ST JPtsIES'S CHURCH, RYDE ISLE OF ThTIGFiT CHURCH COUNCILS REPORT ICONTINUEDI for the ear ended 31 December 2020 The Church Council is responsible, inÈer alia, for the rnanagernent and adrninistration of the ChuTch finances and +he care and maintenanee of the fabric of the church buildings and the Than5e and for any action other matter referreol to It in ecordance with the Constitut-: on. A¢hieveThents and erf otmance Looking back 2020, it LS rue to say that we h.ave never had a year like it. The global pandemic changed so much, and as a local church we had. to aclapt very quickly to a different way of lovingi caringi feeding the congregation and continuing to be a witness of Jesus Ch=ist to the coromunity of Ryde. Just weeks before the first national ltrekdo in March 2020, the Church Council voted for St. James's to leave thè Church of England arLd join the kngl-' can Mis$ioTh in ngand. The Church Thernbership needed to vote on changir.g the goverD.ing document and the Church Council voted to leave the Chureh of England. Both the votes received overwhelTring support. FollOwng a cEash course in learning to produce videos, live-5trearning our services and comiD.¢J to terrns with the world of Izoom,, it is encouraging to reflect that God's word continued to go Out from St. James's faithfully throughout the year to visitors and -hurch Trernbers alikè. froTri the yourygest to the Trost senior. As soon as re$tEictions lifted we once again Thet in the church builclir.gN and live streamed $etvices. This enabled everyoD.e in the church family to meet in some capacity. When larget gatherings were permltted outsidè we haol family services in a garden, and also the men and wo]nen's groups met outside without restrictions. In addition to the Annual General MeetinrJi WÈ have two further Fellowship MeetinfJs each year, whe=e finances, aD.d any Major initLatives are pyesented. This keeps the church family inforLtLed and opportunities to ask tsL.es¥Lons. We also hold monthLy piayer rneetings on a Wednesday and Saturday breakfast. The Wednesday prayer meeting will have a particular focL.S praying for our ThSSIon partners serving acros5 the WOEId. Pastoral support is led by the two ]niIiLSters, but those serving on the LeadÈtship Team and srnall group leader8 all share the responsibility to care for every mert>ei of the church family. As a cb.urch fanllly so much of the pastoral work of encouraging and pointin¥ eath other to Jesus goes on unster. but the fruit is seen in alY becoming more coranitted to the Lord JÈSUS. In addition to the house groups that are opèn to all we have specific ministries for Len. women and children. mwns.com has changed shape this last year due to the restrictions that have been irL place. Last year. we divided the gtoup up into Sller hub gioup5 which have net in person (when allowedl, but also over zoom, WhatsApp video calls and in any way that we can. tqe have Ellissed Theeting to<Jether as a layge groupi but it has also proved to bÈ a blessing to have these SllLalLer hub groups, where wè have perhaps been able to get to %now one another on a deeper level.
ST JAMES'S CHURCR RYDE, ISLE OF WIGHT CHURCH COUNCILS REPORT ICONTINUEDI for the ear ended 31 DecenÈber 2020 We have stlldled Philippian8 l ancl 2 and have found this so incredibly reLÈvaryt1 At tb.e tiTre of writing this letter, Paul's life was full ot hatdshipi and yet his ircunstap.ces did r&Ot prevent him from rejolcing. because his greatest passion was to kn(>w Chr&St and to Thake him known. Studying this letter has enabled us to tb.ink through what it means to i)e partneys in the gospel, and we pray that through the work of Hi5 Spirit in us, we rnay say together. Ov&r bhe last year 'WoEnen at work 4 CELTiSt' has continued to meet over Zoorn every 5 weeks to share encouragements &nd consider the opportunities we have to discuss our faith with others, paTti¢ularly at this difticult time. In our study Lme we have been working throkng.ry the 'Women of Faith, study guide by Mary Davis. TogethÈr, we hatre been looking more closely at soTre of the wornep. in the Old Testament and thinking about how we can apply what we learp. to the day to day situations we face 'n our own lives. with regarrls to the children and young people's work, the last year has resulted in a change in fc>cus for the childreD.'s and youth mlnistiy. The shift has been away frollL our regular peer-group teaching and discip'eship Ilike Sunday Club groupsl and towards more faTriLy-centered discipleship and teaching. Both of these are v'tal, which has probably resultect in a rnixture OE pa.n and blessing for children and families over the past Thonths. Here, s how things work*d out. WÈ began producing weekly Sunday Club videos which included Bible teaching IsomÈtiTre5 from different menbers of the congEegatior,I activities to do with your famiLyN and shar'ng photos and videos of previou5 activities. For the autumn tÈnn focus Shifted to a fortnightlyi in-person, family serv-.ee (with online teaching for the alternate weeks) The restrictions took a bit of et.Ing used to, but there was teal joy in seeing one another and worshlpptng together. This culminated in our Wativi=y service aid ChristTras Day family service. It took us a little while to get tme Friday Night Youth Group up and runniigi bllt once we did, this group has met fortnightly ftsi the oluration of the pandemic. iqe had the joy of in-person meetlngs during the alltun term, but otherwise have been on Zoo]n for the various lockdowns. Our natural outlets for evangelism have been severely hampeEed. in the last year, and we. like many feLlowships, have struggled to have èYaD.geli5rn on the agencla of c>ur life and witness. It is to ThLy shame that this IS the case, and I anL profoundly challenged that the BlblÈ gives no licentte to shelve oai witness because our cirCU5tanCes change. In the coming year. we uSt cowoit outselves to llLaking Christ known. That said, we Trust give great thanks for the drive-in carol service at Tesco. Tb&iS was well received, and ceitainly showed the cornUnitY in Ryde that the church 1st. Jarnes, s & Grace Churchl wanted to proclaim the wonderful Christmas story. It was sad that the Tiddlywinks group has not been able to meet physically ovet the last year, but we were really thril-.ed to still be able to lay on Easter and summÈr erviees over video. At Christma51 due to the ease in restrittions, we managed to run an event called 'Fo'.low the star,, whicri was ' walk-through nativity, on Appley seaf ront, where he toddlers collected stars and met characters from the nativity along the way. This all led to thew. finding baby Jesus in the stable., Thi5 event was enormous fun and we were all so thrilled to be back together aga4n.
ST JPtrIES'S CHURCH, RYgE ISLE ThTLGRT CHURCH COUNCILS REPORT ICONTINUEDI fot the ear ended 31 December 2020 There were still opportunities for reaching out to farnilies and young people over the ChristnEs period. The Gingerbread House @ HoThe event included options ftrr building WLth children and Vicki Wright recorded a short gospel talk to accoTrpany It. The Binstead PLdvent Trail had little take up but did provicte some contact and conversations with lo¢al fami lias about the good news of Christrnas. The other activity that we have at Christmas tirne is the seniors rneal, this too could not be done this year. However, an azTry of hèlpers put together hampers £oE the in the fellowship and also others known to people. fhis was a great blessing to all who received a hamper. The NatLVlty Service Livestream actually provided lots of opportunities for people who wouldn't nornally COllLe to tb.È service to hear the gospel. Several local fanLil4es who wouldn't coThe to the church Duilalng tuned in, along with vatitrus others across the whole country. Not only do we want to win the lost and disciple the believer in Ryde, but through our mission partners we long to see the same work across the world. We a150 support several couples and individuals, financially. in prayer and ¢ontact. This is a huge privilege and tremendous encoutagernent to the church family. We are very huThbled that the Lord has kÈpt us as a fellowship as we seek to live out what a New Testament church looks like.
