ANNUAL REPORT AND ACCOUNTS FOR 2020-2021

The church continued regular ministry during 2020–2021 within the restrictions on church activities introduced by the UK government due to the Coronavirus / COVID19 pandemic. Activities were reduced, and held entirely online during the height of the pandemic, gradually restarting and moving back to physical meetings in 2021.

Kidderminster Evangelical Church is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), charity number 1181958. This report covers the period from 1[st] July 2020 to 30[th] June 2021.

We thankfully acknowledge the Lord’s leading us as a church and His provision for the resources needed to carry out His work. To Him be the glory.

1 Review of activities and achievements

1.1 Services and Meetings

The Rev Philip Hearn has continued to lead the ministry and work of the church.

Regular meetings for services of worship to God were held every Sunday at 10.30 am. Services were held online only (on Zoom) from 5[th] July to 27[th] September and from 8[th] November to 29[th] November 2020. Services were held in a hybrid manner for attendance at the church and online from 4[th] October to 1[st] November 2020 and 6[th] December 2020 to 27[th] June 2021, except the services on the 3[rd] and 24[th] January which were held online due to snow. Services were also streamed live to YouTube. On 16[th] , 23[rd] and 30[th] August 2020 trial meetings for re-opening were held at the church at 5pm. Meetings for prayer and bible study have been held online on Thursday evenings at 8.00 pm.

We have been blessed by the ministry of several visiting missionary speakers: Steven Green (ReachAcross) on Sunday 18[th] October 2020, and Wayne O’Leary (SGA) on Sunday 6[th] June 2021 both led Sunday services. Steve and Cathy Tibberts (NTM) joined for a Missionary Prayer meeting on Thursday 4[th] March 2021.

Preaching

In our morning services over Summer 2020 we concluded a series in Revelation (chapters 1 to 3). This was followed in the Autumn by a series in 1 Corinthians (also chapters 1 to 3). At the monthly communion services we started to look at the book of Job. Over winter 2020–2021 we studied the life of Abraham (Genesis 11 to 22). At monthly family services we considered the book of Acts, chapters 1 to 3.

At three trial evening services for the re-opening of the church, during August 2020, we studied Psalms 84, 126 and 17.

During Thursday evening prayer meetings we looked at Psalms 20 to 34, and Psalm 119 vv 1-88. At our bible study meetings we reviewed Ephesians 1 v 1 to 2 v 10, then followed the nine-part “God’s Big Picture” series produced by Vaughan Roberts[1] .

Other Activities

Share Care and Prayer (first Saturdays of the month) were cancelled due to restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemc. The ladies’ bible studies, Tuesday Group meetings and Music Fellowships also did not take place during the year for the same reason.

Although the face-to-face Tuesday Fellowship Hour were also cancelled, a Tuesday afternoon bible study and prayer was held online on Zoom from 7[th] July to 21[st] July and on 15[th] September 2020.

A “Chat Cafe” hour was held online on Zoom on many Tuesday evenings from 2[nd] February 2021. This provided a space for members of the congregation to meet during the COVID-19 lock-downs, and for those who could not physically meet for other reasons.

The Pastor ran a church membership bible study on Monday mornings 15[th] and 22[nd] March 2021.

A week of prayer was held from 21[st] to 27[th] March 2021.

1.2 Links with other churches

The church is a member of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC). The Pastor continued as a member of the Steering Group for the Worcestershire Gospel Partnership and coordinated the meetings of the Pastors Fraternal of the Partnership. These have been taking place online via Zoom during the time of COVID-19 restrictions. The Pastor also co-ordinates a monthly prayer update for churches within the partnership to be praying for one another.

The church continues to have a good relationship with Christ Church Wyre Forest and joined with Christ Church on Zoom on Wednesday 8[th] October 2020 for an interview with Jeremy Marshall entitled “more to life”, describing his battle with cancer and faith in the Lord. The church also joined with Christ Church for a session on “The Christian and Dementia” led by Karen Worrall, who had cared for her parents who had both lived with different forms of dementia.

1.3 Children's and Young People's work

Kids’ Club

There was no Kids’ club on Sunday mornings during the year due to the COVID-19 restrictions. However, a children’s bible talk was included as part of most Sunday morning services during the year.

Monday Club

The Monday Club continued to meet online for teaching and occasional games nights, using Zoom due to the continuing restrictions related to COVID-19. Although the restrictions relaxed in early 2021 there was a consensus amongst the parents and group members that they would prefer the group to remain online for the time being.

