## **CHURCHWARDEN’S ANNUAL REPORT**

## **Churchwardens Annual Report All Saints Church Belhus Park**

How another year has passed by I am not sure, but here we are in April 2026. So many of us continue to use the pandemic as a timeline. In my opinion there are still many aspects of life that are not back to how they were before March 2020. It is important to celebrate and focus on the positives rather than dwell on the negatives.

We continue to have a steady congregation of 25 – 30 people each Sunday and occasionally reach the upper 30’s. We have welcomed a new family who are very much involved in the life of All Saints. Sadly, we continue to lack children and as they are the Church of the future it would be lovely to encourage more young people through the door.

We had our summer and Christmas Fayres which bought in a lot of people from the local community. It is a time for us to chat and liaise with people that we would not ordinarily see. Many people express how they look forward to these events and come every year. As well as being part of our outreach these events help us to raise much needed funds to pay our finance bills, which continue to increase year by year. We continue to pay as much of the parish share as we can. We hold regular Coffee, Cake and Chat events regularly and hold pre-loved sales. These do not bring in huge amounts of money but again give us the opportunity to meet people and for the congregation to spend time together in fellowship with one another. We continue to run our quiz evenings.

The fundraising for our new toilet/kitchen area continues to be a work in progress.

Our Carol and Crib and Christingle service were both well attended. Again, we see regular people at these, and many say how they look forward to coming and it is part of their Christmas traditions.

Our Mothering Sunday children’s workshop went well, it is always lovely to see some familiar faces. One little girl said, “I hope the lady with the biscuits is here.”

## **Clergy**

Sadly, we said farewell to Father Matt Drummond. Several of us attended his licensing at his new parish. Thank you, Reverand Tara Frankland, for being our constant and ensuring things run as smoothly as possible, which we appreciate is not without its challenges. It is impossible to please everyone all the time. Consistency gives us a feeling of security. Our connection with many of our local schools continues.

**4 |** P a g e

## **Services**

The congregation seems to have adjusted to having communion fortnightly and the attendance at Morning Prayer and the service of Prayer and Praise have increased. It would be lovely to see some baptisms and a wedding.

Bell ringing continues on Remembrance Sunday at All Saints although the main service of remembrance takes place at St. Nicholas South Ockendon. We celebrated Harvest festival.

## **Activities and Groups**

We have a regular bible study group on Tuesday evening facilitated by Henry. The craft group continues to meet in Church on Tuesday from 2 pm – 4 pm.

Thank you to everyone who plays a part in keeping All Saints Church running. Every task that you do is important to keep us present in the community.

## **St Michael’s Church, Aveley**

## **Fabric**

## **St Michael’s**

The church is in a good state of general repair with nothing of note visible that needs attention. There is of course, the minor issue of some long term patchy dampness within the south aisle and immediately above some of the heaters. However, the situation has improved over the year and will continue to do so going forward. The east and west walls in the porch are undergoing the same process of drying out. The situation is closely monitored and will be reviewed at the next QI. Other areas of walls that were previously showing signs of dampness have dried out well. It is worth pointing out that the drying time is regulated by the thickness of the wall.

The roof and wastewater goods around the church are in good order and are reasonably clear of debris. Over the last few years we have seen an increase in lichen on the sheltered sections of the rooves which compromise the gutters and down pipes.

**The graveyard:** the graveyard is well kept by Thurrock Council but somewhat erratic in the frequency of attendance by the cleaning and greening team. We are due the inspection of the mature trees in the graveyard in 2026 along with pollarding and pruning of the row of trees along the north entrance to the church.

**Memorial Garden:** The memorial garden is nearing completion. We are now waiting for the formation of the central Celtic stone cross to be manufactured and installed also the addition of two donated benches and landscaping with sensory plants and low-level shrubs to soften the environment and hopefully adding some sense of serenity.

**Proposed New Church Hall:** our attempt to further our proposal to build a new church hall in the graveyard has been shelved for now whilst we concentrate on the development at our former church hall site at Mill Road.

It would be fair to say that we have been well supported by the DAC in our endeavours to get planning consent for the church hall so I take this opportunity to thank the DAC for their continued support.

**Boundary:** Keeping the boundaries fully maintained by the Council is an ongoing project for us. However, the boundary has been well maintained throughout the year.

