or other leisure time adivities in the
interests of social welfare with the object of
improving the condition of life of the said
inhabitants, in particular by the provision of
swimmin

Trustees did engage with representatives
from the county and district councils, local
councillors and officers of Allerdale
Borough Council. They have also engaged
with Ihe local community as part of a
consultation in relation to new swimming
facilities. Meetings with funders have also
taken place. However, the decision by the
local authority in May 2023 to not progress
the swimming pool has meant the CIO has
been dormant since.
Trustees have regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity Commission on

Achievements and Performance
SORP r8f&r8nce
Since its eslablishment, the charity's
trustees secured funding lo conduct
surveys of the old swimming pool building
at Netherhall School. The surveys aimed to
determine the level of investment needed
to refurbish Ihe existing building, pool, and
associated facilities.
Summary ofthe main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity's work has made to
the circumstances of ils
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Pdra 1.20
However, rising costs associated with the
Netherhall School pool and restrictions
imposed by the school's governors led the
trustees to explore the feasibility of
constructing a new pool on or near The
Wave in Maryport.
In 2019, additional funding was obtained
through the Bright Ideas Fund (Power to
Changel to support a swimming needs
assessment and feasibility study. This
study incorporated capital and ongoing
revenue costs, along with a series of
community consullalions. The final report,
completed in February 2020, was shared
with Allerdale Borough Council and local
councillors, who expressed their support for
reintroducing swimming facilities to
Maryport.
Trustees continued to collaborate with
members ofthe Maryport Regeneration
team to advance the project. In 2021,
Allerdale Borough Council confirmed that a
new swimming pool was included in a
series of regeneration initiatives for the
town, with funding secured through the
Future High Street Fund IFHSI and the
Heritage Action Zone {HAZ}.
Allerdale Borough Council ceased to exist
when the new unitary authority,
Cumberland Council took over on 1st April
2023. Due to rising costs and long-lerm
revenue implications, the Council decided
not to progress with the swimming pool
plans - see here. Therefore, the trustees
have decided lo close the CIO as there is
no other viable alternative in Maryport.
