Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Exeter Local Food Centre
Our work from last year is ongoing, With funding from the Conscience Trust, Food Exeter has been exploring the feasibility of creating a ‘local food centre’. Our research has shown that there is a significant need for a better and more efficient supply of ethically-produced local food to businesses and consumers in Exeter, and to increase the production of organic and agro-ecological food. The purpose of the centre will be to reduce distribution costs and make sustainable local food more available, by acting as an aggregator of supply and demand. It will guarantee a market to local suppliers, and a regular and reliable supply of fresh local produce to retailers, individuals, catering establishments and more. Through economies of scale it will be able to achieve cost-savings and pass these on to customers whilst paying producers fairly. We are now working with a group of farmers to explore next stages.
Food in Communities and food poverty
We completed research funded by Devon County Council and Devon Community Foundation to better understand the picture of emergency food provision and community food provision in Exeter, and how groups work together. This work has gone towards food strategy in Devon, as other organisations led and participated in the research in different local areas across Devon.
