## Welcome to the 2024 Annual Report
This report covers the period from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of the public and accumulated funds from previous years, we have continued to support UK rescues caring for older sighthounds.
These grants ensure dogs aged eight and above receive vital veterinary treatment, food and supplements helping rescues provide comfort and dignity in their later years.
However, 2024 has been a challenging year for pet welfare across the UK. The cost-of-living crisis has placed enormous strain on pet owners and rescue organisations alike:
- Veterinary fees rose by around 10% for consultations and preventative care in 2024, with some treatments increasing by nearly 48% since 2020.[1]
- Pet food prices continued to climb, with a 0.7% monthly rise in mid-2024 and long-term increases since 2019.[2]
- Abandonment rates soared: The RSPCA reported 24,270 incidents of abandoned animals in England and Wales by October 2024, up from 19,727 the previous year—a 23% increase linked directly to financial hardship.[3]
- Surveys show 78% of UK pet owners believe the cost-of-living crisis negatively affects pet welfare, and 24% admit it impacts how they care for their pets.[4]
These figures underline why our work matters. Older sighthounds are among the most vulnerable, and without timely intervention, many would endure neglect, abandonment, or even euthanasia, often simply because essential veterinary care is out of reach financially.

## Our Objectives, Mission & Vision
Our key objective as set out in our CIO constitution is to “Relieve the suffering of elderly lurchers and sighthounds in need of care and attention and to provide grants (donations) to maintain rescues and other facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals”.
## **Our Mission**
We are dedicated to raising funds to provide financial support, through grants, to UK rescues that care for senior sighthounds (aged eight and over) who have been neglected, abandoned, or unwanted. In addition, we strive to actively promote the value of these dogs and encourage fostering and adoption as a vital part of giving them a second chance.
## **Our Vision**
A future where every senior sighthound receives compassionate care, medical treatment, and a safe environment in rescue homes or foster care.
## 2024 Highlights
Our objective and the reason for the charity is to provide grants to older sighthounds in rescue. Grants are allocated according to our funding procedure and as in previous years all grants have been given to dogs in UK rescues for veterinary treatment or food to aid nutrition.
During this financial period, we awarded £2,970 worth of grants. This amount is less than last year but higher than previous years.

Here are a few case studies of dogs that we have helped this year, sadly these dogs and their circumstances are not unique.
- _Alma the Greyhound was admitted to a rescue as a welfare case, she had been living in a stable with only hay and straw to lie on, she had limited human interaction and was being fed on a very poor diet which consisted of a bowl of cornflakes for her breakfast. Alma had also spent the last 3 years unable to walk on an injured leg. The vet discovered this was due to a ruptured Achilles tendon and because movement was painful for Alma, she had also developed pressure sores that required treatment. The cost to treat the tendon was going to be around £4000. The good news, however, is that Alma had the surgery and is now pain free and living a comfortable life in her new home._
_Miss Maggie’s Supper Box made a grant of £150 towards her care._
- Ali a 9 year old Lurcher was given a rescue place after the death of his owner, when he arrived, he was found to need urgent dental care, and he was very underweight. Ali had to have a total of 38 teeth removed and was found to have several abscesses (not surprising he was underweight eating must have been very painful for him).

- Niko was rescued from the dog pound where if he had not been claimed or rescued his days would have sadly ended. Aged between 8 and 9 he was in a very poor state with a very low body score and diarrhea. He was taken to the vets by the rescue where he was immediately placed on a drip.

These are just 3 cases out of the 29 dogs we have helped. Table 1 shows the rescues and number of dogs helped per rescue this financial year. Although our grant giving is less this year, we have been able to reach out and help more rescues than previous years.

The accompanying Pie Chart (page 6) illustrates how Miss Maggie’s Supper Box allocated its funding in 2024 across key areas of support for senior sighthounds.
The largest proportion of spending in line with all previous years was dedicated to dentals (£1,150), reflecting the high demand for dental care among older dogs. Emergency care (£600) and general care for neglect (£400) also represented significant portions of the budget, ensuring urgent and ongoing needs were met. Other categories included nutrition (£395), Orthopedic surgery (£150), Ophthalmology (£120), lumpectomy (£100), and joint supplements (£55).
This distribution demonstrates the charity’s commitment to addressing a wide range of health and welfare needs for vulnerable dogs in rescue.

## Financial Overview
As a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with receipts under £25,000, Miss Maggie’s Supper Box has submitted accounts separately using the Receipts and Payments Accounts Pack (CC16).
The Charity has no liabilities, and the only asset held is cash raised through donations and fundraising.

Both receipts and expenditure declined compared to the previous financial year. However the charity enters the upcoming year with reserves of £5,023, ensuring a strong financial position.
## Looking Ahead
Next year we would like to:
1. Increase our grant giving.
2. Reach out to more rescues
3. Maintain or better still increase our donations/fundraising although we appreciate that this will be difficult as financial pressures increase.
4. Review the cost versus benefit of the website
5. Continue to actively promote older sighthounds looking for homes
