## **Strategic Review**

Country Days is an Educational Charity providing outdoor learning in a beautiful nature reserve for young people aged 7-11 in Bedfordshire, giving children who have little or no access to the countryside an opportunity to learn in and about nature.

We are grateful for the dedication of our patrons, trustees, teachers, support staff, volunteers and our fundraising committee whose dedication and enthusiasm has made all this possible. We are equally grateful to all those who have supported us and proud of what we have achieved to help create a brighter future for children on low-income families in Bedfordshire and hope you enjoy reading about it.

Research has highlighted why stimulating interest in the natural environment is the key to unlocking learning potential, building confidence and resilience to give children a more positive future.

Each year we have delivered more places to more children, extended the scope of our courses to deliver our most ambitious curriculum to date and received our most positive feedback from teachers, parents, and children.

We have introduced new activities, hired more staff, had more volunteers and are creating a bank of teachers and volunteers for the future. The family fun day and quiz night have continued to raise awareness and allowed the charity to play a more central community role.

50% of our children this year were FSM, pupil premium or SEND and the need to support the growing number of these children is vital.

We will continue to publicise our funding on social media platforms, newsletters, word of mouth and local fundraising events.

We have been awarded National funding for the first time by the National Lottery and were delighted to receive the High Sheriff award in recognition of our one-day course especially designed for children of the Grange Academy.

_“Country days has been an amazing opportunity for our children during the holidays. The charity has been kind enough to open a day especially for our pupils who all have special educational needs at Grange and have made multiple accommodations for the needs of our pupils. The organisers of the days out have been amazing with our pupils and have given them opportunities and experiences they wouldn't usually have such as pond dipping and making dens. All of our pupils loved the day out and talked about it for months after. The children felt like they had achieved so many accomplishments from the day out and it enabled them to build their confidence. I have also had lovely feedback from parents about how nice it is to have a day out especially for our pupils in a safe and comfortable environment. We are so excited to continue these days for our pupils”_ **Megan Jones, Grange Academy**

## **Our Journey**

In 2018 Country Days was founded by Ann Hadfield MBE to help vulnerable young people in Bedfordshire learn to thrive by learning and spending time in nature. She sadly passed away before the first course but her 2 daughters Esme and Helen took over, we had 24 children **2018** attending on our first course

In 2020 Covid hit and we did our online courses which over 50 children took part in our online learning, In 2021 our we decided to **2020/2021** expand our courses for Easter and summer and saw 150 children attend

**2024** In 2024 the Easter course was a great success. Pond dipping remains a very popular and rewarding activity and the occasional sunshine encouraged not only newts but also water boatmen, pond skaters, water spiders beetles and mayfly nymphs to appear. Summer course 2024 we increased our activities from 4 to 5 and had over 300 children

## **Our projects and ambitons**

We want to continue to run our outdoor learning courses of one- or two-days duration during the Easter and Summer holidays at a local nature reserve for 300 children aged between 7-11 from low-income families in Bedfordshire who have little or no access to the countryside.

Each year we review our courses using teacher, parental and child feedback and adjust our curriculum accordingly. Our courses this year were the most successful to date, receiving the most positive feedback from parents and children.

Our links with schools and organisations continue to grow rapidly. However, due to the cost-of-living crisis, the pressures on the education and welfare systems, we believe the work Country Days does in the community in Bedfordshire has become increasingly vital to support the emotional wellbeing of children 7- 11 consequently we need to broaden its reach to include more children throughout the year.

Therefore, we want to expand our activities to include a Saturday morning club run by 2 teachers so that we can give more children the opportunity to benefit from being outside and learn in a beautiful nature environment.

We need to make improvements including permanent compost toilet facilities at the nature reserve and raise funds for the additional staff to make this possible.