**5 |** P a g e

**Church services:** The good news is that we have seen consistent growth in church attendance over the last year for which we are heartened. We continue to include as many members of the congregation as possible in taking part in the ministry of worship each Sunday. This has brought out some interesting gifts and talents in the services and in other ways which are not service related but for which we are blessed. As a congregation, we have reacted well to the group services every fifth Sunday and well supported at Morning Prayer every other Sunday. We thank Helen and Andrew for rotating the Sunday services in leadership at the moment and we will hopefully add another leader to the team at some point.

**Fundraising events:** we opened the church to fundraising events twice over the year, starting with the Spring Fayre which went off very well indeed, raising much needed unrestricted funds. We also opened up for the Christmas Fayre which was well attended with many first timers. We were yet again blessed with much sterling support from family, friends and new people who offered their support in setting up, manning stalls and providing goods for both events. We continue to raise funds for all our projects. The Sum Up machine is working very well while more people now trust the machine to support their giving. We are doing our best to get the best from that service. Again, thanks to everyone for their contributing to church funds and projects.

**Outreach and Social events:** The Saturday morning drop-in is going well. It still serves its purpose by making the church space available to everyone. We have had the usual surprise visits from many people who had strong ties with the church and no longer live in the parish. Many of them tell of the strong ties with their parents, grandparents and their own time in and around the church. Many thanks to Joan Gibson, Joan is the go-to person with anything to do with the Saturday morning drop-in. She also doubled up as church guide. She made all this community service possible to so many people throughout the year whatever the weather. There is Nigel who is on hand to open and lock up the building and make it presentable to everyone, not to forget the work he does keeping the main path to the church presentable as well as outside and around the church.

Anne and John Copeland played a big part in the Thursday drop-in and friendship afternoon as well as leading at the fundraising events **.** The numbers at the drop-in have increased with new regular members who are also doers.

We are still encouraged and blessed by our contact with Sunnyside assisted living complex. Members from Sunnyside form an important part of our church family as well as playing their part in church life. Most of their carers who attend church services with their charges are from non-Christian background but remain throughout the service and also attend the community events.

Foodbank has a special place on Saturdays as it gives this valuable service to our community and beyond.

Thanks to Tara for singlehandedly running the service whilst also running the St Stephen’s Foodbank as well on a Friday. There she is fortunate to have a supporting team to help.

It was so good to have Foodbank back at St Michael’s in 2025

Michaelmas and the harvest celebrations went well and were well attended.

**The Church Hall Development:** we are fortunate to have at last won planning consent for the project. We have also completed the site survey and feasibility study which was positive about the development and its future.

**6 |** P a g e

Winckworth Sherwood Solicitors, who are the legal team for the Diocese of Chelmsford, are now our new legal team on the development project in Mill Road; Unfortunately, we parted company on good terms with our previous legal team at Gepps Solicitors in Chelmsford.

Winckworth Sherwood will now commence by drafting a new Heads of Terms which will form the contract between the Church and the developer which is Church View Estate. We are now looking forward to 2026 when hopefully, building work will commence.

**Finance** : our finances are on a timely upward trajectory, yet not fast enough to meet all our expenses such as the family Share. There is still room for improvement. Hopefully we can revive our stewardship giving scheme in the coming year (2026). The card reader is playing its part in encouraging more people to give and to increase their giving. The parish giving scheme is also playing its part in planned giving but unfortunately we have not yet reached a high enough percentage of givers as in other parishes around the country. We will continue to advertise its merit and the ease in which it serves the giver and the church.

**Appreciation and Thanks:** we appreciate the efforts and dedication in the service we received from Tara and from Matt. We are mindful of the efforts needed to care for everyone in our parish, especially during holy week and festivals. One cannot legislate against sickness and the flow of funerals, yet Tara’s dedication and hard work kept the team on track.

Thank you to everyone for their love, care and devotion to the church, and to Helen Antony in her first year as churchwarden. Thanks also to my fundraising team including, Carol Elliot, John and Anne Copeland, Ann Lee and Doreen Proctor and Sue and the rest of the Copeland family, just to name a few. The spring Fayre and Christmas Fayre would not happen without them. Thank you to everyone at St Michael’s, your support is much valued.

As a Parish, I must give a big thank you to Sue Stamp our PCC secretary and Team music director. Sue, you are much appreciated by us all. Thank you to Henry and Glynis. Henry supports us spiritually and Glynis has other tasks including the important work of community outreach. You are all loved and valued.

