President’s Report 2020-2021

We continue to run the two Med Chi’s in Parallel with the same officers to maintain the old bank account whilst the membership subscriptions are being sorted.

My term as President opened on a relatively positive note – we had our first face to face meeting since early 2020 though with some restrictions. It was good to see many old friends joined together. As we look forward to 2021-22, we can hope that this aspect of pandemic living will return to normal, though there is no doubt that it is probably more comfortable joining from the comfort and safety of your living room or study, that journeying out on cold dark nights. Clearly a lot is still to be resolved.

We have had a virtual year otherwise with the following meetings all being online. I am very grateful to all the committee for their support and encouragement during this time, but I want to express particular and public gratitude to Peter Carpenter who has been a rock throughout the year, whose technical abilities have supported us all in sorting out Zoom, in arranging for lectures to be recorded and for then transforming and putting them online. Sam Walker has been a great organiser of the committee, setting up Zoom meetings, faithfully recording discussions in often complex interactions.

The theme for the year was “Education” - I hope you guessed that. We had a variety of speakers, from medical students to the ex-Chairman of the GMC. I am so pleased that the speakers adhered well to the task given to them and kept on target with their topics. Given the year of COVID that we had, we were also fortunate to be able to hear from experts from the ground – from within the society. Nabil Jarad, Monika Blackwell and Paul Goddard treated us to fact filled useful lectures on “COVID-19, the Lockdown and Long Covid. The impact on patients in primary and secondary care settings” and on “Covid New Variants, Covid Vaccines and Re-purposed drugs for Covid”.

Some talks went off the beaten track – two psychiatrists David Mumford and Simon Britten gave talks on “Cross cultural psychiatry” (the Long Fox lecture) and “A motorbike from Bristol to Beijing”, a tale of his

journey with some friends from here to there. All these are available of the Society’s website.

We have also had some discussion with our webmaster Chris Storey, about some alterations to the website to make it more user-friendly and accessible. These have been marked by ennui and disinterest on the part of the rest of the committee. We apologise for this interruption but will continue with this despite the interest.

Part way during the session, I emailed all members with a request to get an update on what members’ views were on meeting together, feedback on Zoom amongst other things. That was presented to the committee and will be appended to this report as Appendix 1. I am very grateful to have been nominated and served as president of the Medico-Chirurgical Society, which spans three centuries of medical life in Bristol, and includes predecessors such Norman Tricks, our most recent Life Member, Alfred. E. Aust Lawrence, also a professor in O&G, Greig Smith and others.

I must thank Paul Goddard who is stepping down as treasurer after many years working tirelessly in different roles for Med Chi. He helped turn the society around when it was collapsing. Lois has joined him in their support and is now stepping down as membership secretary. We will miss her skills with claiming gift aid!

In closing, I would like to wish Jonathan Pitts-Crick, my successor well in his term of office and look forward to hearing the varied programme he has drawn together. Thank you very much.

Report of Hon Treasurer for Bristol Med Chi Society CIO 1181791 Hon Treasurer Peter Carpenter

During the year many of the subscriptions being paid into the old Med Chi have now been transferred to the new.

There was a slight reallocation to categories for 2019-2020 compared to previous report and the anticipated £40 ICO fee put in the 2019-20 accounts turned out to be taken as £35 in the next financial year! So two lots of ICO money was taken in this year.

The accounts for both the old Med Chi and CIO have been scrutinised for accuracy by a person not involved in handling the money.

At present whilst some subscriptions are still being paid to the old bank account and old charity the charity is being maintained and has to keep separate accounts.

As we have yet to move the employment of the Secretary to the CIO she continues to be paid by the Old Charity.
