Gold Geese
24/25 Annual Report
Welcome to the Gold Geese annual report 2024-2025.
Trustees Report
Chair of Trustees Message
“This year has been a successful one in terms of growth, delivery of our charitable activities and community engagement. As Chair of Trustees, I am incredibly grateful to our community for helping Gold Geese thrive and continue to grow into a charity where families feel safe to ask for support — and where our team can find the resources and solutions needed to help navigate the many challenges that come with childhood cancer treatment.
It has been a pleasure to watch this year unfold. Gold Geese is unique because we tailor our support to each individual family. Every cancer diagnosis and treatment journey is different, and every family’s circumstances are different, which means our role as Trustees evolves each year too. I always look forward to hearing about the charitable activities our CEO has delivered, and with the addition of another Family Support Worker, the reach and depth of our support continue to improve and expand.
As Gold Geese grows, I am passionate about holding on to our “small charity” feel. The care and consideration behind everything we do, and the way we support our families, is what matters most.
I will be stepping down as Chair at the end of 2025 and handing the role over to fellow Trustee, Sally Bailey. I am confident she will bring fresh energy and enthusiasm to the team as she takes on the role.
Thank you to everyone who supports us. We fly together.
Anna Whyte.”
Flying with Our Gold Families
Every statistic, “story” or article in this report represents a family navigating childhood cancer. Behind every donation spent, every grant, event and social media post is a child, a parent, a sibling. This year, we have continued to tailor our support to each unique journey, because no two families experience cancer in the same way.

At Gold Geese, we know our families well. We know the children’s favourite colours or activities, we know their parents and how they are doing (as best we can). Our end of year report shows our growth, but it doesn’t show how much we care. That is difficult to put into words, but I hope it is obvious in our hard work, determination to improve our services and our dedication to our families.
Team Expansion.
Natalie Turner joined our Gold team in late February 2024. Natalie was a “Gold Mum” and was supported by Gold Geese, following her son, Henry’s, diagnosis of Leukaemia. She is also a qualified teacher. The lived experience and teaching qualifications made her a perfect fit for this role. Knowing first hand what having a child with cancer means and knowing how Gold Geese provide support has helped Natalie fit into the role perfectly.
Since joining Natalie has been trained in gently handling difficult situations with our families, such as end of life support and funeral attendance. She has excelled at building, and will continue to maintain, relationships with parents of children with cancer and has proven it is important to her to keep the charities core values in every step of support she has provided. The ongoing, extensive list of charitable activities shows testament to her work.
As a charity, we are thrilled to have her in our flock.
Improvements we have made in the charity.
Since the employment of another family support worker, our bereavement support has increased and improved. This is an ongoing aim for Gold Geese. Bereavement support after the loss of a child is difficult to find, longer term. The pain of loss and the motions through grief are ongoing for everyone. Especially siblings, who are still learning and navigating their lives as children. Having parents grieving can alter many situations at home and we want to provide a network of support for both parents and siblings.
New this year: A parents spa night for bereaved parents was trialled Spring 2025. We were kindly hosted by the Glasshouse Spa, Upminster, which was a restful and peaceful setting for parents who just needed to chill. After the trauma and turmoil of treatment, followed by the death of their child, which brings so much stress and financial strain from funeral costs etc. We wanted to provide a space when they could enjoy some adult time, uninterrupted and all organised for them. Parents attending were in a safe space to share their experiences, with people who just “got it” and didn’t have to shy away from the harsh reality of child loss.
Our Gold families use of counselling is increasing, and we now have counsellors to recommend in Brentwood, Leigh on sea and Southend. The complexity of counselling people experiencing childhood cancer is challenging, so Gold Geese look not only for qualifications but experience and understanding.
Networking and peer to peer support is an area our little team is always guiding to better places. More meet ups, more networking between families facing similar situations. Gently and carefully placing people together that might be able to support one another – without overwhelm or dependency. The world of childhood cancer is fragile, so we are always aware that things can change at any time. The wellbeing of the families that use our services is always first and forefront in our minds .

