We are thrilled to share the Ordinary Hero UK (OHUK) 2023 Annual Report with you, along with a glimpse into our vision for 2024. We can’t begin without first extending our heartfelt gratitude to all who support and believe in our mission. Your unwavering commitment fuels our determination to make a lasting impact in Gulu, Uganda. 

This past year was a significant milestone in the OHUK journey. We are excited to announce the expansion of our Board of Trustees, welcoming Rebekah Ellis, Aaron Azanar, and Chris Robinson. Each of these committed individuals brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, sharing our passion, vision, goals, and values. We are confident that this Board will help direct OHUK into our next chapter, and together with our longstanding trustees, Giles and Lindsey, we are confident in our ability to continue making a meaningful impact. 

In 2023 we continued to be deeply involved in the community, investing our time and resources in projects that created lasting impact. Our focus is on initiatives that bring about meaningful, widespread change. Our primary objective is to relieve some of the everyday stresses associated with hardship and enhance overall wellbeing through avenues such as education, food security, lifeskills training, and recreational activities. 

This past year saw many amazing wins, stand-in-the-gap moments, and long-term commitments to those we now consider to be a part of our extended family. Our community-centric approach has led us to establish programs that seamlessly integrate into people's everyday lives. 

We are proud to be inclusive and unique, investing in projects that go beyond conventional boundaries. Our strategy involves working alongside community members and leaders who possess invaluable insights into the true needs of the region, guiding us in implementing the most effective programs. 

It has been a gratifying year of increased acceptance and recognition, fostering a sense of belonging that has inspired us to establish firmer connections here. Our 2023 was a journey of beautiful highs, tragic lows, amazing successes and some big failures as well as everything in between. But in everything we do, we reflect, learn, refine, enhance, improve, and keep on repeating that process over and over again. 

This Annual Report isn’t just a record of what OHUK has done, but what has been made possible through your support. Thank you for continuing to stand with us, we could not do this without you. You are all heroes,

where we work: UGANDA 

Uganda is a landlocked country. It is bordered by South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. OHUK operate in and around Gulu, a district in North-Western Uganda with a population of around 186,000. 




Uganda’s population of 48.5 million increases by about 3% each year, with 71% of people living in rural areas. 

Life expectancy is approximately 64 years, with only 2% of the population older than 65. 

Uganda has one of the world’s youngest median ages at 16.3 years - about 45% of the population is under 14, which places great pressure on the demand for education. 




60% of people in Gulu live in financial hardship. 

1 in 3 children do not complete primary school. 

4 in 5 girls who enrol in primary school do not progress to high school. 

Challenges like financial hardship, limited healthcare access, and infrastructure issues exist in Gulu and nearby areas. Despite this, the resilience of the people and support from government and NGOs are driving positive change and development in the region.

## a note from the trustees: 

As with numerous small non-profit organisations, Craig and Janine serve as the founders, volunteers, and primary fundraisers for our charity. Over the past five years, they have demonstrated unwavering dedication to the cause, committing themselves to continual upskilling and professional development. This journey has been characterised by learning the intricacies of fundraising, navigating registration processes, crafting a clear vision for the organisation, and investing countless hours in on-the-ground efforts, from managing building projects to handling behind-the-scenes administrative tasks. 

We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to their tireless efforts and the support of our generous donors, we were able to welcome our first Ugandan part-time staff members in 2023. This milestone marks a significant step forward for OHUK, allowing us to expand our capacity and reach while continuing to serve the community with passion and dedication. Craig and Janine's leadership and commitment have laid a strong foundation for growth and success, and we look forward to building upon this momentum in the years to come.

