Wiverton In The Vale Parochial Church Council – Registered Charity no. 1182644

## **Trustees’ Report**

## **Administrative information**

The Parish of Wiverton in the Vale is a single parish with six parish churches which came into being under a Pastoral Scheme effective of 1 March 2017. The parish was formerly a group of six individual parishes known as the “Wiverton Group of Parishes”. It is in the Deanery of East Bingham in the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham within the Church of England. The current rector, Reverend Rachel Mitchell, was instituted on 12 November 2019. The correspondence address is: The Rectory, 2 Dobbin Close, Cropwell Bishop, Nottingham NG12 3GR.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is a registered charity (no. 1182644).

Under an agreement with the Diocesan Bishop, each church community may have up to two PCC representatives each of whom may be either a Churchwarden or elected member. This agreement is in place for a period of up to five years from the date of inception of the new parish at the discretion of the Diocesan Bishop.

## **Structure, governance and management**

The method of appointment of Church Wardens and PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. However, in view of the Pastoral Scheme referred to above, the Bishop’s agreement overrides this for the time being. All Church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC.

1

## **Objectives and Activities**

The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the six parish churches, the Chapel of Ease at Barnstone and associated property.

## **Achievements and Performance**

On revision of the electoral roll in 2019, the number on roll fell from 189 to 135, mainly due to parishioners moving away and wedding couples from outside the parish not renewing. In 2020, the number has crept up to 138.

The average weekly attendance is traditionally recorded in the month of October (which is considered nationally as a ‘typical’ month). However, due to the global pandemic, our church buildings were closed in October 2020 and indeed, for most of the year. Prior to ‘lockdown’ on 16/03/2020, in-church attendance was broadly in line with 2019 figures. During lockdown, we have provided alternative means of worship and corporate prayer through online recorded services every Sunday and weekday Zoom services for Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer (see Report on Services, etc). The average number of ‘views’ for our October recorded services was 60, which is comparable with the in-church figure for 2019 of 55 adults and 4 children.

The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our six parish churches and, particularly throughout 2020, through online platforms. In line with the Diocesan vision of Growing Disciples Wider, Younger, Deeper, the PCC maintains an overview of worship throughout the parish and makes suggestions on how our services can involve the many groups that live within our parish. At all times we seek to ensure that our services and worship put faith into practice through prayer and Scripture, music and sacrament.

When planning activities for the year, we have considered the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit and in particular, the supplementary guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. We try to enable people to live out their faith as part of the wider parish community through:

- Worship and prayer; learning about the gospel; developing their knowledge and truth in Jesus through: parish wide preaching and teaching in public worship; home groups for Bible study and fellowship across the parish; taking advantage of deanery and diocesan training events.

- Provision of pastoral care for people living in the parish through home and hospital visits, home Communion and responding to the needs of those requiring the Pastoral Offices. There were 20 funerals, 10 in church and 10 either at crematorium, cemetery or other churchyard on behalf of the church, 6 interments of ashes, 2 weddings and 2 baptisms. Funerals were conducted by Revd Rachel, Revd Clare, Revd Charlie Skrine and Katharine Bacon.

2

- Missionary and outreach work in the parish especially through local schools, toddler groups, Souperbowl, Time for You, Coffee Cake and Chat, Langar Pop-Up Café and Colston Bassett Big Breakfast (although these have been suspended during ‘lockdown’) as well as supporting, on a regular basis, UK and overseas charities namely: Church of England Children’s Society, Women’s World Day of Prayer, Water Aid, Royal British Legion, Local Schools Food Appeal.

- Maintaining and developing our church buildings to be fit for purpose.

Our ecumenical relationship with Cropwell Bishop Methodists has continued through the “Joint Churches Choir”, which met for a few socially-distanced choir practices and was able to contribute to three services. We are pleased to welcome members of other denominations who are resident in the parish (or indeed, further afield) to worship with us.

## **Secretary’s Report**

At the beginning of the year, the role of Secretary was assumed by our Parish Administrator, Anna Hemati Kang Sofla. Deb Brookes was appointed to formally assume the position on 16/11/2020 but has subsequently resigned due to health issues. In the absence of a formal secretary at the time of writing, this report is presented by the Vice-Chair of the PCC.

The PCC meets six times a year on a bi-monthly basis. Pre-lockdown, meetings were held at St Andrew’s Church and subsequently, online via the Zoom platform. Attendance has been excellent and has been quorate on every occasion. Each church community has a “Home Team” which takes responsibility for local matters not requiring PCC approval/permission. Where such permission is required, matters can be presented to the PCC via their representatives on the PCC. Each Home Team has permission to spend a limited amount annually, without prior PCC approval, to provide for uncontentious day to day expenses.

