Chairman’s Report for Year 2021
As we finally come out of the Covid 19 pandemic, at least for now, we can see that the club has weathered the storm in many ways. The club has had to undertake all sorts of additional things that we never imagined we would have
Our Nippers section of the club is becoming very popular – we have a waiting list for people to join us. The pool sessions have transformed our winter offering – we are now truly a year-round club, and we have had between 10 and 18 attendees. We are just about breaking even or slightly in profit for the pool session, which is the benchmark we set for continuing them.
We ran a lifeguard course for 10 participants in a mix of online and in person training, having to adhere to strict C19 protocols that were approved by Surf Life Saving GB. We had a number of persons requalify using the C19 route, but also ran a revalidation for lifeguards in the autumn for 6 candidates.
We got funding last year for manikins for pool and beach training and more boards for the club for the summer season. We ran a successful nipper competition last summer for our own nippers.
Now for the challenges the club will face. Much of the work running the club has been focussed on too few people. We only have one level 2 coach, who therefore needs to attend ALL sessions that are not lifeguard training sessions. We have 2 lifeguard trainer assessors, but one of these is also the level 2 coach. The other challenge is that people we train are not joining us for training, once they have their initial qualifications, so we are losing opportunities for developing coaches, having safety cover for nippers and social events and money. They are also requalifying with other organisations after their initial training – as its slightly cheaper and occurs every other year.
The challenge now will be to widen the numbers of people involved in running the club – both on the organisational side – on the committee – and on the practical side of things coaching at level 2 and trainer/assessors to secure a longer future for the club that is not reliant on a few people.