## MEET AMOS 


Amos is a familiar presence and trusted ally in our organisation for more than six years. Great people are critical to any growth, culture and fabric. Amos has been a key figure overseeing the well-being of Little Heroes during the challenges of lockdown and the pandemic years. In acknowledgment of his exceptional contributions, Amos has now assumed the formal role of Field Manager. “I’m passionate about OHUK because they care for humans and love people around them.” -Amos 

## MEET RONALD 

Ronald's exceptional dedication and countless volunteer hours spent working alongside us with the children over the past year have not gone unnoticed. Therefore, it was a natural decision to extend a formal offer to him for the role of Programme Manager. In this capacity, Ronald will be responsible for supervising our weekly projects, including Skateboarding, Fun Clinics, and Book Clubs. As a highly respected and influential figure in the community, Ronald's leadership will undoubtedly enhance our programs to positively impact the lives of those we serve. “OH cherishes others something I love to do too. Being with the kids is fun, OH a makes them feel happy and I love having time with the kids.” -Ronald 





## Fostering Community Empowerment: Ready, Stead, BAKE! 

Another successful year has passed for the Bakery Outreach, where our primary objective remains steadfast: to provide swift, income-generating, sustainable rural livelihoods that reduce rates of hardship whilst contributing to community strengthening. Our inclusive project is meticulously designed to bring about an immediate improvement in the quality of life, proven to strengthen communities by changing attitudes and promoting opportunities for all. The programme has garnered high demand, reflecting its relevance and impact. 

Collaborating with a dedicated local team of community leaders, alongside a committed local group of highly skilled bakers, we have crafted a unique and innovative 5-day workshop aimed at imparting practical baking skills along with vital small business training. 

This free teaching offers practical, hands on cooking and baking skills along with providing basic business and financial management training for small businesses to poor families and individuals who incessantly struggle to acquire sufficient resources to meet their needs. This holistic approach encompasses a practical understanding of consumer packaging, hygiene practices, and efficient business management, charting a clear path for participants to establish and sustain their cottage enterprises. Our model means we expect a strong relationship to continue, with our students benefiting from the training through an annual timeline of continued mentoring and support. With these new skills and knowledge, participants will thrive, benefiting both themselves and the local economy. The ability to sell baked goods at the roadside and to local shops represents a tangible and sustainable way for these aspiring small business owners to change their lives and improve their families' circumstances. 

Doreen told OHUK “It’s amazing to be a part of this project. The whole village joins in to prepare and then we maneuverer out to sell. Every day we come back having sold all our baked goods. This programme is life-changing.” 

Doreen's story serves as a testament to the program's efficacy, as she attests to the life-changing impact it has had on her and her family. Her ability to generate a consistent profit from selling not only provides financial stability but also enables her to fulfil her responsibilities as a provider and caregiver, including sending her son to school. (School is not free for anyone in Uganda). 

Richard, a participant turned facilitator, attended one of our outreach sessions and excelled to the extent that he now leads these impactful sessions. We aspire to extend our reach and run more sessions. With a modest investment of just £300 we can deliver this transformative experience. Your support can help us continue making a tangible, positive difference in communities, one session at a time. Join us in this journey of empowerment and sustainable change. 





## Little Heroes: MEET JOAN & EUNICE! 

Joan lives with her guardian angel, Eunice. Joan is 17 years old and in Senior 3 in high school studying O’levels. 

Eunice said “I would see Joan walk by to collect water, she would smile at me and I wondered, why is this girl not in school? The next time I saw her I asked her, ‘why are you not in school?’ She told me her Mother had no money to afford to send her to school. So, I decided to sacrifice some of my small salary to assist with her school fees. That was back in 2020.’ 

Craig and Janine met Joan when she was singing at a school event we attending and they were captivated. Asking the bursar about her story they found out about the sacrifice of Eunice who was also working in a small MTN booth to earn extra money for her own studies and decided Joan would be perfect for a school scholarship with OHUK. 

Joan said “I cannot thank Eunice enough for loving me, seeing me and giving me the opportunity to go to school. I never believed that would happen to me and I never believed I would be able to attend Senior school. Thank you to Mama Janine and Uncle Craig for giving me this opportunity. When I grow up, I would like to do the same for many other young girls in need.” 

We believe that every single child who has the chance to go to school will have the chance to change the course of their life and the future of their communities.

## Girls in School in Uganda 

There are many barriers to girls attending school in Uganda, from gender inequality to financial and health related barriers. 

Only 24.9% of girls complete lower secondary school. Sadly, those who are unable to attend school are at a higher risk of teen pregnancy, forced child marriage, domestic servitude and even human trafficking. 

By supporting scholarships through OHUK, you help give a girl a future and a hope. 




