**Angelique Schmitt** CEO, Kindred Studios 


enriching our culture. Over the last ten years, I’ve been witness to this transformation across three different sites. 

**With the support of my board and my creative Kindred family, I’ve been fortunate to witness our evolution from artist studios into something far more meaningful.** 

Here are a few key questions to help me explain what makes Kindred Studios so very special. **Angelique** 

Defining what makes us unique has been a challenge for me because Kindred is unlike any other artist studio. Visitors often emphatically remark on how AMAZING our creative home is! 

**Kindred Studios is more of an intentional Artist Community than Artist Studios but what’s the difference?** An Intentional Artist Community is a purposefully created space where artists come together, united 

My favourite analogy for Kindred is that, just as bees produce honey whilst unintentionally pollinating agriculture, artists create art whist 

by shared values of reciprocity, openness, and a commitment to a culture of support. While artist studios often serve as mere workspaces – sometimes extending to professional networking—our belief is that focusing solely on pragmatic career needs overlooks something profoundly valuable: the deeper connections and collective growth that emerge from a true artistic community. 

**Why are Intentional Artist Communities important?** Intentional Artist Communities foster huge resilience. While our artist studios provide spaces for professional growth, networking, and possible collaboration, it is the culture of generosity and reciprocity within our artist community that truly allows artists to thrive. 

By supporting both the creative and personal wellbeing of our artists, we create the right ’safe’ conditions for them to develop 

their unique expression. Our culture not only serves the individuals within our community but is also transmitted to the local area through our public engagements programmes and events, thus strengthening connections between artists and the wider public and allowing art to travel further to reach people who don’t ever attend galleries. 

**How is art a catalyst for change?** 

The modern world overstimulates our rational mind – the part of us that insists it is always right. While art has the power to provoke thought on wider issues, it also transcends language, allowing people to connect and feel on a deeper level. Artists create the material and conditions for individuals to find meaning in their lives, and meaning fosters purpose – something essential to our humanity and a catalyst for real transformation.

**Olatunji’s work exhibited in London, China, Singapore, Netherlands, Germany and US** Painter Babajide Olatunji starts the academic year with a group show Africa Supernova at the Kunsthal kAdE museum in Netherlands, with his solo exhibitions at TAFETA in London and Pearl Lam Galleries in Shanghai in March 2024. 

## Individual artists’ achievements 


**Summer Exhibition at the RA** Three artists from the community – Camilla Brendon, Luke White and Sophie Orde – have been selected to exhibit at Royal Academy’s infamous Summer Exhibition, the world’s largest open submission exhibition. There were approximately 16,000 submissions and only 1000 artists are selected each year. 

Olatunji also exhibited his prolific work with Pearl Lam Galleries at Westbund Art and Design Fair in Shanghai, China in November 2023, followed by Art Cologne in Germany, artSG in Singapore, TEFAF in Maastricht and Dallas Art Fair in the US.

## **Amelia Lancaster at** 

## **The National Theatre** 

Photographer Amelia Lancaster has her solo exhibition _Abstractions: studies of the National Theatre_ in the Wolfson Gallery at the National Theatre. Amelia Lancaster’s practice is highly influenced by materiality and architecture. 


She has tirelessly worked on producing abstract images of Southbank, including the National Theatre building for a few years before being offered a solo exhibition at their gallery. Amelia’s exhibition was mentioned by _The Guardian_ and _The Architectural Review_ . 


**Sound designer Ines Alves’ work is shown at the Cannes and Locarno film festivals** 

Sound designer Ines worked on a film _On Falling_ , directed by Laura Carreira, which was shown at the Cannes film festival, premiered at BFI London in autumn 2024 and is set to reach other cinemas in late 2024. The other significant piece of work is the film called _Washhh_ , directed by a well acclaimed director Mickey Lai, whose film premiered at the Locarno film festival.

**Abbas Zahedi at Tate Modern** Multidisciplinary artist Abbas Zahedi’s solo exhibition at Tate Modern, opening in early 2025, has been confirmed. Since the commission, Abbas has used his studio space to run his Research and Development process as well as a place to invite members of the public to see the early stages of a significant upcoming show. 

## **Textile artist Rachna Garodia at Alexandra Palace, London Design Festival** 

It has been a busy professional year for textile artist Rachna Garodia, who is represented by Ruup & Form gallery. Rachna’s work was shown at the London Design Festival (September 2023), London Art Fair (January 2024), Collect Art Fair (March 2024) and Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace (October 2024). 



**Jon Rees Changing Perspectives x TK Maxx and Imperial Health** _Changing Perspectives_ , reflective photographic course, founded by multidisciplinary artist Jon Rees gained a lot of momentum this year. Jon programmed an interactive 8 week course, with the aim of exploring how photography can help improve our wellbeing and connect with others and the world around us. Throughout two series of the course, 21 Imperial health patients engaged in 14 Changing Perspectives sessions in 2023–24, totalling 600 hours. 

Jon Rees has also successfully run a series of Changing Perspectives for his biggest to date commercial client TK Maxx. His course was 

attended by a number of their employees from TK Maxx offices as a Wellbeing Day. 