The teaching has been carried out by Louise Weber and Angharad Hale with the Pastor hosting the meetings and providing technical support. The group was taught

all in one group and studied some of the parables from Luke's gospel. The teaching was then taken from the “Click” bible-teaching curriculum books. Having the meetings online enabled the use of videos and songs as part of the teaching.

In the summer term the group was able to meet in Brinton's Park for some games nights. Five children from church families regularly attended and were joined by one further child from outside the church.

Teen Bible Study

There were no Teen bible studies held during the year due to both COVID-19 restrictions and most teenagers involved starting at university in September 2020.

1.4 Local Outreach work and Community Involvement

Outreach and Evangelism

Opportunities for outreach and evangelism organised at a church level have been limited through the year as a result of national restrictions on social contact and meetings due to the Coronavirus pandemic. After a break since April 2020, delivery of Good News Papers to about 300 homes around the church was restarted with a Summer edition in July and August 2020, and continued monthly through the autumn. Leaflets produced by the church were included with the papers, and a printed Christmas leaflet giving a brief Christian message and details of our meetings and how to join online. Due to further Coronavirus restrictions in the New Year, deliveries were stopped again from February through to April 2021. Deliveries were restarted but have been put on hold again since June due to the limited number of people available to carry out the work. The evangelism team will review the ongoing use of the Good News Papers as part of the outreach of the church.

The church participated in the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal again in November 2020, with some Christmas Boxes being made up and delivered to the collection point at Riverside Church, Bewdley, while others in the church made online donations to the appeal.

Two evangelistic carol services and a Christmas day family service were held online, one of the carol services including input from the Monday Club children. Around 20 extra people joined on Zoom at these services together with some watching the live stream on YouTube where that was made available. There were also an additional twelve adults who joined on Zoom for our Easter Guest Service in April.

The evangelism group met again on 25[th] May 2021 to consider plans for the autumn and beyond, including plans for another KEMP Hospice Coffee morning in November, for supporting Operation Christmas Child again, and for training and participation in “A Passion for Life 2022”. Plans for the development of a toy library are also still being considered.

Tuesday Group

Despite being unable to meet owing to COVID-19 restrictions we have been able to keep in touch with Tuesday Group members by telephone and letter. We have suffered the sad and sudden loss of our friend June Smith in April this year and some of us were able to attend her funeral and offer our condolences to her daughter Tracey, another Tuesday Group regular. We were also sorry to lose our friend John Keble who passed away whilst in a care home locally, and we were represented at his funeral service.

We have also suffered the disappointment of trying to set dates for a renewal of our meetings only to be thwarted by the continued restrictions. (We are now pretty confident that meetings will be able to go ahead from September 2021.) The Tuesday Group regulars are looking forward to this with great enthusiasm. Please continue in prayer for the Lord’s blessing upon us all, especially for those among the church membership who may feel able to support the ongoing work of Tuesday Group.

Alzheimer’s Society and Hereford & Worcestershire Age UK and ONSIDE

Singing for the Brain has been held online during the year. It is hoped that the group will restart in autumn 2021. However it will be hosted by Franche Community Church as the Alzheimer’s Society want to change the meeting day to a Tuesday, which clashes with church activities.

There is a good deal of uncertainty about the future of the Dementia Carers Group as participants’ circumstances have changed over the period of lock-down.

Dementia Café was held at the church on 18[th] December 2020 and 18[th] June 2021.

Other activities

Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings were not held at the church during the year due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

The church premises were used as a polling station for the local elections and police and crime commissioner election on 6[th] May 2021.

1.5 Wider Missionary Work

The church continues to support in giving and in prayer a number of missions and individuals, as listed in section 2. A monthly missionary prayer meeting has been held on Zoom on the evening of the first Thursday of the month at which a summary prayer update is provided for the month. This has been coordinated and produced by Kevin Mason with help from Wana Turner and Chris MacLean.

The church continues particularly to support in prayer and financially, our church members, Stephen and Cathy Tibberts and their family, serving the Lord with NTM at North Cotes, Lincolnshire. The church also has a special interest in Jonathan Hearn

who is working with ReachAcross full time in North Africa. At the church meeting in November it was agreed that the church should also support with a small annual gift Vesselin and Irena Krastev in Bulgaria through the Slavic Gospel Association.

During the year we have had visits from missionaries and mission representatives as follows:

1.6 Membership Matters

In July 2020 the membership of the church was 24 full members and 6 associate members. One of the associate members, John Keble, was called home to be with the Lord in March 2021. Three new members – Wendy Fernandez, Tracey Taylor and Jane Bettis – were accepted as full members of the church at the church meeting in April 2021. In June 2021 Kevin and Catherine Mason resigned their membership of the church. The membership of the church at the close of the year in June 2021 stands at 25 full members and 5 associate members.