**Events for 2026:** Our Spring Fayre will be on 30th May. Michaelmas is on 27[th] September. We are hosting the 2026 harvest lunch in October unless someone else comes forward to take it on. Christmas Fayre is pencilled in for 28[th] November.

**Summary:** we are thankful for God’s blessings, mercy and guidance throughout a busy year. We managed to achieve most of the things we set out to do and are still working on the others through faith and prayers. We are blessed with love and support of so many people of good will. May 2026 be God led. Please pray for our clergy and our team.

God bless

Demus

## **Churchwarden’s Report St Nicholas’ Church, South Ockendon 2025**

2025 was truly the most challenging of years for St Nicholas. Having been informed of our success in bidding for funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and starting the urgent works needed to save the tower, the funding simply did not arrive, with our builder becoming more and more frustrated and us more and more stressed. Eventually the first part of the NHLF grant appeared in our account in early March. Having focussed on the tower, the initial project had to be re-worked. In May, scaffolding appeared both inside and outside the building, almost without warning. Costs continued to increase and no matter what we did, we struggled to find anyone at NHLF to speak to – a number of personnel changes further exacerbating matters. In the midst of this were the perpetual battles dealing with the pigeons. Suffice to say we found ourselves by the summer with contractors downing tools, the roof missing most of its tiles and scaffolding still holding the church up, the rental of which was costing £2.4k per week. With the builder threatening legal action we had no choice but to take a loan from CDBF (Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Finance) to pay him off and we remain in limbo as we wait to get on with the next stage of getting these initial works finished.

The above skates over a great deal of the back and forth of what has gone on. I would like to record my thanks to Margaret Davies, our architect, members of the team who have worked so hard to get things moving, particularly Revd Tara, Fiona Bunton, Christine Ford and Demus Lee, as well as Scott Sullivan who has come on board more recently to help support our links with NHLF. Thanks also to generous individuals who have loaned us money, as well as from the other team churches.

In the background there has been an amount of communication with Thurrock Council regarding our hall. We currently still do not have access after damaged locks were changed. Despite much chasing there has been little progress, however.

By some small mercy, our heating has not been a problem this year, which has been a relief amidst everything else.

Inevitably the scaffolding has been a serious issue for us in terms of how we use the building. We were able to put on a special service to mark the 80[th] anniversary of VE Day, and having had to change our plans for doing the same for VJ Day we took the service out to the War Memorial instead. We decided a summer fair was not possible and as the disruption has continued, we worked together to take a raffle out to the Christmas Fairs of the other Mardyke churches as we could not have a fair ourselves. We have also lost a number of occasional offices, as people very reasonably do not wish their important family moments to take place in the middle of a building site. We were not able to host the Commedia Christmas Carol as we have in previous years. We have also paused Coffee and Chat and mid-week Communion as access to church was so unpredictable. We are very much looking forward to an end to this work so we can be a space available to our community once more for fairs, weddings and other events.

At the beginning of June we said goodbye to Fr Matt, Izzy and Tabitha. Matt has returned to his home diocese of Southwark. A number of us were able to join the congregations of West Wickham for Matt’s licensing by the Bishop of Southwark. We wish Matt, Izzy & Tabitha well for the future.

**8 |** P a g e

We were aware that, at best, we would go through a period of vacancy, meaning more lay led services, including Easter Sunday Morning and the Christmas Eve Crib Service. I am grateful to those who have volunteered to lead and we continue to develop skills in this area. With a number of current vacancies and upcoming moves in the deanery, it is looking likely that there will be a reorganisation of posts and despite Mardyke Team ministering to a population of over 40,000 people, we think it unlikely that Matt will be replaced, leaving Tara to carry this load by herself.

Our online offering of weekday Morning Prayer on Facebook and weekly Night Prayer (Tuesdays) and Coffee & Chat (Sundays) have now entered their sixth year. I would like to mention in particular our dear friend Jim Smith, part of our little online group, who died in May after a fairly rapid decline in health. It was an enormous privilege to sit and pray with him when he was in hospital, something that has come as a direct result of our weekly gatherings. He is very much missed. Please be assured that week in, week out, this little group is praying for our team and our community. Others are welcome to join at any time.

