31 December 2025.

with the Rertor, Father Paul Butler, in promotin8 the whole mission of the Church in the parish,. this includes.

The Rector and the PCC of S. Paul's agreed the Parish's Misslon priorities in the 2017 Mission Actlon Plan:

and Fn particular specific Èuldancè on charities for the advancement of rÈlTr81on.
To facilitate the work of the parish, it is important that the PCC maintalns the fabric of the Churth of S. Paul,
which is a Grade I Ilsted building and one of the finest e¥amples of Early English Baroque ectlesiastical
archltecture in the country.
The PCC is fully <ommltted to fulfilling its legal responslbllities for Health and Safety and also to the vital work
of Safeguarding. We have a Safeguarding Team that meets regularty, and we follow the pollcies arml
procedures of the Diocese of Southwark.

The tradltiffial Anglo-catholic Parish Mass, with Its muslG processions and ritual an Sunday mornin85 attracts
a dfverse, multi-ethnic congregation, of about 70 people in thurch, includinR approximately 12 chIld￿n. It is
important to note that there is a diverse and ever-¢han8ing congregatlon ol more than 150 people of all a8es
ttènding at leatt once a month.
People are attracted to S. Paul's for a multitude of reasons. Including our mix of catholic worship. choral music.
intellertual en8a8ement. and pastoral care, solemnty, diversity, inclusivity and frièndship.
At thè 2025 APCM held on May 25th 2025 there were 106 on the Church Electoral Roll, the vast majority of
whom live in Deptford. The Sunday morning corvdregation includes people who are on the Roll and many
people who arÈ not. Thè attèndance increases at festivals and this often includes a number of Visitor5.
There is also a daily Mass, and daily Morning and Evening Pfayer every week from Tuesday to Saturday, which
the Rector and PCC ￿gard as the foundation of all the work and service of the parish church and essential for
the mission of God in Deptford. MembÈrs of thè divÈrse community of Deptford attend these services. The
hurth is open for all the services. Accordir48ly at regular times throughout the day, tasual visitors are able to
enter the church. either to join the services, or to pray and reflett quietly in the church. P35torèl encounters
frèquèntly follow the services, when the clergy a￿ able to asslst people who are in spiritual or physical need.

We have maintained our hybrid approach to public worshTrp, and havÈ continued to broadcast the Sunday
Parrsh, and all map)r weekday servI￿s, to reach the broadest participation.
Music plays an important role in the life of S. Pavl's featuring the magnificÈnce of our organist and Dlrector of
Music, Mr William Parkirb50n and our choir, S. Paul's Singers. We have one of London's finest pipe or8ans
{made by William Drake) and it is played to great effert by our organist and assiStant-or8ani5ts to accompany
our bl-weekly Sunday and Festival Choral Masses which are very popular, as is our now annual choral carol
Servi￿ (more than 2C¥) at this years. servicel, and has brought many new people from the communSry into the
lifÈ of the churth.
As well as the re8ular ser¥ites, the Rector and PCC enable the community to celebrate and thank God at the
milestones of the journey through life. Through baptism the ¢ommunity thank God for the 8ift of Dew lrfe and
rejoice at the conversion of ad¢Jlts to the faith, in marria8è public vows are exchanged with God'i blessln& and
throLtgh Requiem Masses and funeral seNices, famlly and friÈnds èxpiess thelr grief and give thanks for the
lrfe, which is complete in this world and commend the person Into God's safe keeping. S. Paul's celebrated 3
baptisms11 child, 2 adultsl, 2 wedding, and 3 thurch Funerals, O buria15 of ashes in the churchyard memorial
garden, and B adult Holy ConfTrmiations.
S. Paul's offers ed¥Jcation in the Christian faith through a varièty of means,. homilies and 5errnons at every
Ma4 and the Omega Course, a weekly online discussion group foi ChrTrstian education.
Refe￿nce is made to the section above on worship, which outlines the way in which the worship of S. Paul's
serves the communty in Deptford, by providing daily Massek The daity office5 and the pastornl offi￿5 thus
enable tonsidetsble spiritual and pastoral support to bè gNèn to the community. Also our large and well
mabntained churchyard is a source of much community engagernènt and where people are able to enjoy pea
nd santtuary the midst of a very challenglng inner ctty area.
S. Paul's Parish takes in the heart of the Deptford Community, one of the most diverse neighbourhood5 in
London in terms of ethnicity whith is fully represented in our congregation. IV5 a tommunity with è hi8her
than avera8e population of youn8eT people and multiple economic deprivation. Deprford is a mature. complex
and fasdnating place of joy ener8y and struggle.

