The Parochlal Churth Coun¢ll present their report and flnancial Statements for the year ended 31 December
2023.
The financial statements have been prepared In accordance wlt* the accountlng policles set out In note I to
the flnanclal statements and comply with the Parochlal Church Councll (Powers) Measure 1956, thÈ Church
Accounting Regulatlons 2006, the Charltles Act 2011 and "AccDuntlng and Reporting by charlties.. StatemeTrt
of Recommended Pr3Ctlce appllcable to charitles preparlng their accounts In accordance wlth the Flnancial
Reporting Standard appllcable in the UK and Republlc of Ireland IFRS 1021" (effective from l January 20191.
Alms, oble¢tlves and Actlvltles
In accordance wilh the PCC (Powers) Measure 1956, the PCC of St Mary the Virgin Is responslble for worklng
wlth the Incumbent In promotlng the mlsslon of the church- 5ummarlsed In Its Renewal programme 2015
based on Blshop Chylstopherfs Falth, Hope and Love, and Its revSsed Renewxl programme 2020. The PCC
seeks to shape 311 It does so as to support this mlssion-through the staff It employ5, the flnanclal support It
offers to Indlvlduals and other entitles, the groups that meet each week, also the way the PCC itself Is
orBani52d and sets its agenda.
St Mary's Paro¢hlal Church Councll has the responslblllty of co.operatlng wlth the Incumbent, the Fr Steve
Hall, in promotlng In the parlsh the whole m15sion of the church, p35toral, evangellstlc, soclal and
ecumenlcal. It also has maSntenance re5ponsSbllltles for the church Complex of St Mary the Vlrgln,
Lew15ham,
The Parochial Church Councll have paid due regard to guidance Issued by the Charlty Comrnlsslon in
decldlng what activltSes the chur¢h.should undertake.
In cDmmDn wlth many churches, the charlty Is heavily reliant on volunteers who assist In many aspects of
church Ilfe. The value of their Input cannot be quantlfled and the trustees are very grateful to all those who
give of thelr seFvlces voluntarlly.
Achlevements and pprformance
There are 122 parlshloners on the Church Electoral Roll, 75 of whom are resldent outside the parish. 2
names were removed durlng the year elther through death or because they moved away from the parlsh.
St Mary the Virgln has remalned commltted to Its vislon of Renewal through regular Sunday servlces,
mldweek actlvltles, open church, Its Therapeutlc Garden, spe¢lal events, and by the Ilfe and wltness of
members of the congregation.
Followlng the dlfficult years through the Covld pandemlc, St Mary's has returned to slgns of gn)wth In
attendance, Income and personal faith. Our regular attendance for weekday and Sunday 5ervlces 15 close to
pre-pandemlc levels.
We have restored our prevlous actlvltles wlth ¢oncerts and exhlbltlon5, vlslts from local schools and mental
health, NHS and other support groups for the wlder community.
We have contlnued to Ilve5trepm servlces, Investlng In equlpment and expertlse, and thls now has a strong
Internatlonal followln& Ilnked to families and frlends of those in our congrÈgation,

The Trustees confirni that they have had due regard to the publlc benefil guidance publlshed by the Charity
Commisslon In detemiinlng the actlvltles undertaken by the Charltv.
Financlal revlew
st Mary'5 depends on the generosity of the tongregatlon to meet its flnanclal needs. The results for the
year are set out in the Statement of Flnanclal Adlvities. A deficlt on unrestrlcted fund5 of £4,19212022'.

It is the pollcy of the Church that unrestricted funds whlch have not been de51gnated for a speclflc use
should be malntained at a level equivalentto bÈtween three and slx month's expenditure. The Parochial
Chtjrch Councll conslders that reserves at thi5 level wlll er￿U[e that, in the eveni of a 55gnlflcant drop In
funding, they wlll be able to contlnue the Church's current activStle5 while conslderatlon Is glven to ways In
whl¢h additional fund5 may be raised. Three months unrestrltted expendlture amounts to approxlmately
£25,000 and while the unrestrlrted fund balance in net current assets amounted to £7,60412022'. £11,796)
the Parochlal Church Council are glvlng conslderatSon to how addltional funds may be ralsed and reserves
strengthened.
The Parochial Church Council has assessed the major risks to whlch the Church Is exposed, and are sati5fSed
that systems are In place to mltigate exposure to the major risks.

The Parochlal Church Councll Is a corporate body establlshed bythe Church of England. The PCC operates
under the Parochial Church Countll Power5 Measure. There were six meetlng5 of the full PCC durlng 2023
and in addStlon, there are committees which flow from the PCC and other groups which overseethe work of
the churth whlch met wlth vaiylng frequency throughout the year. Reports from these corllmlttees and
groups were received by the full PCC and discussed where necessary. Reports can be found In the PCC
mlnutes and In the reportto the Annu31 Parochlal Church Meetlng.
The 5tandin8 Commlttee 15 required by law and has powèr to transact business of the pcc between
meetlngs, sublecl to PCC dlrectlons. Members Include the Vlcar, the Curate, the Lay Chalr, the Chuich
W3rden, Secretary and Treasurer. Day-to-day management ofthe church and Its staff team is delegated to
the Incumbent.
The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representatlon Rules. All church
attendees are encouraBed to reg15ter on the Electoral Roll and stand for electlon to the PCC.