The Parish website (www.wivertoninthevale.co.uk) is actively managed and provides comprehensive and regularly-updated information about services, events and news in the parish and diocese. Subscribers (of whom there are now 147 – up from 78 last year) receive email updates whenever new material is added to the site. This service has proved indispensable in providing information and enabling worship whilst we have been unable to meet in person. All procedures regarding storage of personal data are compliant with GDPR legislation.

Our Rector (and PCC Chair) has been on long-term sick leave from 26/10/2020 and remains so to date (05/04/2021). During this period, PCC meetings and the APCM (on 28/10/2020) have been chaired by the Vice-Chair.

## **Financial Review for the year ended 31/12/2020 and further update**

In what has been a difficult time due to the Covid Pandemic restrictions, total income for the year amounted to £125,486 (Last year £168,609) against expenditure £119,443 (£155,798), in addition to which our investments accrued an unrealised gain of £14,104 (£32,319).

The Parish continues to meet 100% of the allocated parish share payment which for 2020 amounting to £66,300 (£55,164).

During the year there were no unusual major items of expenditure and outgoings were kept to a minimum due to the partial closure of our church buildings during 2020. A new PCC Administrator was appointed towards the end of 2019 which position incurred expenditure of £5859 in 2020 against £1832 in 2019.

Services ceased at Barnstone Chapel of Ease on 30 September 2017. The property is sold subject to contract, completion expected early 2021. In preparation for the sale and the continued building maintenance, costs totalling £6,915 (£3,913) have been met from General Unrestricted Funds and all associated costs since 2017 will be recovered in due course from the sale proceeds.

We are extremely grateful for the following organisations and the many local people who provided financial support:

_The Chetwode Foundation, Langar District Council, Cropwell Bishop Parish Council, Nottinghamshire Historic Churches Trust_

Church service collection income was greatly reduced following the partial building closures and lack of weddings and christenings. We still had the benefit of income from regular standing order payments and latterly the ability to accept internet payments through our web site. This enabled us to meet all outgoings when due.

## **Reserves Policy**

A level of reserves is maintained in the General Unrestricted Fund equivalent to a minimum 3 months usual expenditure. The General Unrestricted Funds at the yearend amounted to £52,538 (£58,962). The difference is due to the lack of service collections down £6,500 against 2019. Future strategy is to invest surplus balances in interest bearing accounts principally the CBF Deposit Fund.

## **Effect of Covid-19 Pandemic**

Since the end of the financial year, we have had a substantial drop in income due to the partial closure of our churches since early 2020. Whilst this continues to have a negative effect on profitability for the current trading year, overall finances remain strong and we will continue to meet our liabilities for the foreseeable future.

## **Post Balance Sheet Events**

There are no known unavoidable fees or bad debts.

## **Report on Services, Worship, Teaching and Mission**

(by Katharine Bacon, LLM, as Revd Rachel is currently on sick leave)

First of all, in Revd Rachel’s name can I thank everyone who has worked so hard to keep our services going before and during this long period of pandemic. I mean all our retired clergy, Reverends Keith, Fred and Clare, Churchwardens, Church representatives, LLM in training Sid, Dorothy and Nick, our Vice Chair. We have had two lockdowns in 2020 and it is down to everyone’s seriously hard work that we were able to have any services in church at all and to Nick’s incredibly hard work and excellent tuition in I.T. that we’ve had services online.

Up until the 16[th] of March 2020, Revd Rachel took services with the help of retired clergy, Revds Fred and Clare Connell and Keith Turner, LLM Katharine Bacon, Churchwardens Edward Hine and Maureen Wright, around our 6 churches in a pattern that reflected the pattern set up by the previous incumbent:

_An All-Parish service at St Andrew’s, Langar on the first Sunday in the month, then services at Cropwell Bishop over the following three weeks including a monthly JOY! service aimed at young families, two services a month at Langar, Tythby and Colston Bassett (except when flooding prevented on 16[th] February) and two oper month at either Granby (18/yr) or Elton (6/yr)._

All the church terriers (except Elton’s) were brought up to date as per request from the Area Dean just before all our churches were closed from 16[th] March in the first lockdown to prevent people from getting Covid19. Easter service plans were cancelled.

Revd Rachel led Zoom Morning Prayer every day at 9am for churchwardens and PCC members for the first few weeks. These later dropped to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays led by Rachel or Sid Mitchell, Hilary Tabron, Peter Hills and Katharine.

About the same time, Edward (supported by Katharine) began a Zoom Evening Prayer on Fridays at 6pm which then changed to 5pm for Colston worshippers with an average attendance of 12. Both Morning and Evening Prayer services continued through to the end of the year.