Some final thoughts as I sign off – we are small in number and without additional input it is almost impossible to do any more than try to keep the lights on, the doors open and a basic Sunday service running. It is certainly not possible for Tara to do any more than she is already. It is really no good for those higher up the chain to wait for the wheels to fall off the wagon and then come and beat us with a stick for that happening. In reality, there might come a time when hard decisions have to be made about what church will look like in this time and place.

As ever, there are many people to thank – Revd Tara, whose patience for stupid questions is unending, clergy who have come in to cover, especially Fr David and Revd Wendy, Glynis and my army of deputy wardens: Fiona and Pam, Christine and Katie and David, and each person who has pitched in in whatever way. We continue to pray for God’s leading as we embark on the next chapter in the life of St Nick’s.

## **St Stephen’s**

The church is in a good state of general repair, except for some ongoing minor issues, such as the occasional blocking up of the child’s toilet. There have been a couple of call-outs to get it back into use.

There were two inspections carried out by the plumber who recommended that we consider making some changes to the discharge points. This will be considered in 2026. Black mould was discovered in the toilet and office in the annex. We have commenced work to eliminate the mould but unfortunately, our attempts so far have not succeeded. However we will continue to find ways to eradicate the problem. The decor within the main building is due for some minor repairs and repainting.

Inspection of the kitchen suggests that there is a water incursion from an unknown source which needs to be remedied and investigative work carried out to the sub-floor and

**9 |** P a g e

outside wall and water pipe systems. This work could only be undertaken during the summer school holidays due to the continuing weekday occupation of the facilities by Riverview Charitable Trust. The heating system is in good shape and we will have a look at the ventilation system in the building in 2026.

Apart from the issues and challenges above, the building is functioning very well and is meeting the needs of the church, Riverview Charitable Trust and the community as a whole.

## **The Grounds and car Park**

In general terms, the grounds are in good shape, thanks in part to the support of Thurrock Community Payback Team who are on site every other week and the vigilance of Zyle. We filled in a number of deep potholes on the driveway and recharged and levelled the car park. Unfortunately, the car park is usually muddy in the wet periods. It is hoped that we will be able to sort it out by recharging and perhaps laying down robust ground retaining plastic mesh and gravel aggregate and give the car park a defined area. The community continue to utilize some space on the north side by cultivating a small kitchen garden. This has proved to be very useful for health and wellbeing to the gardener and a good example of the church outreach to the local and surrounding community. Notice board and banners are features at the front between the gates and sign posting activities within the facility.

## **Boundaries and outside Structures**

Our boundaries are maintained to a good standard and so are those of our neighbours. The shipping containers are functioning well but may need a facelift in 2026.

## **Church Services**

Services are at St Stephen’s every week except for the weeks when there are team-services in another church in the team. Zyle leads Morning Prayer every other week and Tara alternates with a Eucharist. The services are marked by the welcoming number of families with young people.

## **Fundraising**

St Stephen’s continues to uphold its tradition of taking its turn to put on a well-supported Christmas Fayre in December, raising much needed funds for Aveley and Purfleet District Church Council. Community and family letting also forms a vital role in raising church funds.

## **Finances** :

See the general funds in St Michael’s Financial Report.

## **Outreach and social events**

St Stephen’s continue to encourage community participation inside the church and within the wider community. Riverview Charitable Trust and the church work in partnership through the use of the building and facilities to reach as many people as is possible. We support the Trust in whichever way we can and make possible the space to interact with everyone, leaving no one outside. St Stephen’s will put on the annual Christmas Fayre again in December 2026 also the lighting of the Christmas tree with carols and refreshment. We are always looking for new ways to engage with the community. However, peoplepower is vital in taking on new challenges.

**10 |** P a g e

## **Appreciation and thank you:**

We appreciate the dedication of Zyle and his family in the sterling service given by them in the spirit of Christian fellowship, worship and self-sacrifice. The church is so much richer for having the congregation at St Stephen’s.

For Tara who goes the extra mile by extending her ministry to include the much needed Foodbank in the church every Friday. Whatever the weather she is always there to serve those in need.

There is of course, the spiritual support and service freely given out of love and devotion. Thank you to everyone including our supportive builder, plumber and electrician.

