ANNUAL REPORT (APRIL 2021 - MARCH 2022)

Aim

To promote the health, welfare and culture of Asian people within the Borough of Eastleigh.

The Charity’s Objects

To further such charitable purposes for the benefit of the Asian community in the Borough of Eastleigh, Hampshire, as the committee determines from time to time, in particular but not exclusively by:

Committee Members

The Wednesday drop-in group closed in March 2020 and came back on 23[rd] March 2022. A new AWCA committee will be formed once the group is re-established.

AWCA COMMITTEE & TRUSTEES REPORT

Grants

The AWCA received the following grants: £5000 from Hampshire County Council Local Solutions grant and £250 from Eastleigh Borough Council Community Grants. Thanks go to Helen Coleman and Caroline Wallace for dealing with all the grant applications for the AWCA. The grants supported online activities including Yoga and Bollifit and the return of the Asian Elders’ Wednesday ~~Drop InD~~ rop-In sessions.

Asian Elders’ Drop-In Sessions

The weekly Drop-In sessions were halted in early March 2020 and the situation was kept under constant review. The Drop-In sessions remained closed for the year only opening up again on March 23rd 2022 - 20 members attended this first session. The Committee was unable to meet up over the year but members have kept in touch via a fortnightly Zoom Chat, a WhatsApp support group, a WhatsApp Mela group and by telephone. A range of activities were set up ~~including weeklyi~~ ncluding weekly online Yoga and Bollifit classes. Through the Zoom Chat group members took part in a consultation with the Voluntary and Community Sector Emergency Partnership ~~( VCSEP(~~ VCSEP) on how the group operated pre pandemic and during the pandemic. Information has been shared on a regular basis over the year about Scams Webinars and the Hampshire County Council Covid 19 Community Bulletins, as well as information from Connect to Support and the OPCC. Some members took up the opportunity to be involved in community arts projects ‘Silenced Women’, Community ~~Voices readingV~~ oices reading lines from a poem about Local Heroes and the Eastleigh Museum Story Group. 4 members took part in First Aid training.

Once again members took part in One Community’s Christmas tree exhibition, theme ‘Getting Together’, which was based at Eastleigh Museum.

It has been a particularly sad year as the group has had a number of bereavements of members or their families .

Trustees Meetings

The Trustees have held 10 virtual meetings over the period.

Agencies who attended Trustees’ meetings to promote information and opportunities to the group included – Citizens Advice Bureau and the Samaritans. Systems established in the previous year, following lockdown, ensured that members were kept in touch with all information. The Trustees continued working on the process of moving AWCA’s bank account to the Charities Aid Foundation Bank

2021 AGM

Because of Coronavirus lockdown conditions the 2021 AGM was held online on ~~10/03/2022M~~ arch 10th 2022.The accounts and annual report for the previous year, April 2020 to March 2021, were submitted on time to the Charity Commission.

Cultural Events and Celebrations

~~C~~ ovid restrictions prevented the celebration of the festivals of Diwali, Vaisakhi, Eid and Christmas and holding Community Meals this year. Members started planning for a Community ~~Mme~~ al to be held in June 2022. Members also embarked on decorating bunting for the upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Mela 2021

Following a break in 2020 the annual Mela festival returned in August 2021. Although government restrictions were lifted on 19 July ~~C~~ ovid remained a feature of life and the 2021 Mela was planned with a full programme of entertainment but fewer stalls on the field to allow for social distancing. The Mela was warmly welcomed back by members of the wider community - the Mela 2021 guest of honour was Matt le Tissier, former international footballer who played locally.