Our Grotto party is a great example of peer to peer support, we have grown this event to celebrate with more families around Christmas, which for most is a hard time of year. Flu season brings more fears of infections and more isolation. Family traditions can be cancelled/altered/ruined by cancer and it is difficult to keep jolly under the pressures of childhood cancer treatment.
Since the beginning of the year, Gold Geese have been able to offer support to the Broomfield hospital Paediatric Oncology patients. The hospital ward has been supplied with a fridge and Coffee machine, in the parent’s room, to provide small, but needed, day to day support. Coffee pods are topped up by us as and when needed, along with supplies requested by the play team.
Raising Awareness.
During the month of September we turn everything we can Gold/Yellow to raise awareness of childhood cancer. The signs and Symptoms are on our website and locally we ask as many people as we can to get involved. Every year this grows and expands!
This year’s Gold Geese convoy was a HUGE success, we invited people with yellow or gold cars to join us for the first Saturday in September, to drive together through Leigh on sea and Southend. More than thirty cars turned up, all yellow or gold. It was quite a sight to see and added so much reach to our social media platforms and the wider community that experienced the cars driving by! Volunteers drove their sunny cars together in convoy through the streets of Leigh on sea, down the seafront, all to raise awareness of children with cancer. September 2025, we hope this will be just as successful.
During the month of September we went GOLD on our social platforms, directing people to the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer. Local shops, businesses, schools and individuals wore Gold and Yellow to support the campaign.
Great Ormond Street’s oncology wards, Elephant, Lion and Giraffe wards, and the children’s wards at Southend, Basildon and Broomfield hospitals were all turned GOLD by our team of volunteers and with the help of the lovely ladies at Other letters, supplying an amazing amount of Gold shimmer!
Fundraising events.
Some of our fundraising events this year.
The Ball. Gabby Rankin and a whole crew of wonderful helpers hosted our Ball in January. A huge success for the charity. With swanky food, a beautiful venue at Apton Hall, live music and a brilliant auction. A night our little charity will hopefully do again. Big thank you to Gabby and the whole team for making this so magical.
Nuclear Races. A muddy event that’s so much fun for teams running 2k of obstacles through the mud!
Gosling Race. Our little community of runners come along to Chalkwell beach to run or scoot 1 or 2 miles with their friends. Such a lovely day, just as the schools break up for summer, all raising money for Gold Geese. Local kiddos supporting their peers in the local community.

Ride London. What a day! 60 miles around the capital and out into the Essex countryside on bikes, a beautiful day raising thousands for the charity.
Examples of Charitable Activities.
This list is not exhaustive of everything Gold Geese has delivered this year. Costs for ongoing counselling and food shop vouchers continue to be large outgoings for the charity and emotional/bereavement support is always delivered in hours and hours of texts, calls and meet ups, ensuring none of our families feel isolated or alone throughout their experience of childhood cancer.
Annual event: Grotto party for our Gold families is a private event. We try and minimalise the risk of infection by opening all windows and doors to the venue, everyone comes along wrapped up to enjoy a visit with Santa and real life reindeer, food and drinks and entertainment in the way of magician, characters (Ana, Elsa, Spiderman) and arts and crafts. During the party the children are allowed to choose a gift from our huge pile of toys/teddies, we also gift each family a board game to enjoy together. Hospital stays take so much time away from families that we want to notice their need for quality family time. A gift of £500 John Lewis voucher is also given to the childs parent/s to help with present buying. Gold Geese choose John Lewis because it does everything from ovens to buggies to school uniforms to gifts. Every family is so different to each other that giving them the choice is important to us. We could of course buy gifts for children, but it takes away the joy from the parents to buy and wrap their own presents for their own children – which during difficult times, where lots of milestones are stolen from childhood cancer – is how we feel supports them best.
June 2024.
End of life walk/talk parents. Supporting parents emotionally and giving them space to freely discuss their child/ren and how they’re feeling.
Vouchers. For support with food shopping. There are £250 Sainsburys vouchers, sent Electronically.
Newly diagnosed support. When a child is first diagnosed with cancer, it can feel like a bomb has gone off in the family. There is lots of information to take in . Our family support workers offer a supportive and understanding ear. We also sign post or help to organise some of the logistics of transport to hospitals. Gold Geese can also assist in telling any siblings what’s happening to their brother or sister – in a child friendly way.