As a multidisciplinary creative, Jon also programmed and ran graffiti and wellbeing courses for participants from Kids on the Green **www.kidsonthegreen.com** as well as Action on Disability **aod.org.uk** . 


**Ceramicist Helena Lacy graduated from** 

## **Royal College of Arts** 

Whilst working from Kindred, ceramicist Helena Lacy prepared her portfolio and applied to study at Royal College of Arts (RCA) MA programme. In 2024 she graduated from the course, followed by offers to various work opportunities and residencies.

## **Painter Mons Jorgensen** 

In November 2023, Mons’ work was selected for the fourth edition of the publication _Artists of Today and Tomorrow_ , which was presented at Spazio Europa, the offices of the European Parliament and the representation of the European Commission in Rome, Italy. 

Gallery Spazio b5 presented Mons’ paintings in a solo show at Art Athina in September 2024. For the weekend event of the fair she organised a collaboration with five local dance and theatre specialists, who translated the paintings into a moving performance using  masks created by the artist. 

Mons had a solo exhibition at Spazio b5 in Bologna in early 2024. The exhibition included participatory performances, a guide in braille for the visually

## Open Studios 

“I believe it is through encounters during Open Studios that art can be a place for imagination and play, challenging current systems of thought while also inviting newness and beauty into the different, yet equally authentic, ways we build worlds and find a sense of home or belonging. The vulnerability of opening up your working and thinking space to strangers became an entry point into deeply personal conversations about ways of being, existing, and nurturing.” 

**The bi-annual Open Studios give an opportunity for people to come and discover for themselves Kindred Studios - and their wider remit of being an Artists Community rather than simply just artists’ studios.**

## Kensington and Chelsea Women’s Club 


## **April and June 2024** 

from Kensington and Chelsea Women’s Club came to two guided studio tours, where they were able to see 12 artists’ studios and many other community artists from various disciplines. Many of the KCWC community members returned to Kindred for other events, social gatherings and to enquire about artwork to purchase. 

In 2024 Kindred formed a friendship with Kensington and Chelsea Women’s Club (KCWC) by inviting them to guided studio tours and lunches with artists. 

KCWC is an organisation that provides social and enrichment opportunities for the women residing in Kensington and Chelsea Borough. A group of 30 individuals 

## International Women’s Day Exhibition at Kindred Studios 



An exhibition titled _A Seat at My Table_ , in collaboration with Hammersmith & Fulham Council and taking place at Kindred Studios, is based on Judy Chicago’s _The Dinner Party_ (1975). 

Kindred studios invited female artists, living or working in the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, to exhibit the work. 

**Thanks to all participating female artists, we had an incredibly successful Private View with 183 visitors on the opening night!** 

This group show was put together by young curator Hanna Dhaimish. During it’s Private View (7 March, 2024) over 100 members of public attended, 

followed by 27 visitors,who came to private tours. Many visitors did not know about Kindred Studios prior to the exhibition.

## Education & Mentoring programmes 

This year Kindred Studios artists donated 60 hours per month, equivalent to 720 hours this year, of their time to students. 

## **Mentorship programme formed** 

Kindred studios started its mentorship programme by offering three students continuous professional development. The team matched the artists whose skills were most valuable with the three hand picked students. 

## **Artists provide educational opportunities to young people from the local area** 

Our Education Officer Camilla connected with just under 200 students during the two career fairs that Kindred attended. Attendees of Careers day at the Lyric for H&F Jobs of the Future event and William Morris Careers Fair were invited to register their interest in the future education and mentorship programmes. 

Student Zeynal wanted to learn filmmaking and editing skills, so he was paired with filmmaker Adam Bernet, who was not only able to teach technical aspects of his job, but also introduce and engaged the student to his creative processes. Another student Beyza, who is interested in fashion and textiles, started their professional 

relationship with wearable art designer Syban Velardi, whereas Ismail was paired with painter Kate Lowe as he was getting ready to apply to a foundation course at an arts university. Between the three students and three artists, 76 hours this year were spent in mentee-mentor meetings alone.

The Trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

Kindred Studios is a charitable company limited by guarantee and governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 6 March 2019. Kindred Studios was registered as a charity (number 1182692) with the Charity Commission on 29 March 2019. 

The board is made- up of three Trustees, including Chair and CEO. Trustees recruitment of Trustees can be nominated by any current member of the Board and can only be appointed by consensus decision. In recruiting prospective trustees, the Board’s policy is to seek a broad range of experience relevant to the work of the charity, with particular focus on the area in which it most needs help. The board’s present remit is to house the project in order to achieve stability.

Kindred Studios became a registered charity, number 1182692 on the 29[th] of March 2019 

The purpose of Kindred Studios is to advance education through the provision of high quality educational programmes designed to support young people and broaden access to the arts. 

Kindred Studios fosters a uniquely inspiring and supportive environment for a diverse community of professional artists and makers. In turn, these artists contribute to a meaningful, hands-on educational resource for young people aspiring to careers in the arts. Kindred offers vocational tours and work experiences designed to engage and inspire the next generation, encouraging them to explore future opportunities in the creative industries.

