## A WELCOME FROM OUR CHAIR 

**WOW, what a year it’s been for I4YPC!** 2023-2024 has seen the charity go from strength to strength and deliver its most ambitious project to date, the ‘Innit ’23 programme’. 

This is my second year as the Chair of the amazing I4YPC and I couldn’t be more proud of the team on the ground who have worked relentlessly to deliver the charitable aims through an array of exciting projects and our new Creative Hub at Quayside, MediaCity. 

on the cusp of school exclusion, in alternative provision or already in the Criminal Justice System, were enjoying and living in the moment.  They entered the auditorium with a sense of uncertainty and antipathy for Musical Theatre and once they had met the relatable characters and held a mirror up to their own lives and behaviours, they relaxed and left their ‘real lives’ outside.  This for me, is the power, purpose and phenomenon of live theatre and the Arts as a collective. 

‘Innit ‘23’ saw over 1200 young people from across Salford attend The Lowry theatre for free, and I was humbled by their reactions to the production.  I was able to sit in the audience for several of the matinee and evening performances and witnessed young people and adults alike, all standing for the reprisal of ‘Universal Credit’ at the end of the show, clapping, dancing and singing. 

As we enter 2024-2025, we celebrate our 5th year as a charity and continue to flower as an organisation, develop the Innit Creative Hub, creating a safe space for, and reaching as many young people as possible.

## THE ‘MAIN EVENT’ 

THE ‘INNIT ‘23’ PROJECT had been three years in development and culminated in September 2023, with a two week run of the musical ‘Innit’ at The Lowry theatre, Salford. 

Innit’ is I4YPC’s musical, written by CEO and Founder, Micky Dacks when he was serving a 9-month prison sentence.  The plot follows a young man from Salford who tries so hard to stay on the straight and narrow, but in a moment of desperation, makes one wrong decision which has terrible consequences. 

## THE HEADLINE FIGURES 


**Over 1200 young people from across Salford attended at The Lowry theatre, given free tickets to see ‘Innit’ and provided with free transport and a free production programme.**

## THE ‘INNIT 23 PROJECT’ 


**Educational resources were provided to teachers….all for FREE, with over 15 schools teaching curriculum-focused classes in Drama, Music and Performing Arts.** 

- **Over 500 young people auditioned for ‘Innit’ across a 12-month period.** 


- **9 young people were cast in main roles and were provided with their first, professional experience of working in live theatre** 



- **5 young people were employed in the creative team, in roles such as set designer, lighting designer and make-up artist.** 

## THE PROCESS 

Open auditions ran over a 12-month period and saw the last male actor cast in July 2023. The process was rigorous as the right young people needed to be found, and I4YPC wanted to ensure that they gave as many young people as possible the opportunity to audition. 

All of the local colleges and higher education providers were notified of the auditions so that 

any of their students who were above the age of 18 could audition. 

During the audition process, Micky Dacks and Ange Lea ran workshops for the young people, providing them with a holistic, professional experience in which they were able to take away new knowledge and skills. 

All of the young actors who attended the workshops said that they found them beneficial and enjoyed the sessions! 

Through the audition process, the creative team were able to cast 9 young people who had never performed professionally before, or whom were very early on in their careers. 

The young man who starred in the show as the main protagonist ‘Ashley Thomas’ is local to Greater Manchester and had just finished studying at Salford University, when he was cast in the role. 

His graduation ceremony happened to be at The Lowry Theatre and he was able to stand in front of a promotional banner with his image on, whilst in his cap and gown! 






## THE ‘MAIN EVENT’ 



Over half of the young actors who starred in the show were offered representation from prestigious, Northern based agents who were very impressed with their talent.. 

I4YPC also continued their work with a 3rd year LIPA undergraduate on the set design, providing her with invaluable experience of working in a real-life situation with realistic deadlines and appropriate professional challenges. 

The student’s work inspired the final set design for the show and provided her with the experience she needed to fulfil the final module of her Technical Theatre degree. 

I4YPC were also able to provide professional opportunities for 3 young people who joined the creative team in the roles of Production Runner, Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) and Make-Up Artist, each one leaving the production with their own success story: 

Production Runner – one of I4YPC’s first young volunteers who had always expressed an interest in working in the industry. He was given the paid opportunity to be the Production 

Runner for the rehearsals and full run of the show and really grew into the role.  The stage management team were positive and encouraging of his abilities and he was offered some extra experience at The Lowry Theatre shadowing the sound engineer. 

Make-Up Artist – a young person who started as a volunteer at I4YPC from our inception as a charity.  Kane was offered the paid opportunity to be the only Make-Up artist on the show after several weeks of being put through his creative paces by developing make-up designs for the characters. 

