SECRETARY'S REPORT FOR THE MARDYKE TEAM MINISTRY 2022
The PCC consists of the Clergy, Readers. Churchwardens. lay representstives from each church and
Deanory Synod representstives. As the APCM was not held unril May 23 2021. the PCC has met only
four tlmes. twice by zoom. ontr In person and once in a comb"nation set up.
Father Peter retired in July 2021 so we are now Se￿ed by two priests for our four churches. Reverend
Tara Fr2nkl2nd has responsibllity for Saint Michael'5 Aveley and Saint Stephen's Purfeet and Father Matt
Drummond has responsibiliry for Al Saints Belhus Park and Saint Nicholas South Ockendon. This was
formalized at the Candlemas SeThI￿ on the 30 January 2021
Having only LWO prlesrs to serve four churches h25 necessttated changes co our serytces. At P￿sent thls
has meant two out of four churches has a Eucharistic Servi￿ while the other two have Morning Prdyer
from the Book of Common Prayer or from Common Worship. This is then reversed. All Salnts and Salnt
Stephen's have a Eucharistic service on the ume Sunday as do Saini Michael's and Saini Nichola5. This
system has tried to be robust enough co cover clergy illness and holidays etc Morning Prnyer can be led by
lay people rf a priest is unavailable. It is anllcipared that these arrangements will sray in Pla￿ for the
foreseeable future. However, each churdi will k able to develop Morning Pr7yer services to suit their
individual situacions. Discussions regarding service format5 will be held in February with the relevant
DCC'S. We would like to sincerely thank our clersy. li￿nsed Minis￿r5 and lay people who lead our
worship.

save for the works requlred and other things will need to be thought about from the to do list from the

It Is hard to remember what things were like before Covid. On wrifjng this time last year, we were just
over a year into these stran8e times and thinking thin8s must get lEt￿r s¢)on, yet here we are anorher
year on only tentstively starting to regain even footing. Of course this has wented many challenges for
us as a church locally and further afield. arKI will continue play a part in directing our onward travel for the
foreseeable future. Some refiethon¥.
As ever, the startsng point has to be yving thanks that 'she's stlll standing.. although much Ilke the
rldiculously shallow foundations of Salisbury Cathedral it feels very much like this is mostly thanks ro

Our qulnquennlal took FA3￿ in 2021 and ￿a5 a ￿rn1nder of the huge amounc there is to do to look after
one so ancient. We have been grdteful for a mild V*rynw as the archicect suggested that snow and a
subsequent frost would LE the end for the roof. Anne Pool has W0￿ed on a statement of signfficance and
along with Dee's asslstance and Advice we are finally starting to look at how to address the serious issues
that simply can no longer be put off. We have had other challenges. such as elettric31 problems and
remperarnental tCJiler& but have managed to move fOr￿1rd on rhese so we now seem to be In a slightly
better sta*.
We have made little prc%ress with the hall. however now have a copy of the lea* and have had some
contact with l¢xal councillors about how to progress this. We are boking to form a working parry to get
thls moving. It should be noTrd that the currert lease only has a few years th to run. so this needs to be
taken Into conslderadon.
After offering a varlety of 35siStance to our 'l¢)dger vo took the dedsion. advisad by Tara to start to
secure the p)rch area of the church. meaning that enrry would tt trespas& And our lodger now seem5 to
have moved on.
In term5 of getting on wlth the things of the fabric of the churth that we could undertake ourselves, we are
Ilmlted by a lack of b)dies. We are very grateful to those who grve so much of thelr tlme and effort but the
Soad can EEcome onerous with so few to carry 1¢
There ha5 been little opportunity for any major eyents during 2021. We conunued with our monthly
online quiz night& which were a great social tlm¢ but also kept a lirtle fijndraising coming in. We were
very pleased to be able to run our Chriscmas Fair which, while scaled down from previous years. reminded
people that we are still here and also put 2 little more money in the PJL meaning we We￿ able to close
the year with some payment toward5 our Parish sha￿ After much discussion abouc salety in gathering, we
also zook some of our Cdrol singing outdoors and felt that this would ix a gwd way forward in order to
engage L￿tter wrth the community. Many thanks to th0￿ who have supported our efforts over the last