1.7 Church Buildings

The buildings have mainly only been used for the Sunday morning meetings due to restrictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, so there has been little general wear and tear with which to deal. One of the panes of the vestry window was broken and was replaced on Wednesday 16[th] June 2021.

General provision of routine servicing of utilities was maintained through the year including gas boilers and hob, fire alarm and emergency lighting systems, fire equipment and electrical appliances. Remedial work replacing defective emergency lights and old fire safety signage was carried out on 21[st] and 22[nd] September 2020.

The five-yearly electrical services inspection and test was carried out on 4[th] August 2020. Remedial work from this including reinstating motion sensors and emergency lighting in the rear hall toilets, and sorting out problems with the lighting circuit in the rear hall toilet hallway and electrical ring main of the rear hall sockets was carried out on 15[th] June 2021.

In following up the fire risk assessment carried out in June 2020 the Trustees have produced a fire safety policy for the church and have had quotes for the installation of emergency lighting in the older main church hall and entrance and for the extension of the current fire detection and alarm system to this area. It is planned that the work

on the installation of the emergency lighting should be budgeted for and carried out during 2021-22 and the extension of the alarm and detection system in 2022-23. The Annual Fire Maintenance inspection was carried out on 6[th] August 2020.

Housekeeping, enabling in-person meeting to take place at the church during the COVID-19 restrictions, was maintained by Marion Hearn, to whom thanks are due. Certain other members and friends did useful work out of doors cleaning up the car park borders and areas to the side and rear of the church, especially Munawar Masih and Tony Vickery.

In January 2021 the church received a self assessment questionnaire from Worcestershire Regulatory Service, Environmental Health and Servicing, relating to the church kitchen and its use. This indicated the need for a food safety, hygiene and cleaning policy, which the trustees have produced for the church. Tracey Taylor has now completed the level 2 food hygiene training and is supporting the trustees in the implementation of the policy for safe use of the kitchen and provision of food at church events.

As ever, church members are encouraged to report any issues of maintenance and health and safety with regard to the premises, to the leadership.

1.9 Conclusion

We are grateful to God for the leadership and ministry of Rev Philip Hearn and the Elders over the past year. Many members contribute to the weekly running of activities and the various rotas set up to enable the church to function effectively. We thank God for His enabling, particularly this year during the COVID-19 pandemic and lock-down disruptions. We also thank him for all who partake in the work. We continue to trust the Lord for the future life of the church.

2 Financial Report

The 2020-21 financial saw income at a stable level and able to cover our expenditure. Details of the financial year are given below.

Receipts and Payments Accounts for the 2020-21 financial year ended 30[th] June 2021 are attached. All figures in this commentary are rounded to the nearest whole pound.

General (including restricted giving) income was £49,743 (compared with £50,500 in 2019-20). This exceeded our expenditure, so given the pandemic and its financial implications this is shows how the Lord has provided for the church. Tax recovered through Gift Aid was £7,456. This represents 14.99% of total income, so very similar with last year. Giving for restricted purposes including tax recovery was £1,406, equating to 2.8% of total income.

Expenditure was £47,381 compared to £51,730 in 2019-20. Like last year the Trustees had agreed to use some reserves for some maintenance on the church. These payments were made by releasing some of the excess financial reserves which are beyond what we are obliged to hold. £2,050 went on renewing the felt on the flat roof over the rear hall and £1,011 on bringing the fire safety system up to the latest recommended standards. If we ignore the payments from reserves this brings our spending down to £44,320 which is £5,423 below our income. This means the church has actually increased its reserves over the year. One reason for expenditure being so low compared with last year is the reduction in use of the church through much of the year due to the pandemic. This reduced our utility bills considerably.

The church ended the year with 45.2% (£22,082) of the annual expenditure budget of £48,906 in hand, compared with last year’s 42.6%. It is recommended to maintain a minimum of 16.7% (1/6[th] ) of annual expenditure to ensure sufficient cash flow and a cushion against emergencies.

Financial support for missionary work (elsewhere in the UK and overseas) amounted to £7,426. This represents around 14.9% of all church income compared to an

agreed target of 12%. Support for missionary work from main church (unrestricted) funds plus reserves was approximately 13.8% of our total unrestricted income.

In summary our income more than met our expenditure and our spending on Christian work was again above target.