During the first week of the production, he was approached by the Company Manager from ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ who were performing at The Lowry in the adjacent theatre at the same time. 

He joined them after the two-week run of ‘Innit’ for 4 months of their nationwide tour. 



## THE ‘INNIT 23 PROJECT’ 

“Being ASM for INNIT Musical was incredible for me, it allowed me to gain skills and experience I never had the chance to do before.  I4YPC gives young people like me amazing opportunities to gain skills in the Arts and gives them a chance to do something not a lot of people have access to.  It was an extraordinary experience, and something I will keep close to me forever.”

ASM – Whilst working at The Lowry Theatre on a casual basis, Micky Dacks approached her to see if she’d be interested in coming on board as ASM; to which she jumped at the chance.  The whole cast and creative team were impressed with her professionalism, work ethic and willingness to just roll her sleeves up and muck in!  Esme has now gone on to getting full time work in another Manchester based theatre and has now reached the final interviewing stages for a role in the props department of ‘Waterloo Road’. 

As a charity, we are thrilled that the young people we were able to give these professional opportunities to, have been able to use ‘Innit’ as a springboard to launch their careers. 





## THE ‘MAIN EVENT’ 

## THE AUDIENCE 

I4YPC had pledged over 1200 free tickets to the matinee performances of ‘Innit’ along with free transport, free programmes and complimentary resources for teachers. 

Four out of the six matinee performances (the two remainders being on Saturday afternoons) were all attended by local schools which I4YPC have been working with (including mainstream and special schools), local alternative provision groups and A level students who had been working on the script as part of their course. The experience was enjoyed by all the young people who attended, and one member of staff commented: 

“What was really special for my students, was watching their community being brought to life on stage.  The sense of connection they had with the play was unlike anything I have seen before, and they saw familiarity in characters and situations which they would not experience in any other play. We would like to extend a huge thank you to I4YPC who provided us with the opportunity for our students to experience

this free of charge.  For some, it was the first time they had ever been to the theatre.  A life changing experience for some, which may not have been possible without the charity”.

One local school brought 15 pupils from year 10 who were all on the cusp of being excluded from school and at risk of entering the criminal justice system.  One of the pupils was asked what he felt about the experience.  He said, “I liked how I could relate to the storyline….” and another pupil expressed, “It was relatable to the area of Salford and the people of that area, making it more realistic.” 

Two relaxed performances and two post show discussions were also part of the programme which meant that the show was fully accessible and that young audiences were able to meet the cast and crew. 

Not only did I4YPC fill the matinee performances with young people, but the evening performances were full of local people as well as The Lowry’s audiences, seeing a total of 3,900 audience members enjoying the show! 





## INNIT CREATIVE HUB: QUAYSIDE 

In April 2023, I4YPC finally got their own base at Quayside, MediaCity! Situated right in the heart of Salford Quays, this is the perfect place for I4YPC to call ‘home’ as the transport network allows young people to have access to our space from across Salford and Greater Manchester. 

As part of the Salford Loading project, I4YPC were given a double unit on the upper floor of the shopping mall; one space for a community art space and the other for a rehearsal space for ‘Innit’. 

In the 11 months of I4YPC being in-situ, hundreds of young people and their families have been through the doors. Here’s some of our data: 



- **373 young people and their families took part in our craft workshops!** 

- **168 young people supported their peers by becoming Art Acquirers!**

- **36 young people attended our bookable classes!** 


- **16 young people have become regular selling artists!** 

- **12 young people who attend Alternative Provision attended weekly art sessions!** 


- **3 young people have become fully enrolled volunteers!** 


I4YPC have also made a huge difference to the Quayside shopping mall which was experiencing a high level of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) prior to the arrival of the Creative Hub. 

As well as developing young artists, I4YPC have run classes for adults (Adult Abstract, Adult Splat, Creative Writing, Improvisation and adult Colour Creatives), enabled 20 adults to become selling artists and offered a safe space for community members of all ages to be creative. I4YPC have grown a regular and committed network of local people who visit the Creative Hub and support our cause. 

By simply being in a shopping mall and talking to members of the public, I4YPC have recruited six volunteers.  These are all people who

believe in what the charity is doing and can bring a different skill set to the team.  The volunteers regularly work in the shop, facilitate sessions for young people, fundraise and champion the work of I4YPC! 



## CASE STUDY 


One young person who has achieved a great deal of success and personal development through the Hub is ‘M’, a young trans male who has additional needs including Tourette’s, ADHD and Autism. 

When ‘M’ first came to the Hub in June 2023, he was socially anxious and didn’t really leave his house.  His grandparent and/or carers consistently brought him in every Sunday, as he is an incredible artist who had never had the chance to exhibit or sell his work. 

