Clergy
We said goodbye to Reverend Peter Rabin ar￿ Richard. We wish them luck in their new
adventure and new home. Now the diocese should decide what to do wrth the rectory.
At All Saints we celebrate and thank God for Father Matt Drummond. We are ever grateful
for hi5 ministry. consistency and interest in the parish. The congregation feels they have
someone caring and praying for them and with them. We thank him for connetting with the
local schools in the parish and welcoming chtldren once again to the church.

Thank you Reverend Tara Franldand too. As a 'b055' somellmes difficult deusions have to
be made, and these aren't alY4ays co the liking of every one.
Services
l am glad that we have Y￿ekty services and people seem to have adjusted to only having
communion fortnightly. I do understsnd why we have 2 communions (due to illness and
holid3y).
We have Morning Prayer and the service of word liwry. People srayed a￿aY for a time rf 1¢
was Morning Prnyer but it does seem to have become more acceprable. We returned to
tsking communion in rwo kinds. even If it was only through dipping the Wafer in the wine.
We are now going to the point that Matt intincts the Yrdfer and places it direttly into our
hands. We are going back to have the full alt2r rdil in place $0 st will be arKxher $￿P to

so won't be able to attend. If any of you know of people from the past who may need to be
invited please let me have their detatls so that I can invite them. So finalty tharjk you all for

The graveyard: is well kw aparr from the need for Speci￿ care to remove iyy from a

contracL It is worth pointing out that we are £6,000 + VAT short of the Sum required to
lay a new foundation and rebuild the waS1. With this in mind I had a conversation with the
contractor and explained to him rhat we are £6000 + Vat short of the accepted quote and
are unlikely to rdise the amount needed in a hurry. l asked him rf it was at all possible for
him to work with what we have 2nd carry out the work to the sati5fattbon of the Architect.
He agreed to do the work at C05L He will start the work at the end of April.
Four of our rwhbours at Lennard Row banded together to renew their west boundary
fence. Whilst doing so rhey moved the fencing into church land to extend their rear garden.
One told me that the church is not using the land so he sees no reason vthy he should not
use it to allow his child a larger ￿rden. The end of tsrrace rK) I I bought their house and
inherited the problem but are happy to reinstate their boundary. but the others are reticent
and have shown scant regard to polite requests from the church to reinstate the boundary.
We are in the process of consulting c>ur solicitors on a suitable forni of words to send to all
four owner5 demanding that the fence be reinstated. otherwise court action will be taken.
Church servlces: the good news is that coming out of the pandemic we see that the
congregation is beginning to show atfendance consistrncy week on week as the numbers
grow. In spite of all that ha5 happened over the Lqst few years the church functioned well as
we see members attending church that have not done so from before the pandemic. Thanks
to Tara and Matt for their focu& sterling work and guidance throughout the year. I would like
to thank members of our congregation who showed steadfast devotion to service and those
who encouraged and supP￿[ed others to resume their participation in weekly service and

worship. Church attendance ks now holding up well although Sporadic at time& The Thursday
morning se￿[Ce could do with a boost but we hope that will happen in due course.

the vftrmer v￿ather when costs of utilities are not so hLgh. We hope that the introduction

St steph￿¥warden￿ Report toAPCM 2022- 2023
The year started well compared to the two years prior. The thurch is back up and running
fully and services are bein8 conducted without most of the restriction put in place during
the pandemic. However. it is not withour its challer)ges. Attendance is still well below
pandemic levels with an average of ten and remains a concerning matter for the church.
That said ir is a regular occurrence for u5 to haye visitors and returning members in
attendance at Sunday Services. So Y￿ continue to work to ensure the church is open and
available to worshipers when needed.
Our communSry links remaln very strong we ct)ntlnue to work closely wth Rlvervlew
(formally St Stephen's) Community Trusl Food Banl and others to enable the church
premises to be used to the benefit of the wider Purfleer community. Use of the church

As ever. we are grateful that 'she's still standing.. Again. surety this is more by prnyer and
God'5 grace than anythiTE else! Anne has worked hard to nuke a start on what needs to be

would also note that Anne's super power seems tt) be getting a response out of the DAC

The Hall remains a concern and while we are keen for it to be brought back into Use to
benefit both SN and the wider community. this remains part of our overall plans with th￿e
for the church above.
We were also made avfare of a parcel of glebe land on the border with North Ockendon
that had belonged to Sr Nicholas. Tentative (and frankly brilliant) ideas were investsgated
regarding how that land could be used. Several months in. however. it became apparent that
the land had previousty been disposed of.
Following Fr Peter & Richard's move late last year, the Vicarage remains empty and will b¢