Please pray that our income for 2021/22 will cover our expenditure and that our giving towards Christian work in this year will continue to be generous.

3 Administration

3.1 Management of the Charity

At the end of June 2021, the church is led and managed by one Pastor, Philip Hearn, and one Elder, Phil Weber. Kevin Mason also served as an Elder until his resignation on 2[nd] June 2021. Jointly the Pastor and Elders served as the Charity Trustees of the CIO. Kevin Mason was replaced as Charity Trustee (but not as Elder) by Matthew Carver, who serves as an Acting Trustee in accordance with the provisions of the church constitution.

The role of the elders is to assist the Pastor in leading, governing, pastoring and teaching the church. Phil Weber performed the role of Church Secretary. Matthew Carver served as Deacon and as the Treasurer of the church.

The CIO Charity Trustees (Pastor and Elder(s)) meet regularly to discuss the oversight of the church, including ministry and pastoral matters, as well as to pray for the church and its work. They also meet at least four times annually together with the Treasurer to deal with the administrative matters including finance.

The Pastor chaired discussions in Charity Trustees and Church Meetings.

CIO Charity Trustee / Elders' agenda meetings were held on 7[th] July and 6[th] October 2020; and on 5[th] January and 13[th] April 2021. The Treasurer also attended these meetings. CIO Charity Trustee Ministry meetings were held on 4[th] August and 10[th] November 2020; and 10[th] February, 5[th] May and 8[th] June 2021. An away-day was held on 27[th] January 2021. Informal update and prayer meetings were held on 25[th] August, 21[st] September and 8[th] December 2020; and 11[th] January and 10[th] March 2021.

These meetings were all held online on Zoom during the COVID-19 lock-down.

Church meetings for the CIO were also held online on Zoom. The AGM was held on 25[th] November 2020 and a half yearly meeting on 28[th] April 2021. An Extraordinary Church meeting was held on 30[th] June 2021 to elect an Acting Trustee. Additional social meetings of the church congregation were held on Zoom on 11[th] August 2020 and 3[rd] March 2021.

3.2 Management of the building

There was several items of work carried out on the church during the year with associated expenditure as set out in the buildings report (Section 1.7).

3.3 Name and number of Charity

The church is constituted and known as Kidderminster Evangelical Church. Kidderminster Evangelical Church was registered as a charity on 11[th] February 2019, with registered charity number 1181958. The freehold title of Kidderminster Evangelical Church was for the first time registered with the Land Registry on 10[th] May 2018 and the register of title issued with Carol Warren, Tony Vickery and Christine MacLean named as holding trustees. The register of title was issued by the Land Registry on 4[th] July 2019 with Kidderminster Evangelical Church (CIO Reg. No. 1181958) named as the proprietor. The assets of the previously constituted body (Charitable Unincorporated Association) were transferred to the CIO on 4[th] July 2019.

The CIO Charity Trustees are Rev. P. Hearn, Dr. P. Weber and Mr. M. Carver. Mr. Carver serves as an acting trustee in accordance with the church’s constitution, §12.3.1 and §12.4.3.

3.7 Agents and Advisors to the charity

The Church’s local solicitors are Wright Solicitors, 6 Load Street, Bewdley, Worcestershire, DY12 2AF. The Independent Examiner of accounts is Mr. I. Phillips AICB (Comp), The Local Bookkeeper, 6 King’s Road, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, DY11 6YU. Insurance Policies are brokered by Access Insurance Services, Selsdon House, 212-220 Addington Road, South Croydon, Surrey, CR2 8LD. The policies held are Employers Liability and Public/Product Liability provided through Congregational, a trading name of Integra Insurance Solutions Ltd, Currer House, Currer Street, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 5BA.

The Charity has a bank account with the Charities Aid Foundation Banking Service (CAF).

3.8 Restrictions on charity

The assets of the church can only be used for such (charitable) purposes connected with the church or otherwise for the promotion of religion in accordance with the church’s Declaration of Faith.

3.9 Aims of the charity

The charity’s aim is the promotion of religion in accordance with the church’s Declaration Of Faith as has been the case ever since the foundation of the church in 1930.

3.10 Organisation of charity

The church operates from its premises in Greatfield Road, Kidderminster providing a place of Christian worship and other related activities. These activities are organised and carried out jointly by the employed Pastor, by the elected Elder(s) and Deacon and by members in a voluntary capacity. Various other individuals are engaged to lead worship services and other activities on an occasional basis.

The church supports a number of Christian missionary and relief organisations on a regular basis and is affiliated to the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC), 39 The Point, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 7QU.
