There was one overall Winner of £10,000 (which can be in any<br>of the focus areas) and two Highly Commended award winners of £5,000 each<br>(which can be in any of the focus areas).  Also, we reserved the right to award<br>Commended Awards of £1,000 to outstanding runners up.  Schools were<br>invited to explain how they would adapt their bid if they were to be awarded<br>a HC prize.  We did this to transfer a further £10,000 for the minor awards<br>which appeared to be more popular with schools.<br>**Primary Schools Awards**<br>We continued to invite applications from Hertfordshire state funded primary<br>schools.  Due to the much larger number of primaries (compared to<br>secondaries) in the county, each school is limited to a maximum bid of £1,000<br>per school per academic year.  Their applications can be staggered over the<br>year and focussed on a wider range of subjects than is the case with<br>secondary schools.  This reflects the different scale and needs of primary<br>schools and enables us to help a larger percentage of the c400 primaries in<br>the county.<br>**Overall**|

|||We believe schools have the best idea which activities/resources will provide<br>most benefit to their particular pupils at any particular time.  Thus, we believe<br>we provide the most public benefit (enhancement of education) by letting<br>schools propose their own projects and then checking they meet our<br>learning/motivation criteria. <br> <br>The charity thus far had invited applications solely from state‐funded schools<br>in Hertfordshire.  The demand from schools to date seems to be roughly<br>matching the available annual funds and thus, we will continue to solely<br>support Hertfordshire state‐funded schools as opposed to “_state primary and_<br>_secondary schools in England and Wales_” for the foreseeable future.|

|Policy on grant making|<br>Para<br>1.38|**Primary Grants**<br>From September 2019, we split the new awards budget approximately 50:50<br>between primary and secondary schools.<br>We allocated £60,000 to Primary Schools and awarded £57,987 with the<br>remainder staying in the EdufundUK account.<br>For our y/e 31/12/2020, we decided to:<br>•<br>Continue to only have smaller  awards (up to £1,000 per school, per<br>academic year) for primary schools (staggered bids over the academic<br>year permitted)<br>•<br>widen the number of focus areas from secondary’s PE, STEM and<br>Effective Learning to STEM, PE, English, Other Foundation and Effective<br>Learning/Outdoor Education.<br>These differences from the secondary grants policy allow us to help a larger<br>proportion of different primary schools given that there are c400 state<br>primaries in Hertfordshire as opposed to c80 state secondary schools.   If we<br>had Major Awards for primary schools, this would dramatically reduce the<br>proportion of schools we could help in an academic year.<br>In addition, we feel the wider range of focus subjects better reflects the needs<br>of primary schools because their work in various subjects is very often<br>integrated (e.g. centred on a topic theme for the half‐term) and they very<br>rarely have distinct subject departments.  We also think the fast turnaround<br>and swift project implementation of these smaller awards really benefit<br>schools.<br>**Secondary Grants**<br>For our y/e 31/12/2020, we decided to increase the Minor Awards budget<br>from £20,000 to c£40,000.  This required us to reduce the Major Awards<br>budget from £30,000 to £20,000 (One Major Award of £10,000 plus two Highly<br>Commended Awards of £5,000 each).<br>We allocated £60,000 to Secondary Schools and awarded £57,975 with the<br>remainder staying in the EdufundUK account to help fund the following year.<br>There were a number of reasons for this change:<br>•<br>We could potentially help more schools in each of the focus areas.•<br>We believe the shorter application form, fast turnaround and<br>project implementation of the smaller awards is beneficial to schools.<br>•<br>The simple Minor Awards were attracting far more applications than<br>the Major Awards.<br>•<br>There remained an opportunity for schools to bid for a major project<br>(£10,000) in any of the three focus areas with two substantial Highly<br>Commended Awards (£5,000 each) to go towards major projects (also in any<br>of the three focus areas).<br>Our grant policy will remain under constant review for both sectors.  For<br>example, we shall look at the response rate and feedback for our new Major<br>Awardpolicyand we are currentlyconsideringwhether to narrow our five|

|||primary focus areas down to the  three secondary focus areas of PE, STEM and<br>Effective Learning.<br>**COVID19 Effects**<br>•<br>We opened applications earlier than usual(mid‐August).<br>•<br>We “front‐loaded” termly budgets to £30,000 for both sectors.<br>These measures were to help schools with the added costs of adjusting to the<br>mix of home/school learning and the detrimental effects on pupil<br>learning/well‐being of the pandemic.<br>The policy was successful as we awarded £27,873 to primary schools and<br>£17,064 to secondary schools during the autumn term of 2020.  The vast<br>majority of these projects were to develop online learning through hardware,<br>software and training.|

## **Award Administration** 

We have improved the turnaround of application to award for a number of reasons: 

- From June 2020, we switched from posting cheques to bank transfers for awards.  Although this does involve bank charges, it was necessary due to COVID restrictions and safety measures (e.g. handling paper and visiting banks). 

- GM continued to work closely with DB to process applications and administer the charity using weekly online meetings.  Communication with schools was handled effectively via email. 

## **Award Winners Feedback** 

We set up a Google Forms questionnaire for award recipients.  The responses were very positive.  For example: 

- c70% thought the application process was concise and easy to understand 

- c95% rated the communication between schools and EdufundUK as excellent 

- c91% found the website to be useful and informative 

- c60% of projects started within half a term of the award and 80% started within a term. 

- c94% said they were extremely likely to apply for another EdufundUK award. 

- 100% were likely to recommend EdufundUK to colleagues within their school.  c87% said they would recommend us to other schools.

## **For the year ended 31 December 2020** 

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Edufund UK (the CIO) for the year ended 31 December 2020. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity trustees of the CIO you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). 

I report in respect of my examination of the CIO’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the CIO as required by section 130 of the Act; or 

2. the accounts do not accord with those records. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
