Chairman’s Report 2021-2022

We have emerged strongly from COVID, much to everyone’s relief, and with new trustees, new young people, and even new volunteers, and now a new trainee youth worker, the future is looking bright!

These are some of the highlights of the past year:

  1. Immerse (10-14s) resumed its in-person meetings and has seen numbers steadily growing. Our decision a couple of years ago to “grow up” with this group has paid dividends, with us seeing some particular highlights this year:

  2. a. Numbers have grown in consistency and members have begun to invite their friends along.

  3. b. Members continue to engage well with the Bible teaching aspect of the group, and we have been able to deepen and develop this in recent months.

  4. c. A few have started to attend from the football outreach, and they have fully engaged in all aspects of the group.

  5. d. We held our first Immerse Campout overnight in July and 15 young people attended.

  6. e. A few of our older Immerse members attended the SWYM TAG Conference with a youth group from Wadebridge and had a great time exploring leadership development.

  7. f. A good number attended the Menadue Camp over the summer.

  8. The older – still un-named! – youth group continued with just the 4/5 girls but has been appreciated and the recent relaunch has been well received and seen new members from Immerse attend as they are now old enough to do so.

  9. Football has ticked over nicely with a consistent following and some good connections with wider families being established too.

  10. Holiday socials have become a key part of the BYP calendar and seen a healthy mix of young people from all our activities attending.

  11. We have continued to enjoy the support of SU (Scripture Union) through Chris Eales, the SW area worker.

  12. In terms of trustees:

  13. a. Alistair Sharp left his post as Superintendent Minister and moved away after years of faithful service as our treasurer. My sincere thanks to him. Steve Ovens kindly assumed his duties.

  14. b. Marie Wisheart kindly agreed to become a trustee and minute taker.

  15. c. Lizzy Smallwood kindly took on the safeguarding role, and a very successful training evening was held jointly with Light and Life Church.

  16. Our major decision this past year was whether to become a placement for a SWYM (South West Youth Ministries) trainee youth worker. After much prayer and consideration, and a significant step of faith, I am delighted to say that Hosanna Roper has recently started with us, and we are excited to see what developments this will bring.

  17. We remain blessed with churches that support us with finances and with facilities and premises. This always has been a joint venture, and it continues to be so to the credit of the churches involved.

Looking forward, we now need to build a stronger financial foundation and will seek to do so through both churches’ and individuals’ giving. Having restructured the groups a little as the young people have aged, I am hopeful that our foundations will now be something we can continue to build upon and that we will see young people increasingly exploring, discovering and growing in their faith,

I end this report once again thankful for God’s faithfulness and direction over this past year and extremely grateful to my colleagues in this work.