## **Future Events for 2026:**

Watch out for the notices

## **Summary**

We are thankful for God’s blessings, mercy and guidance throughout a busy year. We managed to achieve most of the things we set out to do and are still working on the others through faith and prayers. We are blessed with love and support from so many people of good will. ## **PCC SECRETARY’S REPORT FOR THE MARDYKE TEAM MINISTRY 2026**

The PCC consists of the Clergy, Readers, Churchwardens, Deanery Synod Representatives and Lay representatives from each of the four Team churches. Officers to the PCC are elected annually and for 2025/2026 have been: Lay Chair-Linda Buckingham, Secretary- Sue Stamp, Treasurers-All Saints- Linda Buckingham, Saint Nicholas- Christine Ford, Saint Michael’s and Saint Stephen’s- Demus Lee.

The Team Safeguarding Officers are Christine Langan for All Saints and Saint Nicholas and Helen Anthony for Saint Michael’s and Saint Stephens. The PCC adopted the National Safeguarding and Diocesan Policy and there are relevant folders in each church which are amended by our officers as new information and updates arrive from the Diocese.

The following Safeguarding Policies were adopted in 2025: 1. Safer Environment and Activities, 2. Promoting a Safer Church and 3. Code of Safer Working Practice. A further policy on the use of Social Media Sites is to follow and will be written by Revd. Tara and Katia. Once again the PCC were reminded that any safeguarding concerns/allegations must be reported within 24 hours and any disclosures should be recorded as soon as possible.

**11 |** P a g e

Only what is actually disclosed should be recorded without the use of leading questions. Members should all complete the Foundation Safeguarding Level which is available through the Diocesan website.

In May 2025, Father Matt Drummond left the Mardyke Team. He was given a good send off and members from the Team attended his inauguration. However, the likelihood of him being replaced is very low. When Father Peter retired, no replacement was forthcoming. Reverend Tara Frankland had had the foresight to ensure that the Team could function with one priest. It is not ideal as that one priest is dealing with the needs of 52,000 people! But it does mean that Eucharistic services occur fortnightly. Problems occur when there is a major festival as Tara cannot be expected to take four services! It would be necessary to either join up or alter service times to allow this. The pool of priests available for cover is getting smaller. Add to that, the Deanery is going to be re-organised.

A meeting with Reverend Sue Lucas, Archdeacon of Southend and Adam, Bishop of Bradwell, was held at Saint Margaret’s Stanford-le -Hope in

January. Its purpose was to explain the difficulties facing the Diocese and the Deanery regarding recruitment and retention and to consult on how we in the Deanery would like to see the re-organisation. It was emphasised that there was no hidden plan already in place. It means that the Deanery will have only eight full time priests. The problem is manifold. A number of priests are due to retire imminently. The number of candidates coming forward for Ordination has fallen and lastly financial pressures are not helping. The consultation is endeavouring to make the whole process as easy and as painless as possible for all concerned, while still maintaining our presence for the community in which we serve.

Much of the PCC business this year has concerned the repair of Saint Nicholas, the Saint Michael’s old hall site and Saint Stephen’s re-development.

In September an Extraordinary meeting of the PCC was held, chaired by the Archdeacon of Southend. It was a sobering meeting concerning the repairs to Saint Nicholas.

The project had appeared to be going as planned but then there was a problem with unexpected emergency work needed on the tower to prevent its collapse, followed by a problem with funding.

The Archdeacon was very clear that part of the problem had stemmed from having no Project Manager in place. A lesson for us all. The builder was threatening legal action if the outstanding bill for work completed was not paid.

The Archdeacon laid out the way forward. Firstly, a report to the Charity Commission of a serious incident. Then a timeline of building work completed and payments made. Copies to be sent to the Heritage Lottery Fund and to the Archdeacon. Tara, Katia and Dee worked on this while Fiona Bunton in the meantime liaised with the HLF to ascertain what they needed to take the process forward. The Archdeacon advised that an application for a £150,000 loan should be made to the Diocesan Board of Finance.

Loans were sought in the meantime to settle the builder’s bill. Our thanks to everyone for contributing to this and to the anonymous donor.

Thanks too to Revd. Tara, Demus Lee, Katia D’Arcy Cumber and Fiona Bunton who have been diligently seeking an end to this on behalf of the PCC.

A loan from the Diocese of £150,000 was received. A grant from HLF for £249,858 has now also been received. This will enable loans to be paid back rapidly and for Phase 1 of the works to be completed, with the appointment of a Project Manager a priority!