## Let's Grow Healthy: SCHOOL LUNCH CLUB!

The Ordinary Heroes lunch program commenced in 2022. After seeing how many children were not eating throughout the school day, OHUK fundraised and implemented this much needed program, catering for the needs of our scholarship kids by providing a nutritious meal to sustain them throughout the school day. 

Most of these kids wake at 5am to walk to school, which starts at 7am and finishes at 5pm. Many children do this day in and day out, not eating until dinner time late in the evening. That’s where the School Lunch Club comes in. 

It is paramount that these children receive nourishment to stay alert and derive the utmost benefit from their education. A typical meal includes a large helping of rice, beans, and a vegetable (typically avocado, pumpkin or greens). 

As we reflect on the year 2023, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable support that has enabled us to maintain this vital program. In just one year, OHUK provided around 3000 school lunches to 21 children. 

## The Beautiful Ripple Effect. 

Meet Betty (pictured right)! Betty’s kitchen is opposite the school our sponsorship children are attending. OHUK pays Betty to make the school lunches every day.  She recently told us “because of the business you have given me, I am now able to pay for my own children to attend school”. This ripple effect always warms our hearts. 

As we look ahead to 2024, our vision extends beyond merely sustaining the existing program. There are thousands of children in our district who are learning the whole day without eating a meal. We aspire to broaden our scope of impact by reaching out to even more children who find themselves in similar circumstances, lacking access to a regular school meal. 

Through the expansion of this program, we aim to provide vital nourishment to at least 50 children who would otherwise go without, thereby empowering them to thrive academically and beyond.

We invite you to join us to support the School Lunch Club. A healthy, sustaining lunch costs less than £1 a day - in fact, one cup of coffee can ensure a child in our community eats lunch for a week! 





## Bricks & Mortar: A FOREVER HOME FOR “B” 

Naturally, our year would not be complete without making yet another long-term, bricks-and-mortar contribution to our community; this year in the form of a forever home. In the first quarter of 2023, a significant milestone marked our commitment to positive change as we acquired land to construct a forever home for B and her cherished family. This dwelling is not just a house; it is a sanctuary that will bestow lasting blessings upon them. The profound impact of this experience resonates not only with B's family but with us as an organisation, enriching our purpose in ways that will endure indefinitely. 

B is a single Mum with four children with a story too sad to share. Despite facing tough times she stays strong. Over the years we have loved this family it became evident that for true transformation and to create self sustainability, B and her family needed a stable and secure place to call home. That's why we embarked on a mission to build B a permanent home—a place where she and her children could finally put down roots, grow food, and achieve self-sufficiency. 

Guided by Craig's construction expertise, a local team embarked on a transformative building project. Initially building a 2 bedroom home, then expanding to include a functional outdoor kitchen space, vibrant painting, thoughtful produce planting, and the incorporation of a new shower area, we meticulously curated a space that now stands as a wonderful homestead. We invite you to visit and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this homestead, a testament to the power of collective effort and compassion. 

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this dream a reality. Your support has played an integral role in creating a haven that will be cherished for generations to come. 

Looking ahead, 2024 will mark the conclusion of this remarkable project, with a focus on rendering and painting the exterior. As we add the final touches, we anticipate the completion of a home that not only shelters a family but also embodies the spirit of compassion and resilience. Thank you for being a part of this transformative journey, as together we build a foundation for a brighter and more hopeful future. 




## Let's Play: RECREATION CLUBS! 

We believe recreational activities reduce stress and anxiety, and in Gulu Uganda where so much hardship is apparent, recreational opportunities for children are scarce. 

Our Skateboarding Outreach continues to THRIVE! We continue to run our program every Thursday afternoon at the local skatepark, providing 30 boards, free to use to around 100 children. We’ve been so blessed to see these children learn and grow through play and exercise. 

Over the past few years, our fitness family home has transformed into the Gulu Boxing Club, inspired by Craig's deep-rooted love for boxing and his amateur boxing days. This club stands out as the sole boxing club in the Northern Region officially recognized by the Ugandan Boxing Federation. 

