MSA Aims & Objectives

Muslimah Sports Association (MSA) was established in 2014 becoming a charity in 2019.

The Team

It is with sadness that we announce the resignation of Ibtisam Belola as a Board Trustee. We thank her for her invaluable support and contributions during her time with us.

We welcomed Kevin Yusuf and Sofina Khanom to the Board of Trustees.

MSA Key Impact Data

MSA has registered over 3914 participant attendances across 388 delivered sessions and 6564 contact hours, this financial year

MSA Highlights from April 2023 - March 2024

I am pleased to report another highly successful and eventful year for the Charity.

The year began on a prestigious note with an invitation to Lord’s Cricket Ground and Wembley to celebrate, helping both the FA and Lords cricket celebrate and increase the awareness of Ramadan.

In May, Salma organised a ‘Walking Together’ picnic in collaboration with the Faith & Belief Forum, bringing together fifty participants and their families to enjoy a scenic walk around Fairlop Waters, followed by a delicious picnic.

MSA was also honoured to be invited to the APSE conference, where we had the opportunity to highlight the barriers Muslim women face in accessing sports and physical activities.

As Chair, I was deeply humbled to be recognised for my charitable work, receiving the Asian Women Award for Sports, inclusion in the Top 50 Most Influential Muslims in Europe, and the ‘Sisters in Business Award’. Equally I was proud to be invited to 10 Downing Street to discuss representation in sports.

We started our journey to increase Muslim female participation into NFL as two of our MSA coaches successfully completed the NFL coaching activator course, which has now started the successful delivery of NFL football programming.

Our MSA Dragons team performed brilliantly at the Al Noor Annual Dragon Boat Race, achieving third place overall. Very proud to be part of a charitable initiative that raised almost £300m.

This accomplishment set the stage for an even greater victory at the Charity Boat Race, where we secured first place with an impressive time of 1:04! The Board extends its heartfelt congratulations to the team for their dedication and outstanding performance. Funds raised from the event will benefit many local and international charities.

Frenford & MSA Women’s FC also had a remarkable year, earning the Lioness Award from Essex FA. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire team, as well as our managers, in ensuring the club’s continued success.

With the support of Living Streets, MSA’s Positive Minds group enjoyed a memorable visit to Kew Gardens, a first-time experience for many of the participants.

We also extend our congratulations to Lipa and Ibtisam on their graduation from the Sporting Equals Leadership Academy.

MSA celebrated several milestones this year, including our first-ever overseas trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Heritage Project

We are very proud to be selected in a National Heritage project. The ‘ Muslim Women in Sports Heritage’ project, is an exhibition showcasing the contributions of Muslim women in sports. People in generations to come will look back at our participants to see how Muslim women engaged in Sports during 2020s. This exhibition has already started to tour various locations across London, further promoting awareness and appreciation of their achievements.

As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, MSA launched the Creating HERstory : Celebrating 10 Years of Muslimah Sports Association Heritage Project, supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This initiative reflects on our journey by capturing and sharing the stories of our members, both past and present. We invited MSA members and individuals who have been involved with us to contribute their experiences and memories, helping to build a rich sound archive of the Muslimah Sports Association’s history.

The stories collected throughout the project were showcased in an exhibition, complemented by photography and historical material sourced from archives. This exhibition will tour various locations across London throughout 2024 and beyond, offering a unique insight into the impact of MSA over the past decade.

The project is led by professional Oral Historian and Project Manager, Laura Owen, who has extensive experience working with museums, galleries, and community organisations to deliver heritage projects. Laura trained volunteers, provided project support, and helped facilitate this opportunity for MSA to celebrate its history and share the voices of our community.

MSA New Partnership with Forestry England

MSA established a new and impactful partnership with Forestry England this year, aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of ethnic minority women in national forests and parks. Recognising the importance of outdoor activities for both physical health and mental wellbeing, MSA collaborated with Forestry England to promote the benefits of walking nature. This initiative has been highly successful, with MSA actively supporting the This Girl Can: Let’s Get Out There campaign.

in

In addition to promoting outdoor activities, this partnership has also provided Forestry England with valuable insights into the specific barriers faced by ethnic minority women, particularly Muslim women. These include the need for spaces to pray and other cultural considerations, which will help make these environments more accessible and inclusive.

MSA in Bosnia

In a significant milestone for the organization, MSA successfully arranged its inaugural international trip, taking twenty women to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Organised in collaboration with Holiday in Bosnia , the trip aimed to offer participants a unique opportunity to explore the country’s rich Islamic heritage while also learning about its complex history, including the devastation caused by war and the ongoing process of rebuilding.

The four-day journey was designed to be both educational and reflective. Participants were able to visit important cultural and historical sites, gaining a deeper understanding of Bosnia’s Islamic roots and the significant role it has played in shaping the region's identity. The trip also provided a platform to learn firsthand about the tragic events of the Bosnian War, including the genocide, and to hear the personal stories of those affected by the conflict.

While the trip was filled with moments of awe and appreciation for the country's beauty and resilience, it was also profoundly humbling. The opportunity to connect with local communities and survivors of the war left a lasting impact on the participants, fostering a sense of solidarity and reflection on the importance of peace, unity, and cultural preservation.