Revd Rachel and Sid led the first 10.30am ‘Pause for Prayer and Reflection’ service online on Sunday 29[th] March with Nick Perry’s help to publish on YouTube and make it accessible from the Parish website. A ‘Time for a Cuppa’ meeting on Zoom for those who had viewed the service was set up following that and people were divided into Breakout rooms so that it was possible to chat. Over the year more people led and preached as retired vicars Revds Fred, Clare and Keith and LLM Katharine and LLM-intraining Sid joined in, with members from the Parish reading and leading prayers. Dorothy played her piano and sang hymns and played a final piece and Nick added introductory music and artwork to reflect the service themes. Nick coached us with practical advice on how to record and upload the videos. He was admirably patient.

5

When it appeared that we would be able to re-open our churches, Revd Rachel instigated risk assessments for all the churches and asked the Churchwardens and Church Representatives to organise their Home Teams to remove all service books and hassocks from pews, install elbow-operated hand sanitisers and follow government guidelines in making our Parish safe for services and/or private prayer.

From the 23[rd] August, Langar and Colston churches opened for 9am services of Holy Communion, Colston being used when Langar had had a wedding or a funeral in the week before and vice versa because 72 hours needed to pass before the churches were considered Covid-free. The 10.30am recorded ‘Pause for Prayer and Reflection’ services and ‘Time for a Cuppa’ continued to be streamed. Colston Bassett, Cropwell Bishop, Granby and Langar churches opened for private prayer, weddings and funerals. Colston finished their private prayer hour on alternate Wednesdays with Compline at 4.45pm led by Edward.

Edward led a Zoom VE Day Service which was very well attended. Revd Fred led a socially distanced service for VJ Day and Remembrance Sunday outside St John’s, Colston Bassett. Revd Fred preached at the 10.30am Remembrance Sunday Service with added input from veterans and schoolchildren from Langar School organised by Revd Rachel but, sadly, Revd Rachel was on sick leave from 26[th] October, so it was led by Katharine.

Sid Mitchell was accepted as a candidate for LLM ministry and received PCC approval and backing for £150 pa costs for residential training for two years and began his training in September.

Hilary and Katharine took the All Souls Service at Langar at 4pm on 1[st] November and then the lockdown resumed.

Robin took over the organisation of ‘Time for a Cuppa’ on 8[th] November.

Hilary took over organising the rota for services.

Vivien Hall held the first Zoom JOY! service for young families at 3pm on Sunday 22[nd] November.

St Andrew’s, Langar re-opened on 6[th] December for 9am Holy Communion and the 10.30am online Service continued to be streamed. Colston followed suit the following Sunday and then Langar again. Sadly, on the 15[th] December, Dickie Bond’s funeral was held at Langar, led by his nephew, Revd Charlie Skrine.

After thoughtful planning guided by Hilary, Granby opened for Holy Communion at 6pm on Christmas Eve taken by Revd Fred. Revd Keith took a service of Holy Communion at Langar at 10am and Revds Fred and Clare took a service of Holy Communion at Colston at the same time on Christmas Day. All these services required pre-booking for places. Revd Keith recorded the online service.

6

th
The final Holy Communion service of 2020 was held at 10am on 27 December at
Cropwell Bishop, taken by Revds Fred and Clare. There was no seniice online in order
to give Nick a very short break.
Alpha Course, Pastoral Network and Langar Church of England School
Revd Rachel went into Langar School regularly before she went on sick leave and was
working well with Emily Brown, the Head.
Revd Rachel and Sid led an Alpha course with 6 people which carried onto Zoom with
lockdown. One participant would like to be confirmed. Following that, Katharine led
three of them on the Prayer Course on Zoom in October. Revd Rachel and Katharine
took home communion (the host only and given outside) to a number of people who
were shielding.
Revd Rachel asked all the Home Teams to set up volunteers to ring vulnerable people
in the villages regularly to check on their well-being.
Cropwell Bishop and Langar home groups continued to meet on Zoom. Granby halted
but two members joined the afternoon Cropwell Bishop group.
Revd Rachel had two holidays, one in August and one in October.
Plans fora Vision Day led by Victoria Ramsey had to be put on hold because of Covid19
as did all the outreach in the Parish: Cropwell Bishop's Coffee, Cake and Chat and Time
for You and outreach during their summer festival; Langar 's Pop up Café; Colston's
Big Breakfast, Quiz and Harvest Lunch; and other churches, plans.
A Christmas Appeal of food donations to families where children were receiving free
meals in the holidays initiated by Donna Beeson-Etty, a member of our congregation,
with the help of Emily Brown, Head of Langar Church of England Primary School, was
responded to with outstanding generosity by our villages. Because of the huge
response, gifts of food were able to be given to families who attended the family
centre at Bingham as well as those children receiving free meals in the holidays who
attend Langar and Cropwell Bishop schools.
May l again thank everyone for their hard work and steadiness in these very difficult
times, especially Robin who has continued working in Langar church whilst shielding.
We are all looking forward to being able to meet again under more normal conditions.