Serving as a beacon of hope, the club not only nurtures potential champions but also functions as a community focal point. Coach Dennis, a dedicated and prayerful mentor, generously offers his time, care, and unwavering belief to the young individuals under his wing. Operating on a probono basis, the club provides a haven for local youth who lack financial resources. Despite financial challenges in the area and ongoing struggles to cover rent, the Gulu Boxing Club remains open to all, serving as a positive influence to channel youngsters' energy constructively. 

Coaches and senior boxers provide mentorship, rigorous training, discipline, and commitment, serving as rare positive role models. Resources are scarce, with the club depending on shared equipment like bags, gloves, pads, and the only speedball in Gulu, acquired through OHUK fundraising in 2022. 

One of our senior boxer recently represented Uganda in the African Boxing Championships, winning a bronze medal! His journey stands as a symbol of hope, demonstrating that success is achievable against all odds. There are so many more young boxers who deserve this same chance! The club aspires to acquire more equipment, particularly a boxing ring. With a proper ring, amateur bouts can pave the way for potential tournaments and inter-community matches, offering more chances for youth and community involvement. 

These children, bonded by shared social and economic challenges, find comfort and development in this nurturing setting. We cherish this place, and if you pay a visit, bring your workout gear to join us! The boxing club extends its gratitude to Hunslet Boxing Club for their consistent support with boxing equipment. 




## Let's Learn: BUILDING A HUMBLE SCHOOL 

2023 saw the humble beginnings of planning to build a nursery school in Koc Lii - a small community to the south of Gulu. The agrarian based community is home to around 300 family households, however, the nearest nursery school is over 10km away. Because such young children are unable to walk the distance, there is little to no access to education for nursery aged students. 

As you can imagine, this impacts greatly on their educational progress. Delaying their start to schooling means that children miss out on vital educational milestones, and their lives are literally put on hold until their little legs can carry them there and back each day. This, sadly, is not uncommon in Uganda, and the effects of this are being seen in some students not graduating school until they are well into their adult lives. 

Constructing a school here in Uganda is a multifaceted endeavour, guided by numerous regulations and standards, offering both challenges and excitement. But, Craig is no stranger to regulations. He’s been building here since 2011 with remarkable achievements. 

Our hearts are filled with determination and hope for the bright future of the children in the community. Together with the community and local leaders, we are paving the way for a brighter future, where education, and children, can flourish. 

As we embrace the journey ahead, let us remember that every brick laid and every lesson taught under the roof of the nursery school will be a testament to the power of unity, education, and the unwavering spirit of hope.  Will you join us to build a foundation for a better tomorrow? 

When we began conversations with community leaders, we found out that they were already considering starting a nursery school under the mango tree (a common and informal form of education in rural Uganda). So, we began working together with the community and their leaders in mid 2023 to find out how we could build a nursery school for their precious children. 

Our first victory was in securing the land for these potential young learners. As we step into 2024, we start with the practicalities of drilling of a bore hole to provide the school and surrounding communities with fresh water, fostering a sense of unity and support among all. We have also begun clearing the land ready to break ground at the site of the new nursery school!

SUPER HERO! She doesn't wear a cape, but she is a super hero to us. We met Feddy in 2018 when she was just 15 years old. Her story absolutely broke our hearts. We are so excited to have celebrated her 20th birthday with her in 2023 (of course we had cake!). When YOU say yes, WE get to work behind the scenes loving and standing in the gap. Feddy's life is flourishing thanks to you saying YES. Special thanks to Craig’s eldest brother for travelling year in, year out to volunteer here, build gorgeous relationships and transform lives - this one in particular. 

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  Sweet, magical moments of joy when Birthdays comes around. All our little heroes look forward to their birthday. A birthday cake to share with friends, a lucky dip in the birthday bag gathering around and serenade the birthday star with a chorus of off key yet heartfelt renditions of ‘Happy birthday’ And when the moment is captured in a photo—like the one of Gerard, grinning from ear to ear—it becomes a timeless snapshot of pure joy, destined to be cherished for years to come. So here's to birthdays, where every moment is a magical memory in the making! m a g i c a l m o m e n t s 

A LICK OF PAINT! In our ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of care and comfort for our community, we embarked on a small refurbishment project at the medical centre aimed at brightening up the interior space to include a fresh coat of paint to promote a clean, welcoming environment conducive to providing exceptional patient care. 