‘M’ spent time at the craft table making and creating amazing pieces of art which I4YPC started to sell in the gallery. 

Proving popular, ‘M’s’ work was literally flying out!  Week by week, ‘M’s’ confidence was 


growing and his grandparent and carers started to leave him in the space for short periods of time. 

During this time the I4YPC team noticed that ’M’ loved helping younger children with their arts and crafts and enjoyed having conversations with the general public. 

‘M’ started to visit the hub during week days with his carer(s) and I4YPC engaged with him to create flyers for workshops.  This was a paid opportunity for ‘M’ and helped supplement his benefits. 

‘M’ then expressed an interest in becoming a volunteer and has since received his DBS certificate, a full induction and has undertaken Safeguarding training with the rest of the I4YPC team. 

‘M’ is just one young person who has thrived through the Creative Hub.  I4YPC are proud of every single young person who steps foot in the Creative Hub and we look forward to seeing the space go from strength to strength.

## INNIT STUDIO THEATRE 

I4YPC were blessed in July 2024 to inherit Oldham Coliseum’s house curtains, blacks and auditorium seating so that our Studio Theatre could start to be developed. 

Throughout August 2023 the space was used to rehearse ‘Innit’, seeing the full cast and crew running open rehearsals, daily in the space. Now the show has finished, the space is being developed into the Innit Studio Theatre, which will see: 





**Employability opportunities in the arts for young people in areas like (but not limited to) set design, lighting design, stage management, script writing and other creative and technical areas of the Arts. Young people’s open music events. Drama workshops.** 

**The chance for I4YPC to ‘grow their own’ cast and crew ready for our proposed nationwide tour of ‘Innit’ in 2029, which will reach thousands of young people.**

## ‘INNIT’ IN SCHOOLS 


As well as ‘Innit’ appearing at The Quays Theatre, The Lowry, it is still being utilised as an educational resource in schools across Greater Manchester, including (but not limited to) Moorside High School, St Patrick’s RC  High School and Irlam and Cadishead Academy. 

## ‘INNITRIGHTNOW’ COOP ACADEMY SWINTON 

Following on from the successful ‘InnitRightNow’ GMVRU project in January 2023, I4YPC were asked to run the project with eight young people at Coop Academy Swinton. All of the participants were in Year 10. 

I4YPC had met the young people at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year when they had been identified as being on the cusp of permanent exclusion.  The project ran over a 6-week period in the Spring Term and each session lasted 90 minutes.  The shorter sessions were due to a lack of funding from the school. The project used the script from ‘Innit’ as a vehicle of engagement and culminated in the participants creating a ‘Talking Heads’ style speech to camera. 

## HEADLINES 

**100% of the participants stayed in school and sat their mock exams in preparation for Year 11** 



**The attendance of the 8 participants averaged at 76% in the Autumn Term and increased to an average of 91% over the duration of the course.** 

**The number of negative behaviour points per participant decreased significantly over the duration of the project.  Many of the participants had 0 negative points recorded for three months after the project. All participants spent less time in the school’s isolation unit and were spending more time in their timetabled lessons.** 



## IMPACT 

The impact of those headlines is that the pupils reported that they were feeling happier and more settled in school.  The teachers reported that the participants were able to make better choices about their behaviours in and out of school.  All 



eight participants remained in school, despite exclusion being an imminent prospect. 

## WIGAN ‘SEND’ CONFERENCE 

In June 2023, Micky Dacks and Ange Lea were invited to be guest speakers at the Wigan SEND conference which was held at Leigh Sports Village. 

The conference was attended by all primary and secondary school leaders and SENDCOs (Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinators) from across Wigan local authority. 

They were asked to present 2 x 30-minute presentations to the groups of leaders outlining the charitable objectives and work of I4YPC and how their services can be used in school to help prevent exclusions. 

The day was a huge success and I4YPC were pleased with the overwhelming response from school leaders who wanted to know how to bring their pupils to see ‘Innit’ and book I4YPC for projects.  Surprisingly, a lot of interest was from primary colleagues who were expressing their concerns about issues which are generally 

linked to secondary aged pupils, starting at a much earlier age. 

From this conference, schools in Wigan have become more aware of I4YPC’s work thus expanding our outreach. We were asked to meet with Wigan’s Inclusion Manager and have been put on the list of their provision providers. 

A huge success story from this conference is the work Micky Dacks has been doing with a Year 10 pupil from one of the schools in Wigan, who was on the verge of being permanently excluded from school.  Micky started mentoring the young man in February 2023 and the impact thus far has been: 

**Improved attendance from 2 days per week to 5 days** 


- **The pupil is now allowed to walk freely around the school rather than being chaperoned** 



- **The pupil has increased their ability to make better choices i.e. not socialising with young people who veer him towards negative situations** 





## JESSIE’S WALL 

Jessie’s Wall is a project that has been ongoing for some time, due to logistical reasons.  The project started when our CEO met Lisa Davenport at Moss Side Millenium Powerhouse during the lockdown of 2020. 