There are high levels of socFal exclLtslon. We have the hlghest chlld poverty rate within thè Diocese of
Southwark at 34%, and the 241st highest in the country; there are extremely high rates of pensioner poverty at
44%. the 129th highest in the ¢ovntry,' and working age poverty 24%, ranked 538th In the country.
Deptlord. a former dock area on the River Thames, is the northernmost area of the London 8orou8h of
Lewisham, Southeast London. There is a high density of population and predominantly social housing150%I in
high and low rise estates. The main artery and Cent￿ of life of the Parish 15 Deptford High Street. which
reflerts the diversity of tts ethnit and culturèl communitiÈs through its shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and
services. There is a ￿brant and growFng creative arts sertor, related in part to the nearby Goldsmith's
Universty, Trinlty Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dancè, with artists, studios and gallèries in fomier

ghlighted 'tt)ol and hip, neighbourhood in London. and popular wlth hipsters, creative5 and nèw businesses.

wÈalthy. ThÈre is great poverty. diversity and constant change, instability, precarious and transiènt ItFestyks.

S. Paul's seeks to engage with the Issues, which arise from this context in a variety of ways. We support thè
work of lo¢al organisations that hèlp ￿ople rebuild lives that have ￿en damaged by homelessness, mental
illness. drug or alcohol abuse and social exclusion. We work wtth a range of local parniers who offer a wide
range tsf suppts¢ advo￿. trainin8 and practital help. We a150 made a gift at Harvèst to the Lewisham Churches
for Asylum Seekers.
Pauys is one of the founder mèmbers of the ecurnenical body, Deptford Churches ToBÉther [°D￿l. The
Rector is the current Chair. The clergy and lalty of the membèr churches meet regularly to share èxperlences
and ideas, to fonvard the mlsslon ot God to the community of Deptford.
The Parish Misslon Artion Plan IMAPI was revised in 2017, it states. "we. the Chnstion community of S. Poul's

The PCC membership Is made up of people from a wSde variÈty of national and ethnic back8rounds and
accuratèly refiects the 60% black mlnority ethnic IUKMEI composition of the congregation, including both
Churchwafdèfts, and PCC Members. The cong￿EatIon is roughly SO% womèn ènd SO% men. The Se￿on8 Team
is made up of adults, youth and children, both male and female and fijlty representative of all diversities. The
PCC ha5 not adopted any ofthe statutory resolutlons against women priests.
The church seèks to celebrate and maintaln the traditional Inchjsivity artd diversity of the Anglican
Communion. This is refletted in every level of participation at S. Paul's. There are many roles for members of
the rhurch to partlcipate in its life ènd worship a5 lay officers, PCC members, seThers, readers, intertessors,
cleaners, clÈanlng and maintenance tasks lor people, Safeguardi￿ offi￿rS, sides pèopFÈ etc. These roles are
filled by thany members ofthe ¢ommunlty.
indicated above, S. Pauvs is a Grade I listed bullding and Is a fine example of Early English Baroque
architetture. The building accordingly attratts a @￿at deal of intèrest and tourism. The church is r￿t only open
before. during and after publit worship, but is also open at other times by arran8emont for Yisits by studènts
and enthusaasts of architerture, for other visitors.
In addition, the church is hired for audio and vt5ual rÈcOrdI￿ We occasional professional recordings,
Students of dance and of film also hirè the church from time to time, and we have facilitated many
architectural visits, including for academic and research purposes. S. Paufs is licensed for publtc pèrformances

S. Paul's is ILKated next to a key, and what has been for over the part decade a malor ¢onstruction sltè for the
largest ongotng infrastrurture projett in Europe, the Thames Trdeway Tunnel I'super sewe¢l. The overall
projett is now reaching completion and the sitè is now subject to the pott-tonstruction landscapin& & Paul's
Churth has been thè most siBnificant Grade I listed buildrng affected by thè entire projert. which St￿tCheS
from west to east London. The site is beside the south side of the thurch, on the Ereen bÈtwÈèn Coffey, and
Crossfield, StrÈÈts. DUÈ to the major impatt this Constructlon site has had upon the church, an Asset
Protection Agreement betMeen S. Paul's PCC and Thames fideway has been in place, with a variety of
mitigation measures to protert and monitor the heritage and fabrlc of the church and also to enable the work
and mission of S. Paul's as a Parish Church. The Tideway Projett overran its original timescale and was
completed in 2025. rather than In 2020. Works were on80inB, causing disruptron to everyone in the vicinrty
and additionally affeut our hiring income. The agreement with Thames Water. negotiated by the Rertor and S.
Paul's legal advFsor has protetted the parish from risks ass¢xiated wlth this pmiect.
There is also a major re-development of Cr055field and Coffey Streets in progress adjacent to the church and
churthy3rd on the south slde. which Includes the rebuilding of the road and new landscaping to tonnètt with
the Tideway str landstaping. Thls wlll improve the environment around the churchyard and open up views to
the churth from the east and south.
S. Paul's is also currently embaTklng on a redevelopment projert aimèd at long tem7 sustainability of the
church fabrfc. improving the facilitie5 Wjthin the crypt and nave of the chLtrch. and exploring the
redevelopment of the fornier charnel house in the churchyard for Into a mU￿￿￿$t space to be able to support
future mission and commèrtial attivities. We have also submitted an application for a Faculty to renew the
church bells and tower dock.
