Activltles and achlevements
Since its establishment in January 2019. the Charity h&5 &2rTied forward the progrwnm¢ of work begun under its
Unin¢orporated knociation predecessor{R¢gd No 1138520). Application to dissolve the UA was made in November
2021 but at the year's end it r¢mained on the Charity Commission ￿giSter. essentially inactive.
In JanU￿Y 2022 the TTUSt suffered a severe blow with the uneXp￿j death of our Chairn)an, and this pmmpted a
rnpid r¢view ofthe Tr￿￿t's roles and workingm¢tho(Is, to ensure effectÈve leadershipand direction of the organization
continued. As a result of the review, one of the trth*es. Dr John Chandler. resigned as a trustee in order to play a
part-time c(Fordinating rol¢ as County Editor. Two other trustees resigned during the year for person￿ reasons and
two new truslees were aptM)inteiL There remain two vacancies on the Trustee b(￿y. which we are actively tying to
fill with people with appropriate skill
In planning its activities for the year under review, the CIO kept in mind th¢ Charity Commission's guidanc¢ on
public benefiL It ￿mained focused on its s￿ted aims of aluc￿Ing the public in the history of th¢ historic county of
Gloucestershire, and advancing reSe2￿h and otherwork in prepar*ion for fithr instalments of the Victoria County
History ofGlouc¢stershire. The relaxation of pandemic restrictions in 2022 made ￿ssIble a new public educational
initiative: the start of & series of workshops forthe general publiq rwi in conjunction with Glouce5t¢r3hire Archives
and the University of the West of England. to provide training in historical research methods. This w&s extsrmely
successful and led to a number of new volunteers coming forward to assist the Trust tn its research activities. We
intend to re￿at it in 2023.
t)uring the year the Charity had five contributing editors (historical resegrchers) under contraeL sUPPOrted by the
work of a w)ol of volunteers whose activities rdnge from cat8loguin& indexing and ￿l￿daring records r¢levant to
CUTrent research projects, to the ana]ysis of records and drafting of text. Steady Pro￿esS was achieved with the
research on the three current projects, which will lead to hardback volumes in the Vietoria County History of
Gloucestershire Series, covering the Yate and Chipping S(Mll)ury area of South Gloucestershire (Vol XIV). the
Cheltenham district (Vol XV); and the cIr￿ceSterd]str1¢t (Vol Xvt). WO￿ contin￿ on all three volLEmes during the
year, and was ¢ompleted on the history of DUntiS￿Vrne Abknts and Dunti5knurne Rous (for vol. XVI) and West
Littleton (for volume XIV). Work 15 in pro￿ on Coaw Preston and outsthnding ￿$￿ts of Cirencester (forvolume
XVI). on Leckhampton and Swindon (for volwn¢ XV) and on Dyrtwi (for volume XIV). Further draft sections were
Plac￿ online for public use and comment ahead of final publication. The migration of wntent frorn the Trust's own
website to the centrnl VCH website nm by the University of London largely completed. Once again, trustee5
were indebted to the efforts of atrhive staff in Mall￿ng a safe environment at the Glouceslershire Heritage Hub
for our reswchers and volunteers alik
The Trust's continuing t&sk is to raise the funds to keep the research going. The fi￿￿S are now in hand to complete
volum¢ XVI (CiTence5ter8nd district) andw¢ have commissioned all the nece&sary work to enable this to be achieved
around the end of 2023. During the yew we receiv￿ ex¢etrtionally gerkerous donations. in excess of £50.000, in
memory of OUT former ChaimiarL and these should enable us to undertake work on the large and complex parish of
Charlton Kings for volume XV. We ¢xp¢¢t to compl¢fr volwnes XIV and XV within about three years. The
success of our fundrnising event at Cirencester Park in September 2021 has encouraged us to launch a similar
fundrnising initiative for volume XIV in 2023. and planning for this took place during the year. During the year we
a150 initiated discussions with interested parti&8about whichareas ofth¢ couirty should b¢th¢ fo¢us of fLrtutE r¢s¢arch
activity once the current volumes a￿ wmpletrd atNI we expect to make de¢isions about this matterduring the course
of 2023.