One other concern is +￿r churchyard. The lady in the tent has not returned, however wme
of our new ne￿hbourS on the west side regularly drop their rubbish 4>ver the wall. making
for a pretty grim task of clearin8 UP.
Events
Being small in number. we are somewhat limlted by what we can offer as events. Thanks to
the wider support of those in the community we held successful Summer and Christmas
Fairs. a5 well as events tc> mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and also her death. We have
tried to gather as a fellow￿hIP as well for a couple of ￿cial evenings. We vrfere delighted to
welcome Aveley & Newham Band back for a concert at Remembrance as well as a local
theatre group who packed the church our in the run up to Christmas. Few of these things
are big money spinners, but we are keen to have the church ¢)pen as much a5 P055ible and
to be seen as an important part of our local community. Wlth a hefcy increase in parish
share we will need to think about bwr fundraising events over the next few rnonths.
Worship
Our online provision for the team continued, with Morning Prayer a￿ailable across most
of our Facebook pages by on weekdays as Y4ell as ￿therIng for Night Prnyer on
Tuesdays and Evening Pr3yer on Fridays on Zix>m. This continues to be an important part
of our fellowship. Our pattern of two Eucharistic Servi￿ and two non-EucharistiC

to do this has taken pla￿. With our live. in-person organisc EItZ2beth. off to universiry we

Since the last APCM our churche5 have had to adapt to a new pattern of worship. At firs(

general feeling that removing the Eucharist would see congregations dwindle on those

Our churches have more social activitse5 this year a5 covid restrirtions become a thing

badges V￿re given to everyone. Our thanks to fhvid and Shirley fi)r OTganising the catering
and also to All Saints grdener, An&e. who donated some cupcake5 . We abo held a Family

from Dilkes and Beacon Hill Schools. It vrds well attended and a lot of fun with 3 display by
the jujirsu group and team games after. Although it vlas never intended ro make lots of
money. we did in fact rdi5e some funds too.
Coffee Mornings for Macmillan Nurses were held at Saint Nichola5 and All Sairts and Saint
Michael's re-instated their Michaelmas lunth. It was in September that we learnt of the

The Ukraine War has caused many problems, including surging price5 for energy bills for
our communities and our churches. But by far the greatest impact has been on the
Ukrainian people themselves. Saint Stephen's and All Sainrs were used as hubs to host

Blankets, made by All Saints Craft Group. plus some others that had been donated. were

completing the demands from the last Quinquennial and %Yditing for the results of the next

of fewer priests if it does not happen.
On a sadder n¢xe. have seen long orm members of our congregations die. At All Salnr5

Team Vicarfs Repo￿ 2022
As I wrlts this the snow is falling ourside during what is the coldest March since 2010.
Despite the chilliness outside l am pleased to say that the life of our two Churches outside
the M25 remain both warm in welcome and faith.
If 2021 vR5 a year of arrNal and settlement for me in a new role, then 2022 has been a year
of putting vision into attion. l am pleased to note that both All Saints and St Nicholas's has
seen growth in terms of numbers and diversiry, with new people joining us for worship: it
shows u5 that whilst we may only be small in size and in a community chilly towards the
faith, that we can offer a welcome co others into our fellowship. With this in mind, we also
saw members of our congregation5 being Confirmed by Bishop John in October.
In terms of worship, we have settled inco a pattern of bi-weekly M35s in each Churches,
with Morning Prayer or Prnyer & Praise taking the other Sunday slots. Prayer & Prdise has
allowed us to expand our repertoire of worship, moving away from a hymn-reading-sermon
sandwich to a service where there is grearer scope for different attivities. At St Nicholas's
this ha5 included dramatic readings of the Gospel, and at both Churches the chance
explore vision for the future. This year at St Nicholas's I have introduced the marking of
Plough Sunday as a chance to remind OU￿e[We$ that we a￿ a rural community surrounded
by field5, and thus called to prdy for the welfare not just of our built environment abut also
of our agricultural one. This is particularly rel￿nt for this Church as it sits on the very
edge of farmland.
One of my visions has been that our churches should not just be Sunday venues, but one5
available for use by the wider community. With this in mind we have seen both St
Nicholas's and All Saints hosting Community Forum meetings, and the former hosting arts
events (a brns5 band concer( and a production of A Christmas Carol by a local thearre
cornpany - All Saints have asked that they also be considered as a hosting venue for future
art$ evenrs).
Engagement with local schools continue5 to be a key feature of my worK with my visiting all
the local primary schools (except the Roman Catholic one), 2nd their visiting the Church
either for talks, or for services, I have also been into the schools to lead assemblies on
Harvest and other festivals. Each school visit comes with its own challenges, as each school
though part of the same Academy Federydtion come5 Wtth different expettations and
methods of crowd control! Finally, I visited Dilkes Academy for a 'grill the Vicar, class, with
some very interesting and thoughtful questions being asked.
Whilst this has been a very successful year there have also been times of sadness,
particularly with the death of Rob Stamp a loving and frdithful member of our communiry
now in the presence of the Lord. As the hymn purs it 'We voinly Struggle. he (sic) in glory
shinesl. So may he, with all the Saints in glory, hold us in continuous prayer before the
throne of Gra￿.
In closing l am grateful to all who have made this year at All Saints and St Nicholas's a
succes5. To those Nehemia5 and Ezr25 who have helped maintain and rebuild parts of our
Church, to those Judges and Prophets who kept the Church running through thick and thin,
and those Marys. Martha and Lazarus's who have supported the life of the churche5 too
