Next Meal.. An Introduction. Next Meal grew out of Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen in North London. Volunteers at the soup kitchen realised that just as sMt phone technology can help users find theii way to a cinema or a testaurant, so it might be adapted to direct the user to the nearest centIe providing hclp and a hot mc21. Out of this simple idea, Next Meal was bom. A database was created into a website contsining the locations of soup kitchens all around the UK and increasingly in aties outside the UK too. A simple catd was ptoduced signposiing the wcbsltc. The intention was to encourage a different conversation between a street homeless person, and the person who mght otherwise be a passer-by. Using the website and a smart phone, ditcctions to a place where help and food might be provided, alongside or instead of a coffee or a sandwich. Next Meal might also help the convetsation between the street homeless and ptofessionals whose work brings them into contact with foi example the police, ot council employees, medical professionals or people who n]n traffic infrastructure ot othet places whete the street homeless might be encOunte(L The database 2nd the website wcrc alteady well advanced when charitable status was achieved on 29 April 2019. Duting the first yeat the board of Trnstees was establishel and a fim(ling partheiship was achieved through Next Meal's majoi fundeis, city stockbrokets, Peel Hunt. The charity sought to establish its Fislon and long terni p12ns, including seeking and finding support amongst concerned politici2ns. A launch was platmed to take place in the Houses of Parliamen¢ but was delayed by the December 2019 Genetal Election. A fresh date was fixed and a fantastic launch took place in February 2020, just before the UK onset of the Covid 19 pandemic. As the pandemic took hold, the UK government arr2ngcd for most street homeless peoplc to be evacuated from the Stteets and into temporary accommodation. There were far fewer people on the StteeL both homdess and pedestrians. M2ny soup kitchens dosed. Next Meal has had to adapt to mcet these challenges, has becn refming its plans, enhancing its website, and focusing on how it might fither its charitable objects in the aftermath of the pandemic. Executive have focused also on direct 2SSlStance to the homdess extended by Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen. During the year to ApIil 2024, Martin Stone in his Next Meal capacity, but also iti co-operation with the Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen deepened the earlier connections with vaiious charitable ptovision in Burnleyj delivering principally food but also other necessaries to Burnley. This worl and developing connections in the Butnley atca, enabled Mafiin to identify and explore the possibility of using geo-thernial heating technology to ptovide healing via the extenslve network of disused mitics under Burnley. Neal Meal resolved to pern]it Martin to contitiue geo-thernial community exploratory work in Budey on behalf of Next Meal, recognising that though on the fringes of its constitutional charitable objects, the activity was within the genetal scope of the public benefit and the relief of povetty of the finanaally disadvantaged. The work in this field commenced in the to 2022 continued duting the eady part of the year to 2024, and has induded meeiings involving Bumley based chatitics, politicians and industries looking to come together in ways that might enable the project to advance. Contact was also established with vatious schools in the area, and visits were undertaken looking to bulld interest in the pioject. By the later part of the year ending April 2024 Martin had succeeded in bringing together various stakc holders who might be interested in proeSsIng the project. Mee1ings wete hdd. Stakeholdets in Burnley continue to pursue gteen solutions and geothermal extraction is still part of the Butnley Council Climate Changc Strategy. Through Martin's initiative, Next Me21 is pleased to have played a patt in encoutaging this scrntiny of the options. During the yeat ending April 2U24, Next Me21 looked again at its intended inittal offeiing, and looked to establish connections vjith Transport for London and Network Rail with a view to encouraging stafE of each to use the Next Meal facility as a way to signpost homdess peIsons on d]e iail infrastructure away fiorn stations and towards provision where assistance might bc obtained. Thcse strengthening connections ate en2bling Next Meal to tefocus on its initial role, and by the time of writing this report, have en2bled Martin to establish a strong working rdationship with rdevant staff at Paddington Station. Chari Strncture .' The charity fimctions are divided between the Tnjstees and the Executive. As at 5 Aptil 2024, the Trnstecs are the above named and theit functions included the oversight and suppott of the fi]nctions of the Executive. The Exccutive comptise Marrin Stone (Chief Executive), Ralph Hinton and Oli R0xbUh. Duting the year ending Apiil 2024 Peatl Walker was assisting Next Meal in its social media presence. The role of the Executive is to execute the charity activities decided upon by the Trnstees in consultation with the Executive. Occasional meetings were held to this end during the yeat to April 2024. Mattin Stone is in day to day charge of the operations of Next Meal, and is supported in that by the other members of the Executive. Oli Roxburgh, the oiiginator of the website, has a Particul role iti the provision of on-line support, and Ralph Hinton with the mainte112nce 0£ and communications with the soup kitchens teptesented on the database. Through the populating of the website database, it came to be appreciated th2t many people running soup kitchens all round the country appreciated becon]ing a p2rt of the Next Mcal network. A regulat ncwslctter and blog were established fot the purposes of supporting soup kitchens, and spreading exPience and learning. Connections with YlouS soup kitchens around the country have been establishcd and nurtured, Next Meal consideting the support of soup kitchens a way in wch it might further its charitable putposes. During the Ye ending April 2024 Martin commenced a blog intended to litth soup kitchens across the countty. In July 2023 Next Meal held its first Annu21 Conference in Stsfford. Some 40 people attended from aosS the coulltry, a testthent to Martin's powers of motivation. Howevet, in light of the great expenditure of time on the part of Martin Stone, the Trustees considered it appropiiate that he ought receivc some remuneration fot his time incurred. In 2024, Next Meal made payments to by way of the Iefimd of expenses incurred.
