ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024

ONGOING ACTIVITES OVER THE PERIOD:

FUNERAL PROJECT: Providing bereavement support, and access to Hindu funeral services and last rites for Hindus as a well-being support project to assist family members who have recently lost a friend or family member. This is an established project run in conjunction with a local funeral company.

WOMENS GROUP (MAHILA SHAKTI): A dedicated project aimed at promoting female empowerment. This group also serves as a network tool for other women with an aim to tackle issues of loneliness within this particular demographic. During the period, their greatest success was collecting over 500kg of clothing and sending it to the underprivileged in India.

ROYAL BOLTON HOSPITAL TEMPLE / PRAYER ROOM: Promotion of a wellbeing space for patients and professionals to use for meditation and mindfulness activities which further strengthened the ongoing Hindu and Dharmic Chaplaincy outreach at the hospital.

COLLABORATION ACROSS VARIOUS SUPPORT GROUPS:

Collaboration work and interfaith networking across all faith groups in the borough through education and partnership at joint events.

SCHOOLS VISTS: Coordinating schools visits into local Temples and arranging for speakers to attend schools locally.

MAJOR EVENTS HOSTED IN THE PERIOD:

SPORTS MELA: A regional multi-sport tournament and cultural festival, combining both western and eastern competitive games. This is the only festival of its kind in the country which attracted over 900 attendees over 2 days from across the northwest and midlands. Games include multiple individual and team-based sports.

SHRAD BHAJANS: A musical remembrance concert to commemorate those who are no longer with us. A collaborative community event to celebrate the lives of loved ones, through music and celebration.

NAVRATRI: A collaborative event which is delivered through the efforts of four local not for profit groups which is to celebrate the festival of Navratri, the female energy in Indian culture. The event takes place over 9 nights bringing together members of the public to enjoy music and to celebrate the festivity through dance and mindfulness.

HOLI: A Hindu festival which celebrates spring and various events through colour and communal joy in an outdoor setting. The event was attended by over 400 people from across the local area with attendees from Bolton, Chorley, Salford and Bury.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES:

DANCE CLASSES : Regularly hosting classes to teach children and adults Bollywood dance and classical Indian dance forms and thereby promoting the performing arts within the community. These provided avenues for participants to grow in confidence using dance as a means of expression whilst also giving attendees the option to develop in their own artistic skills. Over 20 participants were attending classes on average per week.

BHF RADIO: Operating and running an Indian internet radio station that plays music and has language-based programs in over 15 Indian languages and English. Over the past year we have made an application to register the radio station as a local DAB Radio channel within the Bolton/Bury region of Greater Manchester, as well as continuing to run the radio station as an internet radio station.

YOGA CLASSES: Yoga classes were run for up to 20 participants which promoted wellbeing, stress and pain control.

WEEKLY RECREATION AND SPORTS: A small group of 5 participants gather weekly to play table tennis as part of a Sunday Sports Club.
