KlezNorth report from Trustees 6[th] April 2024 to 30[th] June 2025
In April 2025 we held the annual KlezNorth weekend in Youlgrave which was attended by over 90 people. We reduced the numbers from the 100+ attendees of previous years, despite demand, in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. The tutor team was led by international Klezmer expert Alan Bern and cantor Rachel Weston. The team included Sayumi Yoshida teaching dance, and musicians John McNaughton, Francesca Ter Berg and Flora Curzon. The weekend included the traditional Friday night lighting of the sabbath candles and a Havdole ceremony on Saturday evening. A highlight of the weekend was the dance walk. This had not been possible in 2024 due to inclement weather but in 2025 took place in brilliant sunshine - a wonderful way to enjoy the Derbyshire countryside. After KlezNorth 2025 the chair, Ian Stern, stepped down after several years of service and we thank him for the immense contribution he has made to KlezNorth over the years. After careful reading of our governing document, we realised that it does not require a named chair (or any named officers) and so the trustees have decided to try operating as a collective as we plan for KlezNorth 2026.