Moving forwards
We are always looking to improve our awareness campaign and to improve the visibility of the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer. Childhood cancer is difficult to spot in early stages, it presents like lots of other childhood illnesses or issues. By raising awareness of these signs and symptoms, we hope to empower parents and NHS staff to push for further tests if their gut instinct is that “something isn’t right”. Our campaign stretches throughout September, where we ask everyone we can to join us by turning their shop, office, school, car, house yellow/gold for the childhood cancer colours.
Counselling and mental wellbeing support: Our network of recommended
counsellors/therapists needs to increase, so we will be sourcing professionals in Maldon and North Chelmsford areas as well.
Making people aware of stem cell donations, an area we as a charity want to improve and expand every year. This is mentioned at most of our events, face to face and signposting
9

people to DKMS to register. Increasing the awareness of the need for Stem Cell donors is on our list of things to increase in the next year of Gold Geese.
Other improvements include doing a survey for our families, that is short and not too time consuming, so we can see how well we are supporting them. From the child themselves to their siblings and parents. Gold Geese welcome feedback from families, we can’t change the reality of childhood cancer, but we can try our best to cushion the impact it has. Looking forward, we are continuing in extending our care to children under Broomfield hospital, without stretching the team to thinly so our care is tailored and consistent throughout treatment. Bereavement support naturally changes over time, and this is something we want to look at adjusting as time goes on. A bereaved family never comes off our books, but as their grief changes and time goes on, nothing deletes the grief of losing a child, our support must adjust and be flexible. This ensures that there isn’t a dependence on our charity and encourages families to adjust to their new lives without their child, which is very difficult and takes time, so whilst we can, our counselling support is unlimited.
Volunteers and community
None of our work would be possible without the help of our local community, offering their time in volunteering, their shops and businesses to support, and every single fundraising – big and small, gathering donations for us to support our local children fighting cancer.
This year, as always, there are too many people to thank specifically. But to name a few, Dan Beverly at PMS, thank you for donating all the toys for our Gosling run! For their ongoing support - c2c for always suggesting Gold Geese as a local charity to help. The Hatch, Old Leigh – for hosting our events. OtherLetters – for party supplies! The Bakery Desks for hosting our trustee meetings. Cult coffee, Barlow and Fields and North, for ongoing support in space and Gold awareness campaign networking. All our fundraisers, runners, schools, businesses and local community, we are beyond grateful for your constant efforts and consistent support. Another amazing year as a little charity in Leigh on sea!
Thank you!
Thank you from our Founder, Katie Southgate.
Throughout the year, Gold Geese have stayed strong in our commitment to providing support, joy, and relief to families navigating the challenging journey of treatment, bereavement, and beyond.
Financial Review
These accounts are showing a total surplus for the period under review of £51,435.
It is the intentions of the Trustees to try and keep the running costs of the charity as low as possible, so that as much money can be spent on the children and families that require our support. Our aim is to limit the amount of expenditure on administrative costs as much as possible, and as you can see from the accounts the vast majority of the expenditure related to the support of our Gold Families. We aim to continue this year on year to maximise the level of support we can provide.

Notes to the Financial Statements
1. Accounting Policies
1.1 Basis of preparation of the financial statements
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the applicable Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), on an accruals basis. The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity.
1.2 Fund Accounting
General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity and which have not been designated for any other purpose.
Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by the donors or which have been raised by the charity for particular purposes. The costs of raising and administering each restricted fund (if applicable) is set out in the notes to the financial statements.
Gold Geese had two restricted funds. One Pound Warriors/KM was the collection of donations for one child specifically, for treatments unavailable on the NHS. Sadly, this child did not get to use the funds allocated for his treatment. Legal advice has been obtained on how to suitably utilise the fund alongside the Charity Commission. The second is Essex Community Foundation for ongoing cost of mental health therapy which has been spent during the period on counselling for affected children and their immediate families.
1.3 Incoming Resources
All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received, and the amount of the income can be reliably measured.
Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid is recognised when it is received.
1.4 Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be reliably measured. Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total direct costs and if applicable any shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity.

Fundraising costs are those incurred in seeking voluntary contributions and do not include the cost of disseminating information in support of the charitable activities. Support costs are those incurred directly in support of expenditure on the objects of the charity. Governance costs are those incurred in connection with administration of the charity and compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements.
All expenditure is inclusive of VAT where the suppliers have charged VAT.
1.5 Going Concern
There are no material uncertainties regarding the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern.
1.6 Prior Period Adjustment
