The trustees present their annual report and financial statements of
Monk Fryston and Hillam Community Association ('Ihe Charity") for
the year ended 31 March 2024.
Objectlves and activities
Objectlves and alm$
The objeclive of the Charity is the provision and maintenance of a Community Centre
and Playground for the use of residents of Monk Fryston and Hillam and the
neighbourhood.
Publ1¢ bgneffit
The charity was established for the provi8ion and maintenance of a Community Centre
and Playground for the use of re8Idents of Monk Fryston and Hillam and the
neighbourhood.
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirement8 of section 4 of the
Charili8$ Act 2011 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the
Charily Commissloners for England and Wales.
Achlevemonts and performance
l am pleas8d to report that the centre is now in use every evening ofthe week and most
weekends, with almost all of our users running at full Strength post pandemic. It Is gr8at
lo see the centre In such high demand and that 18 testament to th8 quality of the facility
that we have created and malntaln a8 8 communlty.
We were thankfully able to run a near full calendar of events during ihe year. Whi18t the
events wer8 su¢¢e8sful, in that a good time wa8 had by all, a combination of changed
habit$ and the squeèze on people's pockets meant thal they didn't generate income for
the charity thal we achieved In pre pandemi¢ years but we continue to evolve the events
to make them appeal to as many p80ple a8 possible.
We made good progress through our Ilsl of development projects that was created wlth
community input in January 2022 but partly as a result of the difficully in getting
contractors to do the jobs, some are still oulstanding and as a result we are still carrylng
the reserves to complete Ihese prole¢t8.
Capital spend during the y88r included..
Installation of an Air Source Heat Pump
Installation of a second battery connected to the PV System
Replacement of blinds throughout the cenlre
Replacement of emergency exit doors with new better insulated and 88cure
aluminium door$
Additional outdoor seating
Remaining 'big ticket, items include projects such as building an Entrance Foyer to the
Centre, adding a canopy to its south side, optimising storage Opportunities both wlthln
and in the Community Centre grounds. Some ofthese items have either now been done
or actively being worked on, such as liaising with the parish council to improve the
Playground facilities.

The Community Assoclation continued to act as the lead organisation of a village wide
project to make all the community buildings within the villagès carbon neutral. The
sustainability work undertaken in 2021 and eady 22, has helped us mitigate the worst of
the current energy cri8is and cost increases. It also helped us obtain a 2 -year granl
from the Lollery Fund to lead a Villag8 wide Comrnunity Engagement and capital
enhancement program at the Community Cenlre. During the year we replaced our Gas
8oi18rwith an Airsource Heat Pump, installed a Second battery to allow us to store more
of th8 energy we generate and additional Energy Efficiency work was also undertaken.
As a result we are now energy self sufficient for half of the year and have removed the
use of polluting gas completely.
Flnan¢lal
The second year sinc8 covld restrictions were lifted meant that we have now had 18
months of fundraising events, raislng a surplus of £11,22412023'. £9,040} for the year.
Our rental income, from both regular and casual user8, has ￿rna1ned broadly slatlc at
£20,18412023.' £19,728) of Incom8 for the year. In the face of rising cost$ for our users
elsewhère we have taken the decision to not increase our renlal charges for another
year. This has been possible, In large part, to the energy efficiency and carbon neulral
projects that we have carrted out to dale and that have largely offset the increased utility
prlces.
In January 2022 we held a publlc development meetlng for the community lo come
tog8ther and brainstom and priorit188 their developm8nt suggestions for the centre and
playground. As expect8d, glven the reduced level of development durfng the Covid
pariod, Ihls generated a long list which we are now working through. As a result, m08t
of the 8urplu8 re8erve8 at the year-end have been 88miarked for v8rlous projects.
Evants of the year
l am very pleased to report thal use of the Community Centre, Playground and other
facilities 18 very good. We have played an active part in holdlng a village Coronation
event to mark the a8cendanc8 to the throne of Hi8 Majesty King Charles Ill., with the
school PTA we held the 10th village Bèer Fe8t and held a very popular Vlllage Firework
everrt wlth our partners the Cncket and Football Club.
The Summer Proms In the Parkwas, however, cancelled al the lasl minutè due to stomi
wamings whlch brought heavy rain and lightning storms to the area and so would have
made the event unsafe to run.
Unfortunately, as stated earlier, we are struggling to obtain contractors to undertake
some of the development work w8 wish to do but also suffering some delays because
we have 'lost' several active committee members for a variety of reasons.
I wish to thank the Community Association Trustees, Members, Professional Advisors,
Friends of Ihe Association, the Parish Councillors of Hillam and Monk Fryston and the
officers ofthe Association and anyone who helped out at an evenl for their activ8 SUPPOrt
during the past year.