## **Our Strategic priorites**

## **ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE ACTIVITIES AND FOOD**

Through our face-to-face delivery, maintain that 50% of places are accessed by young people meeting our criteria and alleviate barriers created by financial hardship. Increase access to healthy meals and snacks at our face-to-face provision.

## **EXPAND OUR REACH**

Ensure that the delivery locations are reflective of where referrals are being received from, where there is most local need, and where we can build strong relationships within the community.

## **FUNDRAISING**

Continue our relationship with our existing funders where possible, explore new funding, extend and develop our fundraising activities.

## **What Patrons, Trustees, Staf and Volunteers say about us**

## **Lionel Stewart MBE (Patron)**

"It is my pleasure to be a Patron of Country Days, as a school governor for over 30 years I have always held the view that EVERY child has a talent it is for us to nurture that talent and in doing so give him or her the confidence to get through life with head held high. Country Days gives so much to the young people that attend each year and are always looking at new ideas to stimulate the learning.

The staff, the volunteers and trustees work together to provide a meaningful experience for all that attend each year. On a number of occasions, I have had the pleasure of visiting the project in action and to see the enjoyment that is evident is priceless.

To our funders I say a big thank you and assure you your money is well spent.

Here's to the future”

## **Caroline Waterfall (Trustee)**

“I support Country Days because I would like every child to have the nature experiences that I was able to have as a child”

## **Claire Innes (Trustee)**

“I support Country Days because it's a wonderful charity providing a much needed solution for local young people. I love the outdoors, and think everyone should have easy access to nature, it's so good for mental health and wellbeing, amd the fact that many young people don't get enough access or have enough opportunities to be in nature is a very sad situation. Country Days really meets this need, and there's a desperate need in the Bedfordshire area. This charity has a real impact and makes such a difference to a large number of young people's lives, fostering a love of outdoors for life”

## **Emma Wilson (Teaching staff)**

“Country Days has been one of my best experiences in 34 years as a teacher. It has been said so many times already how important the outdoor experience, fun and learning are to the children and how much they benefit. What must be emphasised is just how ambitious, conscientious and authentic this provision is. What a joy to have children, volunteers and staff so respected and cared for while they learn and play together. If only all learning could be like this”

## **Sophie Abdin (Volunteer)**

“I enjoyed being outdoors and helping. I felt really supported by the staff there, everyone was really nice. I found that the children got so much from the activities. I recognised how much the children valued eating, being outdoors and learning together. It was an extremely rewarding experience and I can't wait until the next one”

## **What our families say about us**

"It's hard to find a course that he enjoys and stays focused on and interested in for any length of time. This course kept him engaged and he said he had a brilliant time. Will definitely recommend to others and will be booking again"

"My daughter was a little nervous going on a course for the first time and not being with any of her friends. I dropped her off and drove away feeling worried and hopeful that she would have a good time but promised if she wasn't happy then the next day she didn't have to go! When I returned to pick her up all I saw walking up the field was a great big beaming smile and her first words to me where we have had the best day ever, I loved it, thank you so much for all you do for the children of Bedfordshire! She is already looking forward to next year!"

“My son enjoyed this course more than any other he's been to in the past 6 years. his favourite bits were the rock painting, the archery, the logic puzzles, poetry and making clay models”

"A truly lovely experience; our daughter thoroughly loved it, and can’t wait to come next year! The feedback about the staff was lovely, and I felt better knowing she was well looked after”

“Thank you for a fantastic couple of days! My children had a great time, they made some new friends and the course leaders were engaging and kind. The kids particularly enjoyed holding a newt, archery and learning about different habitats. It was very well organised with lots of different activities”

“My Daughter absolutely loved this and only wanted more! She was so proud of her creations that she could bring home and in particular her finger knitting!!! She loved the pond dipping and clay making and of course the obstacle course. I can’t imagine how you could improve. She really loved writing about it in her notepad and is keeping that safe. Honestly a highlight of her holiday and her sister can’t wait to join you next year!!”