**12 |** P a g e

At Saint Michael’s the plans for a new hall on Saint Michael’s site have been contested by Thurrock Council who have not looked at the correct information. Dee will be following up on this. The sale of the land from the old hall site in Mill Lane has not yet taken place despite this process starting in 2010/2011.Dee has been pushing the project forward. The land has now been surveyed and a draft report sent to the solicitors involved. As this is a Joint Venture, they will need to agree the draft. The land has been valued at £656,000. Once the plans are agreed by Thurrock Council, then a faculty can be applied for from the Diocese who are supporting the plans.

The Memorial Garden is well on the way. Dee is waiting for a response from the Diocese regarding the installation of a Celtic cross in the Garden.

Saint Stephen’s development plan is on hold at present while the aforementioned projects are completed.

It has been an incredibly busy and frustrating year but there is now a light at the end of the tunnel and we thank God for guiding us through this difficult time.

Sue Stamp- Secretary to the PCC .

## **SAINT MICHAEL’S AND SAINT STEPHEN’S DCC SECRETARY’S REPORT 2025**

The DCC has met five times this year. There was no meeting in August. Officers were appointed as follows: Treasurer- Demus Lee, Chair- Revd. Tara Frankland and Vice chairAnne Copeland.

Helen Anthony is now the Safeguarding Officer for Saint Michael’s and Saint Stephen’s. All members of DCC must have an up-to-date DBS and should use the Diocesan on-line Safeguarding training levels one and two. A Diocesan Safeguarding dashboard is now up and running with access agreed by PCC for Clergy and Safeguarding Officers. This will enable a record to be kept. Confidential Declarations should be completed for anyone volunteering. Helen will update folders etc as new information is received from the Diocese. The DCC has adopted the Diocesan National Strategy.

Saint Stephen’s have continued to work with the Riverside Trust on the proposed development of the church/site. The DAC and Historic England are involved with the discussions. They are looking at Huf Haus which would allow them flexibility in the configuration of the building. It was felt that a visit to one such building already in use would be beneficial and that the DAC and Historic England should be included in such a visit.

It was discovered that payment for water used had not been taken for two years. This has now been rectified. There was an infestation of vermin which required pest control services. This is now under control and the Trust have been reimbursed for cleaning and some damage done to their property.

Saint Michael’s, in the meantime, are continuing to work on two major projects, one the redevelopment of the old hall site in Mill Lane and two the building of a new hall on Saint Michael’s site.

**13 |** P a g e

The DAC have approved the plans for the new hall, but Heritage England wants the building to rotate 90 degrees. Thurrock Planning Office would like the building moved to Trust land next to the church. This is held in a Family Trust and would therefore be difficult to do. They also want the two projects linked to ensure that the hall is paid for by the finances received from the Mill Lane development. The DAC are pushing for the plans to be accepted as they are. The estimated cost of the hall is £2.4 million. There would be parking for twenty cars and it is hoped that a footpath from the Hub through the Recreation ground via a gate would give easier access and also allow cars to park in the Hub. A further entrance to the church car park would be via Lennard Row.

Finances are a worry for both churches although there is a healthy balance in both the Community Account and the Business Account. Demus has suggested that donations given Sunday by Sunday would be easier to account for if they were given by direct Debit or Standing Order or by the Parish Giving Scheme.

Outreach continues in many forms. There have been tabletop sales, fairs etc. The Saturday morning drop in is now running again, but the monthly lunch club is not. Foodbank has returned from All Saints, where it has been housed since the Pandemic. The Thursday Repair Shed is working well, with visitors on a regular basis. Discussions took place regarding a possible Mother and Toddler drop in too. It would not need Ofsted Registration.

Michaelmas was a Team service followed by lunch. Our thanks to Helen for organising that. Harvest Supper was held at All Saints this year. Remembrance was commemorated in both churches.

Christmas services were well attended. The Carols and lessons were led By All Saints choir with Anne, John and Alex joining us and Robert Petherum playing the organ. Our thanks to them all. Tara worked with the local schools for their Christmas celebrations.

Sadly we lost Mo Lawson early in the New Year. Ashe was a faithful, long-term member of Saint Michael’s. We have also lost Jim Smith who attended too.

As we look forward we pray for God’s continuing blessing and guidance and we thank Revd. Tara and all who work so hard to keep our churches running. It is greatly appreciated.

## **ALL SAINTS AND SAINT NICHOLAS’ DCC SECRETARY’S REPORT 2025**

Although five meetings of the DCC were timetabled since the last APCM, one had to be cancelled due to a serious accident which completely gridlocked the surrounding roads, so that no one could get in or out of Ockendon at the time! Officers for the year were elected at the first meeting-Father Matt -Chair, Linda Buckingham-Deputy Chair and Sue Stamp Secretary.

