## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT**

## **YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023**

The trustees have the pleasure in presenting their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

The relief of financial hardship amongst people in Derby and the surrounding area aged 16 and above, in such ways as the trustees from time to time think fit, in particular, but not exclusively by:

- A) Providing emergency food, essential toiletries and household items to individuals and families in need and/or for distribution by charities or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.

- B) Such other means, including (but not limited to) the provision of support or signposting to relevant information and other advisory services.

## **SUMMARY OF THE MAIN ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN RELATION TO THESE OBJECTS**

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees meetings.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

We set up a food bank once a week on Saturdays for people in need. On all other days in the week, we put out food essentials such as bread, vegetables and fruit which we have donated to us and collect from supermarkets such as Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons, CO-OP, Aldi, Lidl, Birds and also Greggs sandwich shops. We set a table up for people to come along and take what they need for their families. We pay a membership fee to Fareshare Midlands to collect approx 480kg worth of food on a weekly basis to run the food bank and this costs around £10,000 per year. We also run a separate food parcel service which was by professional referral only. Referrals came from schools, Derby City Council, support workers, social services, probation officers and doctors.

Based on average numbers of people that used our service we have estimated that we have supplied more than 10,000 food parcels during the year of 2023.

We now have over 500 members signed up to use the food bank on a regular basis. No membership is needed to use the service for extra donations received in the week people can just come along and take what they need.

We set up a street kitchen every Tuesday evening in Derby city centre seeing on average around 60 to 80 people each night we were out. We have food donated from Harvey Road fish bar, Kedleston Road chip shop, volunteers cook, volunteers make sandwiches, donations from Greggs, along with hot and cold drinks. We also take out essential items such as sleeping bags, clothing, and toiletries.

In February of this year, we had a storage building and car port built to make it easier and more accessible for us to run the charity.

At Easter we distributed over 800 Easter eggs out at our food bank, street kitchen, schools, nurseries and care homes.

In May we were invited to Buckingham Palace gardens for tea as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme awards ceremony for the work we do with our 3 students who do their award with us.

In the summer holidays we distributed a 1000 breakfast bags for families over a six week period with support from Argos Osmaston Park and Argos Kingsway.

We raised funds in July by running a tombola at the Caribbean carnival.

In November we did a advent calendar appeal and managed to give out over 1400 across the food bank, street kitchen, nurseries, schools and care homes.

At Christmas we gave out over 500 Christmas hampers for families to cook at home along with gifts for the children and adults, a board game for each family, along with chocolates and treats. We also had Santa and his elves present to give out the gifts to the children.
