East Lane Theatre Club CIO Annual Report

Background:
East Lane Dramatic Society was established in 1936 , performing in a local school and church hall. They leased some land and a tennis pavilion from Brent Council and developed their own premises to include a 75-seat theatre in 1989. Further developments provided new toilet facilities, costume and set storage. In due course, East Lane Dramatic Society became East Lane Theatre Club.
East Lane Theatre Club (ELTC) became a Charity in April 2019 and has continued to provide open membership to the people of Brent and surrounding areas to stimulate an interest in the theatre and to encourage and instruct members in all facets of dramatic art with a view to presenting productions to the public, or audiences restricted to Club members.

Summary of the year From 31[st] May 2021 to 31[st] May 2022
Yet another extra-ordinary year; Covid restrictions stopped all the theatre's activities and face to face meetings. All business has been conducted online until mid August 2021.
The Club members stayed in contact with regular Zoom meetings, from simple chats to quiz nights and play readings.
Once restrictions were being lifted and the onus was being moved onto individuals to self-report if they were unwell. To ensure we could safely open up the theatre again, the trustees put in place many new practices for covid safety. The trustees also decided to limit the season to two shows this season to avoid overloading the members and to avoid expensive costs if Covid became a more serios problem again.
The Christmas double bill, comprising two coarse acting plays, Pride at Southanger Park and Cinderella by Michael Green. From extensive leafletting and advertising, we managed to attract three new members, and with such a large cast it was incredible that we only had a couple of absences due to covid illness.
What did become apparent was that we had lost a fair number of our audience over the 2 dark years with attendance being only 65% attendance and as we decided to only put on the show for 6 performances overall we made a small loss.
Our second production Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward, bought two previous members back to our stage and also one new member. The play over the six nights managed a respectable 81% attendance and delivered a small profit.
To help minimise some costs Scenesetter, our newsletter, stayed online and kept us all up to date with jokes and anecdotes. The trustees would like to thank everyone who contributed to the zoom evenings and to Scenesetter ; it has really helped to maintain the Club spirit.
A large amount of time and money has been spent improving the theatre and café area, with a covered accessible entrance now completed, and the emergency lighting updated.
The Lease for the original building and land has now expired and we are negotiating with Brent Council over the renewal. It is expected that this will take many months due to the backlog of work the Council has.
Like everyone else, there are many rising costs that affect the Club, but we have managed to maintain the ticket price the same as the previous year.
Conclusion
Having due regard to the Commission’s public benefit guidance, the trustees are confident that East Lane Theatre Club is being managed efficiently but owing to the Covid restrictions our operations were significantly curtailed, but we have still managed to return to a profitable status this year.
