## **Mundesley Surf Lifesaving Club.** ## **Charity status – Charitable incorporated Organisation 1182164** Trustees- Julie Coleman (Chair) Ryan Callaby, Ian Fredericks (Treasurer) Eleanor Jones ## **Annual report –** For the year ending 28[th] February 2021 In just our second year, we along the rest of the world, we faced the coronavirus pandemic. From being in the middle of our winter swim programme everything came to an abrupt standstill, with guidelines from our governing body, initially denying any club activity to take place. As the year progressed, we were able to operate but under strict new guidelines. We had to practice in strict bubble of 6, maintaining social distancing, and we were not allowed to share equipment. We were not authorised to carry out any minor first aid on participants so parents/carers had to stay within the activity vicinity to receive their child mid-session should the need of arisen. The head coach also had to ensure parents did not enter the bubbles during the session and did not breach guidelines and the start and end of each session. To facilitate the sessions complying with the guidelines we staggered the start of each bubble by 15 minutes. Each child and parent had to sign the covid code of practice for club to be sure everyone was fully aware of what we could and couldn’t do. ## **Membership** At the close of 2020 we had a total 56 members, this is an increase of just 3 members from 2019. Despite having a waiting list we were unable to recruit new members as we had to keep group sizes small in line with C-19 guidelines. All of these members are active in either the delivering or participating in surf lifesaving activities. At the end of the year we had 20 on our waiting list ## **Nipper (age 8-12) Coaching-** 14 Nipper members We recommenced beach activities in July 2020, splitting the Nippers into 3 bubbles each with the same coach working with them each week. The bubbles were not allowed to be greater than 6 including the coach so our participant/coach ratio was 5:1. Each coach was also a qualified lifeguard. Additional lifeguards and the head coach remained outside of the bubbles overseeing the overall safety. ## **Youth (age 13-18) Coaching** 24 Youth members The older Nippers moved up into development youth this season and they operated in the bubble system the same way as the Nippers. Unfortunately, due the fact we were not allowed to share equipment during a session, and our existing youth group of 15/16 year olds did not get to train this year. We just didn’t enough equipment to go round or enough experienced leader who could take on a completely new session. ## **Seniors Coaching** 20 Senior members Most of our seniors are involved in the coaching of the Nippers and Youth, some as qualified coaches, some as lifeguards and some as beach and water helpers. The covid guidelines put a stop to seniors getting involved, and learning the sport for themselves as the 6 bubble system didn’t allow for additional helpers. This was sad as it meant some seniors didn’t really partake in club activity for the whole year. Positively, the leaders running bubbles, stepped out of their comfort zone and were suddenly leading rather than assisting small groups. We saw leaders really develop their practical skills and in turn saw a huge progression in the participants development within the sport. The model of the same leader working regularly with the same group, particularly with the younger members was very positive something we will continue to implement. ## **Beach Warden** In light of the RNLI not opening lifeguarded beaches at the beginning of the season due to C-19, our governing body, set up the Beach warden scheme. This was a brand-new voluntary lifeguard service, in which members with a current lifeguard qualification could undertake additional online training, to act as a Beach Warden. We were not allowed to carry out rescues, but were allowed to operate in an advisory and preventative role on the beach. 11 of our seniors trained as beach wardens and we provided 86 hours of voluntary lifeguard service at Mundesley beach. The RNLI started back on the beach on the 4[th] of July, at the same time we were allowed to open our doors to the training previously mentioned. We liaised and worked closely with the coastguard, North Norfolk District Council and the RNLI whilst carrying out the beach warden service. ## **Training** All of our 14 lifeguards requalified this year. 11 lifeguards undertook additional training to become beach wardens. There were no other training opportunities this year. Coaches remain the same as previous year with - 4 level 1 coaches - 5 level 2 ## **Competition** There were not any competitions held this year due to C-19 ## **Outreach** We were not able to carry out any educational outreach this year. ## **Finance** Start of financial period 1[st] march 2021 = **£2146.37** Unrestricted funds income – during the financial tear 01/03/20 – 28/02/21 our income was £28.493. This is made up from membership fundraising and merchandise with a large proportion £26,420.00 coming from the estate of Miss Mary Evelyn Blomfield. This is the initial payment of the total amount of £ 225,000.00 bequest to Mundesley Surf lifesaving Club. Spending total was £4687 leaving a balance of £2879 Restricted Funds – During the same period our restricted income was £1316.00. This was the total of 2 Grants from Tesco Groundworks, North Norfolk District Council reimbursement for beach warden expenses. There is a balance of £325 remining in the restricted funds. The accounts at the close of the fianacial period was £ (In our club development plan, it was said we would try and maintain a cash balance of £1500.) ## **Equipment** We have not purchased new equipment this year so our main inventory remains the same - 7 Vanquish race boards - 8 soft swell boards - 10 Blue Nipper boards - 2 first aid kits - 8 Nipper rescue tubes - 5 Adult rescue tubes - 5 ex RNLI Gaisford rescue boards - 2 Soft vanquish rescue boards ## **Trustees** MSLSC has operated this year with 4 trustees.
