## **Homes for Hounds Trustees Report for the year ended 31st August 2021**

## **Governance**

The Board of Trustees ('the Board') comprises six people.

Recruitment to the board takes place periodically as needed, and anyone from the local community may apply for these roles. During this period, the roles have been undertaken by long-term supporters of the charity.

In selecting individuals for appointment as charity trustees, the current trustees have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of Homes for Hounds. We also invite applications for new board members through our networking, events and regular newsletter. Anyone wishing to be considered for election to the Board are able to approach a trustee during the year for a discussion of the roles and responsibilities of a trustee. Following this discussion, they may be introduced to the Board and then formally appointed to the role. A full briefing is given about the roles and responsibilities when a trustee is first appointed. Ongoing training is given as and when required.

The trustees are responsible for all operational decisions taken by the charity, including allocation of resources in pursuit of its charitable objectives.

## **Charities and Public Benefit**

The trustees of Homes for Hounds have read the guidance issued by the Charity Commission for England and Wales on 'Charities and Public Benefit'.

The object of Homes for Hounds is:

- For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering of dogs in need of care and attention and, in particular, to provide and maintain rescue homes or other facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals.

The trustees confirm that the objects of the charity fully comply with this guidance and further information is set out below.

## **Objectives and Activities**

## **Summary of the purposes of the charity**

We rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs from across the UK and abroad from a life of abuse and neglect or under threat of death. We are committed to ensuring that the rescue and rehoming of sight hounds is a significant part of our work. We have a policy of non-destruction, unless to prevent incurable suffering. Our dogs remain with us for however long it takes to find them the right home.

## **Homes for Hounds Trustees Report (continued) for the period 12th March 2019 to 31st August 2020**

## **Summary of the main activities of the charity**

During this 12 month period, the charity has built upon the changes that were started in the last reporting period. From August 2020, the charity reduced the level of its activity following the closure of the kennels, but has continued to pursue its core objectives and activities as set out in the Homes for Hounds constitution.

To achieve this, the charity commenced work to build a network of foster homes to support our objective of rescuing, re-habilitating and re-homing dogs. We have made some progress with this aim, but the covid-19 pandemic impacted our ability to successfully build this network.

The trustees met regularly to monitor progress and to plan events and fundraising throughout the year.

Our usual fundraising activities continued to be seriously curtailed by the restrictions imposed due to the covid-19 pandemic. Fortunately, our loyal supporters and owners have been very generous in their ongoing financial support.

We continued to run and plan our events calendar (aimed at ensuring a range of fundraising activities are held throughout the year to help fund the running of the charity), but covid-19 issues caused several of our key events to be cancelled for the reporting period.

Cancelled events included:-

- The annual outdoor fun dog show

- The annual Courteenhall dog walk and picnic

- Two quiz evenings

- The annual Christmas fair

- Production of the Homes for Hounds 2021 calendar.

However, we were able to progress:

- A Christmas raffle

- Ongoing sponsorship programme

- Our quarterly newsletter

Homes for Hounds still needs to generate the funds for any dogs in its care, to support those being fostered and to be there for any of its dogs who, for whatever reason, need to move on from their forever home.

Our board of trustees has continued to focus on fundraising and promotion of the charity.

## **Homes for Hounds Trustees Report (continued) for the period 12th March 2019 to 31st August 2020**

## **Achievements and Performance**

During this period,

- 8 dogs were successfully adopted

- 2 dogs were placed into permanent foster placements so that the charity can continue to proved support with ongoing health issues.

- We provided support to people who had rehomed dogs through Homes for Hounds who were experiencing financial hardship due to the covid-19 pandemic.

- We also made financial donations to other charities whose objectives and activities align with those of Homes for Hounds:-

   - Sadie's Stray Dog Rescue £2,000 F Brown £250

Limerick Animal Welfare £200 Rottweiler Rescue Trust £500 Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescue £250

Candy Cane Greyhound Rescue £1,000 Rottie Welfare £200

Northern Greyhound Rescue £200 Greyhounds and Golden Oldies £1,200 Love Underdogs £250

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees' report above.

Signed on behalf of the charity's trustees Amanda Dale Chair, Homes for Hounds 31/03/2022

## **Independent examiner's statement**

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Acccounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