2021 has been another complicated year with lockdowns and resEricEions requirin8 some last mlnute
changes to plans.
Eastrr wa5 another malnly online PJPErience and my thanks go to all those who wllllngly changes plans and
adapted liruw In order to make it as aC￿sSible as possible. This year at Christmas we managed to do all
servlces Sn person. although some Sa5t minute adaption was needed to enable safe attendan￿ as infection
rates stsrted to rise a￿1n.
The past r*YO years have really shown the creativity and adapttmlty within the Team. Thank you to all
who have organlsed services and fet￿ who have pl2>Ed music and arrnnzed flower& The cleaners and
organisers. those who have ￿lephoned and written during kxkdowns. who have livestreamed and zoomed
and found many other v4ay5 of worshipping and caring for each other.
This year we also commemorat¥J ￿ Duke of Edinburg followirsg his death.
The Team bade a fond farewell to PeTrr on his rettrement and exwe5sed our grntrful thanks for his many
years of mini5(ry within the Team and in the Pdrish of South Ockendon & Belhus Par
As Peter is not going to replaced rhe Team has had t£• rethink how ministry can be done with two
Stipendiary Priests and the help of AkeK Glynis and Henry. The decision was made to continue with the
two Districts. consequendy the focus of M2tts ministry chang8J to Belhus Park and South Ockendon and
my ministry focus moved to include St Michaels and St Stephens. We also h3d to k)ok at service patterns
Page | 12

to enable us to have a regular Pa￿rn which allowed for holidays and sickness. The stipendiary cler8y are
allowed Six Sundays a year of holiday and are occasionally asked to assisc in cover for other Parishes. In
order to make this possible we needed to find a pattern which allowed us to hold Sunday setyices with
only one Priest available and without the need to cancel any service5 or change their nature. We
therefore have agreed a pattern of fortnightly Eucharists and a non*uch2risric service on the other
Sundays. This pa￿rn means that there will always be a Eucharist in each Districc on a Sursday and there
will always be a Eucharist at 9.45am 3nd I1.15am to enable those who wish to, to rravel to another
Church to receive Communion if their usual Church is having a non-eucharistic service that Sunday. This
decision has not been taken Ilghtly and l am only too well aware that many of you are disappointed that a
weekly eucharist will not be availible in your usual Church but l am afraid thar this is the m05t sensible
solution which avoids the need to cancel eucharists on a regular basi5. We have also agreed thar there will
always be a Eucharisi for festival Sundays and tha¢ Patronal Festivals Mll alwdys have J Eucharist whilst we
still have Ewo stipendiary priests In the Parish, in addition on a fifth Sunday there will be a eucharist in one
of the Churches in the Te2m and no service in the other rhree. Over the next few months the non-
eucharistic sernices will evolve withln each Church commuiiiry to reflecc the cong￿81[1011 and the
churchmanship of the area. If you would like to be involved in the planning for non-eucharisilc services
please do Speak with your Churthwardens and Clergy.
I know that all of this wlll take some gettlng used to and I do thank you for your patlence and wisdom as
we haye been maklng these decisions. I do appreciate your willingness 10 have a new pattern of *Thlces
and the prayerful way In which you have approached the issue5.
We are now back to a reasonably normal way of working alchough we are sti15 keeping an eye on Infettion
rates and are sull keeplng some of the safery measures In place. It ha5 been a real learning curve for all of
us and I wlll be forevor grateful for the Pll tience and good humour that all of you have shown and for the
assistance of M2K the Churchwardens. Alex. Henry and Glynis in all the changes and uncertaintles. l am
sure that we will all emerge stronger and having learnt a lot about ourselves 2nd our faith.
In 2022 we look forward to continuing to emerge from the Pandemlc and to rhe Platinum Jubilee for the
Queen. As we look forward we trust God that he will continue to be faithful and rhat we wlll continue to
grow.