Overall, the trip was a resounding success, combining cultural exploration, education, and personal growth. It has paved the way for future international initiatives that will continue to enrich the experiences of our members and expand the horizons of the Muslimah Sports Association.

Delighted to Augment our Collection with Additional Accolades

MSA added the following to our award chest:

- Persistence in Enhancing Grassroots Level Sports Participation.

Ballet:

In collaboration with Grace & Poise , MSA successfully launched female-only Ballet Fit classes, offering participants the opportunity to try ballet for the first time. This initiative was met with great enthusiasm, providing a unique fitness experience that many had not previously explored.

NFL:

Two of our MSA coaches achieved NFL Activator certification, enabling us to expand our sports offering. As a result, young people were introduced to NFL football for the first time, broadening their exposure to different types of physical activity.

Nordic Walking:

Our Nordic Walking initiative has been a resounding success, particularly among women from Muslim backgrounds, who have increasingly ventured into local forests and parks. This

collaborative effort with Forestry England not only encouraged physical activity but also helped identify and address cultural barriers, making these green spaces more accessible and welcoming.

Cycling:

Our beginners’ cycling classes remain extremely popular, with many participants eager to learn or improve their cycling skills. This program continues to attract new cyclists and fosters confidence in those progressing through their cycling journey.

Karate:

Led by Sensai Donna, our karate program continues to thrive, with students growing in confidence and regularly achieving new grading belts. The discipline and commitment shown by our students are evident in their continued progress.

Other Activities:

In addition to these new initiatives, our existing

programs—including Badminton, Positive Minds, Yoga, Basketball, and Qi Gong—continue to flourish, with each activity gaining momentum and contributing to the overall success of MSA’s diverse sports and wellness offerings.

Collaborative Partnerships Continue to Strengthen.

Our new partnership with Living Streets has resulted in several successful initiatives, including Photography Walks, where participants were able to combine learning new photography skills with the benefits of walking. This initiative has been warmly received, offering a creative and engaging way to promote physical activity. The course concluded with a visit to Kew Gardens to practice the photography skills learned.

In collaboration with Khadija Mellah’s Riding a Dream Academy , our young participants had the exciting opportunity to spend a day at the British Racing School in Newmarket. This was an enriching experience, giving them firsthand insight into what it takes to become a jockey and explore the world of horse racing. The day was both informative and inspiring for all involved.

The My London Consortium project supported by Greater London Authority and the Mayor of London concluded with great success.

In collaboration with Frenford Clubs, Shpresa and Barking & Dagenham Youth Dance has seen the project engage with over 80 young people across Redbridge and Barking & Dagenham. The Young people worked together on a Social Impact Project which was presented to parents and stakeholders.

We were honoured to have England legend Rachel Yankey and ex-England Manager Gareth Southgate send their best wishes to the team and mangers at Frenford & MSA Women’s FC . Supported by the FA and Essex County FA, Frenford & MSA WFC has continued to open and support opportunities for women to step over the sidelines to become

players or coaches. We have seen our numbers increase from 5 to 18 year plus which we are delighted with. The team enjoyed a visit to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea WFC vs Manchester United WFC as part of team bonding day.

Impactful Community Initiatives

MSA continues to support and work in collaboration with other charities. Office manager Salma made a huge impact to the community with her work with the Faith and Belief forum, Muslim Hands and Al Noor Foundation.

This year was our fifth year in participating in the Al Noor Dragon Boat Race 2023, where MSA raised over £4000., but was part of an initiative that raised over £300m for the community.

MSA collaborated with the Muslim Sports Foundation and the FA to host the largest Introduction to Coaching festival to date, specifically designed for aspiring coaches. This landmark event provided over 80 Muslim women with the opportunity to explore and gain a deeper understanding of football coaching. It marked the first time the FA has engaged with Muslim women

on such a large scale, creating a significant milestone in promoting diversity and inclusion within the sport.

MSA extends its sincere gratitude to the partners who have played a pivotal role in helping us achieve our mission. We are thankful for the support of the London Marathon Trust, Faith and Belief Forum, Mayor of London, National Heritage Fund, Beyond Sport, Barking Sports 4 Change, Living Streets, and Mind Charity.

These partnerships have been instrumental in advancing our goals of increasing representation and expanding opportunities in sports for underrepresented communities. We deeply appreciate their recognition of the importance of collaboration in delivering our shared objectives.

MSA Coverage in the Media

Showcasing all our work MSA has made appearances on the BBC Sunday Morning Live, ITV, SKY News, Channel S, and across several BBC Radio stations.

MSA in the Future

MSA aims to continue being the largest sports charity for Muslim females in sport and plans to expand its operation nationwide by supporting and advising other sport community groups with aligned ethos with MSA. We have recognised the importance to grow, learn and evolve. We have engaged the services of the Cranfield Trust to do a strategic review. Great progress has been made, and phase two is now underway.

As the leading charity for Muslim women in sports, our ambition progressed to also become the National Governing Body for Muslim women in sport., by increasing and enabling more Muslim female participation in sports.