“My daughter had such a fantastic time on the course. She really enjoyed all of the activities and it was great for her to be outside and off a screen! She particularly enjoyed working with clay and pond dipping. She mentioned Izzy a number of times. We will definitely book again - thank you all for providing such a lovely two days and getting them all out and enjoying nature”

“My daughter thoroughly enjoyed both days, talking with enthusiasm about pond dipping, using clay and archery to name but a few activities. Her self-confidence has been boosted & she has learned new skills. As a parent, the course was extremely well organised from drop off to pick up, the activities and the communication via email/social media”

## **Trustees Report**

Country Days Ltd is a single entity set up as a private company limited by guarantee and a registered charity and governed by the objectives listed on the Charity Commission website.

## **Charitable objectives and activities**

To act as a resource for young people up to the age of 11 living in the Borough of Bedford by providing programmes of Physical, educational and other activities as a means of:

A) Advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals.

- B) Advancing Education

- C) Providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for young people living

aged 7-11 living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons.

## **Public Benefit Statement**

The Trustees confirm that they have due regard for the Charity Commission Guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity’s aims and objectives, planning future strategy and setting policy. The work of Country Days is fundamental in improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people in Bedfordshire by giving them opportunities they would not otherwise have.

Research has shown multiple benefits of being outdoors on children’s learning and development, including social, physical and academic benefits. Despite the research children still spend most of their time inside. With the increasing challenge of climate change it is vital that our young people develop an awareness and appreciation of the natural environment which can only be heightened by spending more time in it.

The Leys Nature Reserve at Felmersham provides an ideal learning environment for Country Days with 33 different varieties of trees in woodland, a pond with great crested and common newts, resident ducks and other wildlife and three natural open play areas.

The use of the Leys Nature Reserve, which is used to host the nature courses for Country Days, is freely donated by its owners Esme Watkinson and Helen S E H Orssich, who also act as trustees for Country Days. The Charity has raised funds to maintain it as safe environment for the children and developed it so it is fit for purpose with the addition of rain shelters, landing stages at the pond and 2 science sheds, Admin hut and storage, in order to allow the course activities to take place and accommodate the growing number of places the charity can offer in line with the demand for its activities.

The nature reserve is not run for profit and the owners’ intention is to continue to develop opportunities for schools, voluntary organisations and other charities in Bedfordshire to benefit from using the Nature Reserve if suitable for their activities when it is not in use by the charity, and any fees raised by this will be donated back to Country Days to contribute to the preparation costs of the site for the courses

12

Country Days Trustee Report & Accounts Dec 2023

**Financial Review Accounts December 2023**

The Charity was awarded total funds of £29,010 this financial year from a range of grant funding, donations and community fund raising activities.

The major sources are grant funding from The National Lottery, The Wixamtree Trust, The Carlton Trust, The BEA, The Gale Trust, Kempston Charities, The Miller Charitable Trust, The St John’s Hospital Trust and Bedford Borough Council also provide funding through the HAF programme.

As we expand the remit of our courses, offer more places to more children but keep the teacher to pupil ratio the same, combined with the rise in costs, our yearly budget has risen and the difference of £11,943 between secured funding and the costs been met by funds in our unrestricted reserves.

Currently we hold sufficient unrestricted reserves to meet the funding gap between our costs and the funding we raise and will allow us to expand the charity’s vision to benefit more children in Bedfordshire and increase the use of the nature reserve throughout the year but we recognise that these funds will deplete as the charity expands. We now have a charity committee in place and aim to increase our fundraising activities in step with the growth of the charity.

The trustees recognise that as with all charities there is an uncertainty to grant funding but the trustees have an expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. For this reason, they continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements.

The trustees approve a draft budget for each financial year and any costs which exceed this budget but are deemed vital to the charity are approved by the board. Any capital and core costs over a threshold of £2,000 are sanctioned by the board of trustees on an ongoing basis.