BODA BODA! In Uganda, there are approximately 1 million boda bodas (motorcycle taxis), with a significant concentration in Gulu. These vehicles play a crucial role in transporting both people and goods, acting as a vital link in the local supply chain. A typical short ride from one end of town to the other costs around 1000 Ugandan shillings (about 20p), necessitating the drivers to work diligently every day to make a living. 

When Amos's boda was stolen, it was a devastating blow as it took away his source of income and his ability to provide for his family, especially after working for five years to pay off the bike loan. Thanks to your support, we managed to replace his boda boda within two weeks, free from debt, allowing him to get back on the road and continue earning a living. Amazing!

## SO, WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? 

In 2024 we want to focus on nurturing and enhancing our existing projects, while also intensifying our fundraising efforts, particularly for the Bakery Outreach initiative. 

With just £300, we can facilitate an entire workshop. 

We are kicking off Phase 1 of the school construction project, which includes establishing a fully-equipped kitchen and sanitary facilities, and enclosing the area with chain link fencing to ensure safety. 

Moreover, we aim to enrol the first cohort of children. 

We are also actively seeking a more permanent headquarters for our field office and team, recognising the importance of a stable operational base for efficient project management and community engagement. Furthermore, we aspire to expand our team by welcoming another dedicated staff member, whose expertise will further bolster our impact and outreach efforts.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** 

For the year ended 31/12/2023 the charity income was £45,309 and spending was £45,350 resulting in an income over expenditure deficit of £41. However the charity had brought forward funds and as at 31/12/2023 reserve carried forward to 2024 was £8,387 which will enable the charity to continue its operations. 

For Another Human is committed to maintaining financial stability to ensure the continuity of its charitable activities while meeting unforeseen challenges. The Reserves Policy aims to secure a minimum of £4,000 in unrestricted reserves, representing three months core costs (including overheads, marketing, bank charges and accountancy) within its budget. 

The trustees appreciate the reserves are unusually low. This is because the charity does not have any assets, fixed salaries, or ongoing project cost commitments. If revenue falls, the charity can continue to operate, but would have reduced support.

The charity trustees are responsible for preparing a trustees' annual report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the applicable Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations, and the provisions of the Trust deed. The Trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

As the charity's trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). 

I report in respect of my examination of the charity's financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

- the accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or 

- the financial statements do not accord with those records; or 

- the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of financial statements set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the financial statements give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

- 1 **Accounting policies** 

## **Basis of preparation** 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic if Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2014 and the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011. 

## **Change in basis of accounting or to previous accounts** 

There has been change to the accounting policies Operational Costs were broken down into more detail to give a more clear view of the spending since last year and no changes have been made to accounts for previous years. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds These are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the charity. Designated funds These are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes. Restricted funds These are available for use subject to restrictions imposed by the donor or through terms of an appeal. 

## **Income** 

Recognition of Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity income becomes entitled to, and virtually certain to receive, the income and the amount of the income can be measured with sufficient reliability. Income with related Where income has related expenditure the income and related expenditure is expenditure reported gross in the SoFA. Donations and Voluntary income received by way of grants, donations and gifts is included in the legacies the SoFA when receivable and only when the Charity has unconditional entitlement to the income. Tax reclaims on Income from tax reclaims is included in the SoFA at the time of receipt of the tax donations and gifts reclaims. Volunteer help The value of any volunteer help received is not included in the accounts.

## **Expenditure** 

- Recognition of Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis. Expenditure includes any VAT which expenditure cannot be fully recovered, and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates. 

- Expenditure on These comprise the costs associated with attracting voluntary income, fundraising raising funds trading costs and investment management costs. Expenditure on These comprise the costs incurred by the Charity in the delivery of its activities and charitable activities services in the furtherance of its objects, including the making of grants and governance costs. 

- Governance costs These include those costs associated with meeting the constitutional and statutory requirements of the Charity, including any audit/independent examination fees, costs linked to the strategic management of the Charity, together with a share of other administration costs. 

- Other expenditure These are support costs not allocated to a particular activity. 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Trade and other creditors** 

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.
