## Peterborough Lions Club Annual Trustee Statement 2019_20

## Section B

Training of new incoming officers is provided by Lions Club lnternational District 105CE prior to the start of each new term (normally May / June each year) - Our term runs 1st July to 30th June. Peterborough Lions Club (CIO 1182110) is a member club of the lnternational association of Lions Clubs through Lions Club lnternational. The membership of the club has declined slightly over the last few years, it currently stands at 30. We have a wide range of membership from different professions, our youngest member is 37 and our eldest is 93. We are aware of the requirement to continually recruit and retain members, COVID-19 has made the final part of the year particularly difficult with our inability to be able to meet in person. We are largely meeting by Zoom, which works OK for most members. Minutes are sent to all members so they continue to feel engaged with the functioning of our club. Advertising and use of social media is increasingly being used to try to recruit new members. A push to increase the awareness of Lions and increase possible recruitment from a wider area is an ongoing commitment.

Section C Advancement of Citizenship. Promoting the Voluntary sector for the public benefit locally, nationally and internationally.

The relief of poverty by providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief. The advancement of health, assisting disabled people. Promoting conservation Promoting community participation in healthy recreation.

Having had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on Public Benefit, all trustees were issued with the relevant documents, new trustees are supplied with the relevant documentation on appointment.

The club has carried out the following activities this year in respect of the objects of the club.

The members of Peterborough Lions contribute to their the local community by taking part in local fete’s, assisting other organisations with Car Parking duties and support other local Lions Clubs at events. One of our major community events is our Annual Lions Showtime, over 3 nights approximately 550 elderly people are entertained, Peterborough Lions Club organise the event, allocate the seating of groups and individuals, hire the hall, hire the amateur dramatics group, hire paramedics and serve tea & coffee at the break. This is a brilliant opportunity to support our

local community, but sadly due to COVID-19 we have had to cancel this year (May 2021).

Our 3 major fund raisers are our Annual Lions Quiz, our Xmas Carol Float and our Easter Egg raffles. The popularity of our quiz is on the decline, our popular supermarket venues are becoming more difficult to book as other organisations become aware of the usefulness of using the supermarket to market their offerings, we did however raise gross £3,232.37 plus we enabled other charitable organisations to sell our Quiz Sheets on a 50/50 basis, this enabled a further £1,227.50 to be raised by those organisations. Our Xmas Carol Float was badly affected by changes in the COVID status of Peterborough, despite the changes, we were able to gross £1,116.69, it cost us a lot in sweets though !!. Our Annual Easter Egg raffle has only just broken even as the timing of the COVID-19 lockdown coincided with our distribution of the Easter Eggs, some of our publicans have been very generous and have ensured that we have broken even. 4 members of our club are also District Cabinet members, one is also a national representative.

The clubs policy on grant making is based on how the organisation has carried this out over its 48 year history before becoming a ClO, we are now in our 51[st] year continuing to serve our community. Applications from the public are reviewed and investigated by our Welfare committee, the recommendations are then submitted to the normal Business Meeting for the Trustees & Club members to agree. Based on the merits of the application the club is invited to agree a sum and vote to accept or reject, counter proposals may also be heard. lf the vote achieves a majority approval it is then ratified by the Trustees and if approved the grant is made by the treasurer to the person or organisation requesting assistance, we are very happy with the rigorous approach our club makes to assess the validity and need of requests. Applications for funding from Commercial organisations or for Commercial or for potentially illegal purposes are automatically rejected. The club does not at present have any investments, it does however own a 4 year old 17 seater minibus purchased in February 2020 to replace our previous minibus that had been written off following an accident in May 2019. The minibus is housed in a secure compound with CCTV & floodlights.

Peterborough Lions are quite resourceful, but do call on additional support from friends and family as and when required.
