## **Achievements and Performance**

||SORP reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|A wellbeing choir for adults with lived
experience of mental ill health
continued its rehearsals in Harrogate.
The choir has benefitted members
through the physical and psychological
benefits that singing provides and as an
opportunity to socialise.
A sub-group from the wellbeing choir
took part in a song-writing project,
collaborating together to write their own
group song then perform and record it
in a professional studio. This creative
and expressive experience was
immensely empowering to
beneficiaries, and the production of
their own song to share with friends and
family extremely rewarding.
The choir went on to perform this and
other songs in a joint concert with other
wellbeing choirs in York. For many, this
was the first time that they had
performed in public, so provided a real
boost in confidence and sense of
achievement.
The charity has funded one-to-one
instrumental tuition for 4 adults with
mental health issues in 2022/23. The
regular tuition has provided individuals
with routine and purpose, students|

often reporting that it is the one thing they look forward to in the week. Singers accessing tuition were able to participate in a Singing Showcase, achieving their own goals in performing to an audience. The role of co-conductor in an existing choir for adults using mental health services was funded by Emerging Voices for part of 2022. The Assistant Director has lived experience of mental ill health and was previously a member of the choir. The role has enabled this person to progress taking on leadership of the choir when the choir Director has been away.

Both the song-writing project and Harrogate Wellbeing Choir concert Achievements against Para 1.41 involved several day trips for a group of objectives set beneficiaries to York, where they made and cemented close friendships. Both experiences took place in modern and socially-valued spaces (a university, a recording studio, a Creative Centre, etc.), working towards our aims of socially integrating those who are often excluded from parts of society. Tuition and performance opportunities enabled adults with lived-experience of mental ill-health to progress as singers and instrumentalists, crucially changing the perception of these individuals from ‘service users’ to musicians and artists and thus aiding their social integration. Feedback from participants is overwhelmingly positive as to the effects of the charity’s activities on their general wellbeing, thus meeting our objective of relieving the needs of our beneficiaries. ## **Financial Review**

|Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period|Para 1.21|During this financial year the charity
unfortunately encountered a situation
that involved legal fees (£2260), extra
admin hours and other related costs,
resulting in us ending the year in deficit
(of £2389) and overdrawn (by £802) for
the first time in our history. This
situation has now been completely
resolved and there are no further costs.
The trustees were and remain
determined to increase funds, primarily
by applying for funding from a broad
range of organisations and also through
fundraising, in order to fund future
activities and build unrestricted
reserves. It should be noted that the
projects and finances of the charity
hitherto and since have functioned well
and been fully solvent, but for this
exceptional incident. We thus have no
concerns about the charity continuing
as a going concern.|

|Amount of reserves held|Para 1.22|0|
|Reasons for holding zero
reserves|Para 1.22|Although the charity does not currently
hold reserves, it is our aim to obtain and
build reserves in the future to the
approximate amount of six months
running costs, in order to absorb
unexpected expenditure or periods of
reduced income.|
|Details of fund materially in
deficit|Para 1.24|See above.|

|A description of the principal
risks facing the charity|Para 1.46|Due to the issues referred to above, the
unrestricted funds and reserves of the
charity were severely depleted.
Therefore a focus on fundraising/
applying for grants that provided
unrestricted funding was a priority until
the charity had recovered its financial
stability. The charity still continues to
focus on building reserves and
diversifying funding streams to mitigate
financial risk when any given grant term
comes to an end.|
