Governing Document

The King’s Village Ghana is governed by a Model Trust Deed dated 19 December 2018.

Objectives of the Charity

The objectives of The King’s Village Ghana are for the benefit of the public:

(a) The advancement of Christian education and education generally for the benefit of children and young people disadvantaged or marginalised by reason of economic, geographic or social circumstance in Northern Ghana by (but not limited to) the provision of schools.
(b) The promotion of the physical and mental health and welfare, and the protection of lives for the benefit of anybody disadvantaged or marginalised by reason of economic, geographic or social circumstance in Northern Ghana by (but not limited to) the provision of:
i. a medical centre with maternity block
ii. a nutrition centre
iii. clean water and sanitation projects through education, provision of bore holes, filtration facilities and extending pipeline systems
(c) The promotion of the Christian faith for the benefit of local communities in Northern Ghana by (but not limited to) the provision of religious material and the resourcing of evangelistic projects.
(d) The prevention or relief of poverty in Northern Ghana by providing grants, items and services to individuals and/or charities working to prevent or relieve poverty.

Scope

The King’s Village UK Charity exists to raise funds from supporters and send regular donations to our partner Ghanaian NGO The King's Village in Ghana.

All donations are aligned to our charitable objectives. The vast majority of the grants made to The King's Village are for specific projects e.g. education - child sponsorship, maternity block construction, nutrition centre resources etc. In addition, a small proportion of grants will be made to individuals to reimburse travelling expenses to Ghana when they bring expertise to the project from outside the country.

All of the projects supported will be for the public benefit. This is monitored by quarterly reporting from the Ghanaian NGO and annual inspection visits from the UK Trustees or delegated individuals.

Activities and Achievements

2022 has thankfully been a year of activity, success and development against a backdrop of Ghanaian (and global) economic challenge. Inflation has increased from 12% to 50% this year. The British Pound to Ghana cedi exchange rate also experienced dramatic fluctuation. We know this economic pressure impacts those living in poverty the most and we exist to serve and offer essential services to the region of Northern Ghana.

The King’s School & The King’s Tehillah School

It was a delight for The King’s Village NGO to be able to run a full academic year, not blighted by Covid. We are currently educating 600 children at our two school sites. The literacy rates in Northern Ghana are the lowest in the country and we are playing our part to change that. Many of the pupils come from families of subsistence farmers and their income levels are incredibly low which leaves then vulnerable to years of a failed harvest. By providing an education the wonderful

students will get further study and job opportunities that will help them escape a multi-generational poverty trap. £15/month provides an education and transforms a child’s life. The schools help girls stay in education longer which protects them from child labour or early marriage and therefore dramatically improves their equality of opportunity. The UK charity runs the secure Child Sponsorship program.

2022 saw the opening of a much improved computer classroom. The school now has 15 new PC’s that can be used to bring the computer science syllabus to life. It is very rare to have this level of technology in a rural school, but computer skills are essential for the pupils.

2022 also saw us start a youth leadership program which teaches leadership, entrepreneurial skills, learning musical instruments and teaching children.

Maternity Centre Building

The King’s Village Ghana NGO is building a Maternity Centre, connected to their existing hospital to tackle mother and child birth mortality rates in their region of rural Northern Ghana. A restricted fund has been set-up for supporters and this money is transferred to Ghana as the building work continues. 2022 has been a dramatic year for our maternity services. An incredible amount of building work and project management has taken place over the past year. Plus, many babies have already been born in the partially-opened facility. Building and opening the Maternity Block has been a gigantic task and we are in the final straight. The donations from our supporters are saving lives. Our Maternity fund will stay open as we hope to fully open the building with no debt in 2023.

Nutrition Centre

Hundreds of malnourished babies’ lives are being saved each year at our Nutrition Centre. Our dedicated and professional staff, provide medical care, high protein food and most importantly of all training for mothers and carers so they know how to provide as nutritional food as possible for their children, based on local ingredients. We love empowering mothers to care for their children.

Expedition from the UK

Like many places around the globe, Ghana relaxed Covid-19 admission criteria for entering the country. In summary, all vaccinated adults were able enter Ghana without additional testing. As a result, in partnership with Operation Orphan we were able to run an expedition from the UK in October 2022. Our team of 9 included medics, teachers, social media volunteers and church members travelled to Ghana to support the work and staff of The King’s Village Ghana.

Financial Review

The total income for 2022 of £115,510 was provided by the generous donations from supporters of The King’s Village Ghana. This included restricted donations of £96,159. Expenditure for 2022 totalled £114,877. Careful monitoring of charity’s income and expenditure meant that we ended 2022 with a year end balance of £11,577.

Reserves and Investment Policy

The Trustees have established a policy whereby the unrestricted funds not committed should be ideally three months of the resource required. The Trustees consider the returns on investment to be satisfactory.

Report to the Trustees/Members

I report to the charity trustees on my examination for the period ended 31 December 2022 which are set out below

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Act and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
to follow the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Act, and
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act or

the accounts do not accord with the accounting records

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
