## **Supporting Children on Treatment**

When we refer to “Gold Families” we are including local children on treatment for cancer and their siblings, parents and sometimes extended families depending on the level of care needed. Transport to and from hospitals. Sometimes monthly train. tickets, sometimes cabs to and from appointments. During these hard times food vouchers are also often supplied.

## **Santa’s Grotto**

_Please note_ : the pandemic halted grotto plans 2020 but this happens every year, with help from donations.

Our grotto is a fundraising activity run throughout December. Before opening to the public, we hosted a private showing of our grotto with Santa and live reindeers attending. A magician comes to perform a show, substantial gift cards for the families Xmas shopping, family board games and cuddly toys. Finished with a Christmas arts and crafts table to entertain the little ones.

**----- Start of picture text -----**
C ti
**----- End of picture text -----**
We thought about what is helpful at Christmas to gift our families. The joy of giving gifts or presenting your family with a lovely Christmas meal is such a wonderful feeling that we decided that buying gifts might take away the joy of buying. So with this in mind Gold Geese gifted generous vouchers from John Lewis, that way options of presents, meals, household items, uniforms or shoes can be bought by the parents and gifted accordingly. We try to understand that each family are in different places both with treatment and financially. So trying to do “one gift’ fits all is impossible. But a sizable voucher, we think, is very suitable for everyone and feedback has shown us that this lasts for longer than just for Christmas in some families.

Gold Geese have gifted a number of gaming devices, including nintendo switches and laptops for children travelling to and from hospitals - and for long waits between treatments. Hospital drop offs have included thousands of pounds worth of toys and distractions. Including more beautiful journals for children, to help with anxiety, feelings and communication. The oncology ward staff have given us feedback that these journals have has a positive impact on them. Requesting more, which we will keep providing, as their turnaround of patients is high.

## **Thank You to Blood Donors!**

Amazing people giving up their time to donate blood. Our gold children often receive lots of blood transfusions and platelet transfusions, so saying a big “thank you” where we can.

Not forgetting those on the bone marrow donor. Including Liz – _pictured here_ - when she matched with a patient and donated her Stem Cells. Absolute hero!

## **Awareness Raising**

Go Gold in September is our awareness campaign. Local shops and schools “Go Gold” with Gold Geese to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer.

“Go Gold” in Leigh on Sea, Rayleigh, Southend and Thorpe Bay has grown from year to year. Shops now get involved in turning their windows gold or yellow to raise awareness of not only our charities work but of childhood cancer signs and symptoms. Our website includes these on a separate page for google searches. This information is referenced to the “be child cancer aware” charity. Gold Geese have had various runners and campaigners do events in gold, supporting our charity and raising awareness in their immediate communities.

## **NUCLEAR RACES!**

A private Gold Geese mud run that our lovely friend Lorraine organised. So much fun for everyone involved. This will become a yearly event for us, both for fundraising and awareness raising.

## **Getting Involved!**

Ami Anders of **“Quackers”** Leigh on Sea hosted sing along carols for Christmas and collected donations for Gold Geese for another year. Thank you again Ami!

**“Create 98”** for their generosity in providing their beautiful space and hosting a Bereaved parents evening.

## **Moving Forward / Aims**

- Making sure schools know there are resources available to them, should they need it.

- Continue the work and support of gold families, new and old. Parental support and networking. Parent events for respite and support locally.

**Main Activities undertaken to further the charity’s purposes for public benefit:**

The trustees are mindful of their duty under section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit. The Objectives and activities of Gold Geese focus on delivering services to aid Southend on Sea’s children fighting childhood cancers and are undertaken to further our charitable purposes for the public benefit.

## **Volunteers**

Trustees meetings and communications are voluntary. In September as our Awareness Campaign is underway the voluntary hours would top 100+ and in December time with Grotto volunteers would be average of 30 per week. Gold Geese would like to thank our Volunteers and Fundraisers sincerely and with extreme gratitude.

## **Financial Review**

These accounts are showing a total surplus for the period under review of £35,370 which will assist with all the charitable activities and future developments mentioned above. The pie chart below shows how donated money was spent during the period.

**----- Start of picture text -----**
Outgoing Resources
Memories & Patient Support End of Life/Bereavement Support
Counselling & Treatments Fundraising Events
Raising Awareness Governance costs
Other costs
**----- End of picture text -----**
After the COVID 19 pandemic and government restrictions which were in place in 2020 and 2021, we were able to increase our activities, resulting in an increase in both incoming resources and also the charity spending, specifically on family memories and patient support. We were also able to invest in fundraising activities which help boost the charity’s incoming resources, so we can continue to provide the support for our families.

It is the intentions of the Trustees to try and keep the running costs of the charity as low as possible, so that as much money can be spent on the children and families that require our support. Our aim is to limit the amount of expenditure on administrative costs as much as possible, and as you can see from the pie chart over 70% of the expenditure related to the support of our Gold Families. We aim to continue this year on year to maximise the level of support we can provide.

## **Reserves Policy**

Sufficient reserves are maintained to enable the charity to continue the existing services it is providing and to develop and expand these activities in the future. As at 31[st] May 2022, the charity had unrestricted reserves of £77,458, and restricted reserves of £81,356.

**Notes to the Financial Statements**

## **GOLD GEESE**

## **PERIOD ENDED 31[ST] MAY 2022**

## **1. Accounting Policies**

## **1.1 Basis of preparation of the financial statements**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the applicable Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), on an accruals basis. The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity.

## **1.2 Fund Accounting**

General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity and which have not been designated for any other purpose.

Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by the donors or which have been raised by the charity for particular purposes. The costs of raising and administering each restricted fund (if applicable) is set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Gold Geese has a restricted fund. Collecting donations for one child specifically, for treatments unavailable on the NHS. Sadly, this child did not get to use the funds allocated for his treatment. Gold Geese are now working closely with legal teams and the Charity Commission to change the purpose of the fund.

## **1.3 Incoming Resources**

All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received, and the amount of the income can be reliably measured.

Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid is recognised when it is received.

## **1.4 Expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be reliably measured. Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total direct costs and if applicable any shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity.

Fundraising costs are those incurred in seeking voluntary contributions and do not include the cost of disseminating information in support of the charitable activities. Support costs are those incurred directly in support of expenditure on the objects of the charity. Governance costs are those incurred in connection with administration of the charity and compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements.

All expenditure is inclusive of VAT where the suppliers have charged VAT.