Christine Langan remains as the Safeguarding Officer for All Saints and Saint Nicholas. She reminded us that all members of DCC must have an up-to-date DBS and that we should all use the online training from the Diocesan website at levels 1 and 2. Chris will keep a record of who has done what eventually but there were problems with the Diocesan site in the early part of the year. Now that a Safeguarding Dashboard has been made available to the Officers and Clergy, it should simplify matters. The DCC adopted the Diocesan National Safeguarding Policy.

Work on the repairs at Saint Nicholas have now begun. Grants have been received which means others will be available. The builder, who has been very patient, has now been paid for the work he has completed. Pigeons were a problem at the start and when work restarted after Christmas, another clean up took place. The falconer was brought in again. The roof has also been leaking. A site meeting took place in April. Katia D’Arcy-Cumber and Demus Lee (Saint Michael’s) are now over-seeing the work.

An anonymous donation of £10,000 was made to the repair fund and a short-term loan from Saint Michael’s was gratefully received and has since been repaid. Saint Nicholas Church Hall is still not being used. The Council, having had a complaint about the state of it, came and looked, changed the lock but have still not given a key to the church. Katia is following this up. The Council have been told that there is no money available to repair the Hall as the church building is the priority. Also, the lease is due to expire soon, so further discussions need to take place.

At All Saints, Linda Buckingham has contacted the DAC and an architect with a view to installing a toilet for the disabled and a new kitchen, in the church. The architect has drawn up plans and came and explained them, with pictures to enhance them. There was a lot of discussion and questions. Linda has reported back to him points that were raised. She has received a donation of £1000 for this project and there have been several fund-raising activities. However, we have a long way to go.

Julie Heap has been checking the facilities and costs of hiring other local Halls. Linda is intending to raise the fees for the Hall but needed some comparisons. Thanks to Julie for that.

Finances continue to be a concern at both churches. All Saints have contributed to the Parish Share and both churches have now set up standing orders to the Diocese.

Outreach has taken various forms. In September, Glynis hosted a Coffee Morning for Macmillan. All Saints held a Choral Evensong. Both events went well.

Harvest Supper was held at All Saints in October with the produce being auctioned by the bag. Leftover tins were donated to Food Bank and the money raised was sent to Christian Aid. All Soul’s service was held in All Saints and Remembrance was commemorated at Saint Nicholas, with Father Matt leading the service and silence by the War Memorial.

All Saints Patronal was celebrated with a joint service with Saint Nicholas and Saint Nicholas’ Patronal was a Team service with David Rollins, Area Dean, preaching.

A trip to Rochester Christmas Market was organised by Linda and was open to all. We had a brilliant time! A visit to the Sweeps’ Festival is being planned for early May and a trip to Faversham Hop Festival is also in the pipeline. Again, open to all.

Christmas services were well attended although numbers were slightly down at Saint Nicholas. Father Matt visited schools for their celebrations and some schools visited All Saints for theirs. There was also a performance by Comedia, of Christmas Carol, in both churches.

Henry has been leading a Bible Study group for the Team, hosted at All Saints. Saint Nicholas continue with their zoom meetings and online services. Father Matt led the Lent Course for the Team.

Craft Group in All Saints and Knit and Natter at Saint Nicholas continue to thrive, although the Craft Group were sad to lose Mo Lawson who died earlier this year.

**15 |** P a g e

We also lost Trevor Fuller, a stalwart of Foodbank at All Saints and Jim Smith who had attended both our churches.

Our usual array of Quiz nights, tabletop sales (now the 3c’s coffee, cake and chat) and Bazaars have taken place with a Team barbecue planned for June 29[th] at All Saints, with the new Archdeacon of Southend, Sue Lucas, attending.

As we look forward, we pray for God’s continuing blessing and guidance and we thank Father Matt and all who work so hard to keep our churches going. It is greatly appreciated.

## **Clergy Reports**

2025 has been a year of hello’s and goodbye’s. It has been lovely to see new faces in Church, some of which have stayed others have been for services which were meaningful for them.

Easter had its own challenges as Fr Matt broke his leg a week before, he managed to do what he was able to on crutches. My thanks go to all who contributed to the Holy Week services and who gave their forbearance for Easter Sunday as Masses were changed to enable two to happen at the same time with the same priest.

