programme applications in 4 schools in the cities of Medellin, Pereira and Cali. Our partner schools are now IE San Pablo (Medellin), I.E Aquilino Bedoya (Pereira), I.E Celmira Bueno (Cali) and I.E Alvaro Echeverry Perea.
January - March 2020
In this time period we:
-
Confirmed 12 volunteer places for Glastonbury festival.
-
Organised a Valentine’s themed ‘Blind Date Night’ fundraiser in London*.
-
Met with potential future donors Dave and Jan Pointer who agreed to sponsor 2 students in the 2020 programme.
-
From information given in application forms, videos in English and teacher recommendations, we shortlisted 4 Colombian students, Luis Angel, Maria José, Juan Esteban and Tomás, to come to London as Bright Kites Ambassadors.
-
Started VISA and passport application process with support from partner study abroad agency Extudia and language school Bayswater College, who receive our students for the month-long immersion programme.
-
Reached out to Colombian airline Avianca to discuss funding opportunities. Unfortunately we were not eligible for their schemes.
To note: Still chasing Go Fund Me r.e cheque.
April - June 2020
In this time period we:
-
Had to make the informed decision due to COVID 19 to postpone the Ambassador programme to 2021.
-
Contacted the student ambassadors, parents, key actors in the participating schools and our partner study abroad agency Extudia to make them aware of the rollover.
-
Decided to pause efforts on the charity whilst we dealt with this difficult period. Due to personal issues affecting the team whether that was work-related or family illness, we made the decision to focus on trustee mental health and wellbeing, whilst still checking in with the Colombian students during this time.
July - September 2020
In this time period we:
-
Worked with digital marketing expert Lizzie Pinnock to redesign the Foundation website.
-
Focused on content creation and blogs for the website.
-
Had a meeting with Charlotte Heymans, a former employee of Heart for Change Colombia, who sent out our details in an alumni newsletter to boost awareness of our mission with the English teaching community.
FUTURE PLANS
-
Virtual programme for 2020 ambassadors in 2021 due to COVID 19
-
