Report of the trustees for the year ending 5 April 2022

The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the statement of financial activity for the charity for the year ending 5 April 2022.

Charitable Objectives

Isikoza is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, established to:

OBJECTIVES AND AIMS

Isikoza is committed to enabling people from diverse backgrounds access to ‘inspiring and practical’ educational training in the fields of jazz and popular music.

The charity aims to achieve this by:

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

In the financial period April 2021 to April 2022 we have:

PROJECTS:

Programmed Jazz Guitar Performance :

We were honoured to secure the services of a professional jazz guitarist, who visited us in Stoke, with an ensemble of musicians to perform during Black History Month. The concert was a resounding success. Our organisation would like to develop the idea; of having professional musicians’ whose specialism is Jazz Standards, and Popular Music, perform in our city. We believe these concerts, and performances, will raise the awareness of our organisation, to a wider demographic in Stoke on Trent and, the potential to programme music workshops dedicated to the art and practice of Jazz.

Developed Potential Partnerships for Musical Performances:

Our Chairman has conducted several meetings across the Six Towns of Stoke on Trent; to develop potential partnerships with organisations which programme musical activities, and whose aims are charitable for the good of the general public. These meetings were initially fruitful, however sadly due to the financial constraints and difficulties of the present climate, we were unable to arrive at a format and conclusive partnership with said organisations.

Mentored Semi-Professional Musician on Jazz Improvisation:

Our chair provided mentorship sessions, to a semi professional musician, on approaches to Jazz Improvisation. Rather than limiting the approach to a specific instrument, the methodology utilised was to see how the ‘musical elements’ were transferrable to all instruments. This method allowed the musician in question, to grasp the essentials and, implement the information in a reduced amount of time. By simplifying the amount of theory; and showing concrete musical examples in practice, the mentoring was deemed a success.

Viewed Several Premises:

There are empty premises in Stoke on Trent, that the council and Government are keen to see occupied. We have received notification from the council, on several occasions for discussions and viewings about empty buildings which may assist us in our objectives.

We are still in discussions at present.

FUTURE

All of the above projects were again delivered with the charity receiving no financial remuneration. To address this pressing matter we are investigating several options and of these the most appealing is to formulate successful partnership(s) with organisations that share similar interests and are more established.

Our charity is confident that we will secure partnerships with the Council, and other Arts Organisations, operating in and around Stoke on Trent. This firm belief is based on the fact that the city has received large amounts of levelling up funds for the purpose of regeneration.