Christmas was a joyous time with many new and familiar faces coming to join us in renditions of the 12 days of Christmas involving much sitting and standing and finding crib figures to put the nativity together for the midnight Masses.

Throughout the year Schools have continued to visit the Churches for lessons, I have been going in to schools to take assemblies on a monthly basis and the Churches have hosted Christingles, Easter Bonnet parades and Christmas performance’s. The questions that are asked are fascinating and the children very much enjoy meeting the working spiders.

My thanks go to all who have made the transition to working with one Priest as smooth as it could be. The teams who take the services of the word beautifully. Those who make the Churches look beautiful with their flower arrangements, those who help with admin and Foodbanks. Thanks also go to those who have worked so hard on the work for St Nicholas, Fiona, Katia, Dee, Christine and others have pulled together documentation and made phone calls all of which will enable the work to be successfully completed.

We look forward to what 2026 holds.

## **Parish Reports**

## **All Saints Craft Group Report, March 2026.**

Craft Group continues to meet between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesdays. Although a few people don’t venture out in the cold weather, now that the warmer weather (hopefully) is here they have returned. We continue to have approximately 15 regular members and a few others who drop in as their commitments allow.

Everyone brings their own choice of craft, currently knitting seems to be the most popular, and everyone enjoys sharing their results with the rest of the group. There are various levels of expertise within the group, and one member has commented that she didn’t think she would ever be able to knit a complete article again as she struggles with her memory. With help she has successfully completed a cardigan.

**17 |** P a g e

Some of the focus currently is to produce items for the craft stall at the Summer Fair which will soon be upon us. However, if anyone has knowledge of causes that could benefit from our skills we would be willing to consider assisting.

Whilst our hands are busy it also gives us time for our, sometimes quite lively, chats! Refreshments are provided and sometimes our members bring in cakes or special biscuits to share. There is a very friendly atmosphere and when members are absent, they are contacted to make sure that they are OK. Everyone is welcome.

## **Choir report 2026**

‘Sing and make melody to the Lord with your heart’. Ephesians 5.19

The choir has had another busy year since the last APCM and has continued to lead regular Sunday worship at All Saints. Over the last Christmas period on the third and fourth Sundays in Advent, we held two Lesson and Carol services, one at All Saints and the other at St Michael’s, both of which were very well received by the congregations. We were very fortunate to be accompanied on the organ by Robert Petheram, as we would not be able to attempt some choral pieces without him. He would be very happy to support us in a sung evensong in the future to enhance our worship too.

Thank you also to members of the choir for their dedication, turning out in the dark and cold over winter, especially Gemma and Jaz who brought their babies with them so as not to miss a practice for our Christmas services. It is much appreciated.

Our choir practice is held regularly on Wednesday evenings at 7pm at All Saints and is well attended. At present the choir is busy rehearsing choral pieces and hymns for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, all of which you will have heard by the time the APCM takes place.

The choir is always open to new choristers, will encourage them to learn and sing a wide variety of choral pieces and any new members would be most welcome to come along any Wednesday evening to join us at choir practice. It would be good to have some members from all four Mardyke churches - you do not need to read music or have an exceptional voice but would be expected to be committed and be ready for a laugh during our practices!

Julie and Anne from All Saints choir.

## **Finance Report**

Total receipts on ordinary unrestricted funds were and are detailed in the financial statements.

£ 70,910.67 was spent to provide the Christian ministry from All Saints, St Michael’s, St Nicholas and St Stephen’s, including the contribution to the diocesan parish share, which largely provides the stipends and housing for the clergy. The sum that the churches in the deanery have to find is shared between the churches according to a formula that is based mainly on a head count of the congregations.

The net result for the year was a deficit of receipts over payments of. The balances carried forward of 31 December for unrestricted funds totalled £ (2,198.39).

## **Reserves policy**

It is PCC policy to maintain a balance on unrestricted funds (if possible), which equates to approximately six months’ unrestricted payments, to cover emergency situations that may arise from time to time. The balance of £ 18,210.56 on unrestricted funds at the year-end did match this target.

The balance of in the restricted funds is retained towards their designated purpose.

It is our policy to invest our funds balances with the CDBF Church of England Deposit Fund.

## **Approved by the PCC on and signed on their behalf by Revd AT Frankland (PCC chairman).**