The last years have been ones of extrem￿ moving frofft lockdown Into 'new nomal, (whatever
"normal" might LE), and le2rning to adapL Similarly when l arriv&d in the Team in 20191 did nor expect to
be moving post so soon, even rf it has beo) an internal, in-Team transfer.
Sintt Candlemas I have been formalty serving as Team VIc3r with responsikn'liry for the Northern half of
our Te3rn {Belhus Park and South Ockendon). though I have been coverSng there since before then. This
has meant a change in trmpo for m& and a Chan￿ to exercise a more Incarnauonal approach to ministry,
that is being em￿dded in the communities I serve through living in midst and sharing their common
life.
Page | 14

The move has ￿s0 meant learning to lead in a new way, and to learn and understand the needs of the
communiues and churches I serve. This has initialty meant listening, praying and thinking, but 15 now moving
into vision sharing and implementation. One of my initial visions is for the Church to be truly incamacional,
that is iii the midst of the people. and serwng the people. and for us truly 'io be one, as Jesus prays co the
Father, with xll the complexities that entiils.
But the Priest doe5 not mlnister on hls own. but rather shares in the ministry of the whole church
communiry. With this in mind l am tru5y grdteful to those who've kept All Saints and St Nicholas'5 running
these pst few year5. My prayer is that we may work more closely together to enable our churches to
fulfill their call to worship 2nd to serve.

ALL SAINTSty CHOIR REPORT 2022
After completing a rlsk assessment for covid 19, we re-startsd choir practice in sep￿mber of 2021 with
really rusry voice5 and detrrmination to move forward as resErlctlons were eased and Infection ratrs fell.
Not all member5 have returned at prosent but most have. We started with the Intention of takin8 part in
the Chelmsford cholr festlval and accended a prattice at Saint Edward The Confessor In Romford. Our
thanks go to Robert Petherum who had been supporting our learning of parts etc for thi5. Although che
music was once again not what we could use in our own setting. it was lovely co sing cogether wlth others.
There were no masks etc there, which was a Ilttle SL>rprising! Unfortunately, due to illness (nor covld!)
other commitments and gonernl chaos, we were unable to make the day. So our full attention turned to
Christmas.
It was still vnclear wh3t form our Christmas servlees would take, bue it wa5 declded that we would go
ahead with learning items and if all else failed on the in- person Ilne we could live stream from rhe church,
soclally dIstan￿d and on our own. Carols by Cxndlelighr enabled us to have a specific alm. Robert again
volunteered to play the organ and a few extra members were added co our choii", from Salnt Mary
Magdalen4 North Ockendon and one member who worship5 ai a London church. The service did go
ahead but by then Omicron, a variauon of covid 19 was Trmpaglng. The Wvdther was awful and with social
dlscancing maintalned and doors kept open for ventilation etc it was poorty attended and freezing cold!11!!
However, we hope that we lifted peoples splrits at another rime of great uncerrainty.
We also managed to go out into the communiry ro carol sing. We enjoyed an hour of carol singin8 at
Leatherland Lodge, which was a great privilege. Henry played vlolln for us and that helped us to stay in
tune. We sang outside in the quadrangle and the resideijts were able to see and hear us and to join in.
Father Matt also joined us for this. Our thanks ro Leatherland Lodge for the invite and for the tea and
mince pies at the end !
We had antlcipated being able to have our Midnighr Mass with a full number of carols etc. As it happened,
Father Matt ended up self-i501aciiig as poor Tabltha had *sted positive. So Tard ran round four churches
delivering a Christmas Mas5 to us all. We kept to our usuas Pat￿rn of one carol at the start and one to
fSnish.
As we returned in the New Year, we have *un to reIn￿Oduce our servSce music. We have gone back to
the David Thome Setting, which is simpler for everyonÉ to pick up the melody. We are a150 singing th
hymns. It is hoped thai by Lent IEaster we will be in a position to sing the whole seNice again. We are
looking forward to being able fully to 'Make ajoyful Noise unto the Lord our God,, once again!

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of The Parochial Church Council of The Ecclesiastical Parish of the Mardyke Team Ministry.**

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2021 which are set out on pages 20 to 44.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