During this meeting, Micky stumbled across a derelict wall in Moss Side Community Park, which had a faded spray-painted mural.  It turned out that a young person named Jessie James had been murdered in the park 15 years ago, and the mural was created by Jessie’s best friends as a memorial to him. 

Micky was touched by the story and wished to help reimagine the wall, creating a more permanent memorial to Jessie James, whilst also highlighting the increasing prevalence of youth violence in Greater Manchester and beyond. 

The project had many logistical problems, from acquiring relevant permissions from Manchester City Council, to enabling the sculpture to be created using sustainable materials, utilising modern 3D printing technology.

Micky wished to create the most realistic version of Jessie but was limited to three poor quality photographs that were available from his tragically short life.  It took Micky almost a year, having to trail through over 25,000 digital artists, to find the right digital modeller to create Jessie’s image as a teenager. 

The project also engaged with 18 local children, all of whom partook in the design of the lettering. 

After four years of wading through bureaucracy, I4YPC were delighted to finally achieve what we’d set out to, and on the 27th October 2023, we were able to unveil the memorial wall, in the presence of Jessie’s family and the local community. 

This was really something, given that Jessie’s family hadn’t been back to Moss Side in over a decade. 

We were absolutely delighted that on the 16th November 2023, our CEO Micky Dacks was invited to host HRH Prince William, who was visiting Moss Side to view the wall and hear from Jessie’s mother, who had also not been back to 



Moss Side since Jessie’s death 15 years ago. 

There was a lot of press coverage for this visit, and we are pleased to have been able to give Jessie’s mum a voice in the national arena, to address the injustices in Jessie’s case, and those facing young males in Britain today. 

The sculpture was cast in resin, but thanks to the generosity of the Director of Castle Fine Arts Foundry, Jessie’s sculpture will be replaced with a stainless-steel cast, meaning that the memorial will last for all perpetuity. 



## FUNDRAISING 

2023-2024 has been a busy year in terms of fundraising!  I4YPC have received funding from their regular supporters such as KFC Foundation, BUPA Foundation and Asda Foundation. 

A Crowdfunder was also launched in anticipation of the ‘Innit ‘23’ programme which saw a whopping £20,000 raised by private donors and match-funding from the local authority. 

As well as applying for funding, the I4YPC team took to the supermarkets and were regularly bucket collecting in Asda Swinton and Morrisons Eccles. 

The Innit Creative Hub also proved to be an excellent income generator, seeing £17,380.84 in the first 11 months!

## LOOKING TO OUR YEAR AHEAD... 

**This has been a sensational year for I4YPC, having successfully reached all the  goals of our 2019-2024 strategy and business plan, culminating with the ‘Innit 23’ programme.** 

We have also demonstrated incremental financial growth year on year, with our income in this financial period surpassing £100,000 and thus elevating our status from micro charity to small charity. 

In the next reporting period, we look forward to building on our successful delivery partnership with GMCA, having already secured our second publicly funded project, ‘Come to the Hub’. 

This programme will see some of Salford’s most vulnerable children and young people attending weekly sessions at the Innit Creative Hub, with the additional value of enterprise, whereby the young participants will have the opportunity to make money by hosting their own market stall.

We are delighted that the Innit Creative Hub has proven such an invaluable asset to young people and their families in our locality.  Given that this was an unplanned addition to our services offer, we are extremely proud of its achievements. 

We always look to recruit young people who come through our doors as service users, as volunteers.   This year, we have grown our volunteer base significantly, and we are delighted to have been able to give some of our young people casual paid roles within the organisation. 

In 2024/2025, we plan to overhaul the charity’s branding, bringing a cohesive and recognisable emblematic format that unifies our strands of service:

In the coming months, we will be expanding our board, seeking out talented individuals with relevant skillsets, to help develop our strategy for the next five years, which will culminate in a theatre tour of Innit: The Musical, reaching tens 

of thousands of young people, nationwide. We have always prided ourselves on being a ‘young people first’ organisation, and only by continuing to listen, engage and involve young people, have we been able to grow and develop our service. 

For each and every young person that has come through our doors, whether they have walked in spontaneously, have been targeted through our outreach projects, or referred in to our services via social services or other providers, I want to take this opportunity to offer each and every one of them my gratitude. 

May I also extend this gratitude to all of our supporters, both administratively and financially, without whom the work of our organisation might not exist. 

It has been my pleasure and honour to serve as CEO for our incredible charity, and I look forward to the year ahead, and to everything that the future holds for I4YPC.