## **Achievements and Performance** 

## **A Year of Growth, Recognition, and Community Impact** 

This financial year has been extraordinary, with Kindred Studios receiving significant recognition for its impactful work in the community. 

The year began with another lease extension at our Shepherd’s Bush studios, allowing us to surpass three years at the same location—the longest period we’ve remained in one place since Kindred Studios was founded in February 2015. This stability has enabled the project to mature, deepen its roots, and reinforce the vital role that art plays in strengthening community bonds. Now, more than ever, there is a clear need for welcoming and accessible art spaces that draw the public in. 

Since opening in Shepherd’s Bush in February 2020, Kindred Studios has continued to provide affordable studio spaces for artists, sustain education programs for 14– 18-year-olds, and offer a regular home to creative groups such as The London Bulgarian Choir, Forest Drummers, and theatre companies in need of rehearsal space. We have also funded and supported independent, socially driven creative projects like _Changing Perspectives_ while continuing our partnership with Imperial Health and Headway to deliver Art Therapy and Socially prescribed workshops for a wide range of outpatients. 

By February 2024, the Kindred community was overjoyed to welcome HRH Queen Camilla, who, upon learning about the project’s impact, personally requested an official visit. The preparations were extensive, but the event itself was truly

unforgettable—lifting the spirits of our artists and reaffirming the importance of our work. 

Shortly afterward, the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham invited Kindred to host this year’s International Women’s Day exhibition. Following an open call, 17 femaleidentifying artists from the borough contributed works for _A Seat at My Table_ . The private view attracted 183 visitors, and Kindred organized two additional, wellattended guided tours to engage the community in the exhibition’s intricate and meaningful narratives. 

In August, more great news arrived: Kindred Studios was shortlisted for the Mayor’s _Reimagine London_ initiative, recognizing our innovative vision for rethinking community spaces with artists at the heart of their creation! 

With so much progress and recognition this year, Kindred Studios continues to thrive as a creative force, demonstrating the power of art to inspire, connect, and transform communities. 

## CHRONOLOGY OF MEANINGFUL EVENTS FOR 2023-24: 

## **22 NOV 2023 – Board Meeting** 

Since the end of the financial year, in January 2025,  Kindred finally agreed and signed a 15-year lease on 40,000 sq ft building in North Kensignton, thus securing a long-term home for its projects to continue on a larger scale.

## **Financial Review** 

The financial position of the charity at the year-end is set out on page 10. 

Kindred Studios raised £231,412 in 2023-24, achieving a surplus of £17,717. 

Total reserves of £221,999 are held at the year end of which £163,899 are unrestricted and £58,100 are restricted. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

The charity’s intention is to maintain adequate reserves, equal to three months’ worth of staff and operating expenses, which together with funds raised in the year will enable it to continue its programmes.

DEC 2023- Launch our new website with clearer messaging and objectives. JANUARY- Bulgarian Choir joins Kindred for weekely rehearsals. FEBRUARY 2024 - HRH Queen Camilla visit to Kindred Studios.

With the remaining lease term nearing its end, securing a long-term home for Kindred Studios is the organisation’s top priority this year. Establishing a stable base will allow the charity to strengthen relationships with local stakeholders and ensure the sustainable growth of its programs—enabling them to evolve rather than be rebuilt with each relocation. As the financial year drew to a close, very promising new opportunities emerged in this regard. It is clear that Kindred Studios is entering a growth cycle and so the structure of the Kindred Studios board will need to be reviewed to ensure it is well-positioned to support the organisation’s future needs.

**I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.** 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

**I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:**

1. **Accounting Policies** 

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** 

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. 

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the entity and is rounded to the nearest £. 

## **Going concern** 

The trustees are not aware of any material uncertainties regarding going concern. 

## **Judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty** 

Accounting estimates and assumptions are made concerning the future and, by their nature, will rarely equal the related actual outcome.  There are no key assumptions or estimates that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities in the next financial year. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees to further any of the charity’s purposes. 

Designated funds are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular future project or commitment. 

Restricted funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure declared by the donor or through the terms of an appeal. 

## **Incoming resources** 

Income from donations and grants is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probable, and its amount can be measured reliably.  All income is derived from the charity’s principal activities which relate to fundraising.

## **11. Related Party Transactions** 

There were no disclosable related party transactions during the year (2024: none) except for the following:- 

Angelique Schmitt, a trustee, received total remuneration of £55,497 (2023 £49,365) for her role as CEO of the charity.  No remuneration was paid for her role as trustee. 

## **12. Retirement benefits scheme** 

The charity operated a defined contribution pension scheme for all qualifying employees. The assets of the scheme are held separately from those of the charity in an independently administered fund.  The charge to the income and expenditure account in respect of defined contribution scheme was £2,014 (2023: £1,797) 


## **13. Controlling party** 

The charity is controlled by its Trustees in this and prior year.
