|Policy on grant making
(The charity’s grant policy is
summarised as for the benefit of
this report):||**The trustees translate the above objects into the**
**following aim:**
To provide key resources needed either financial or material to
enable children to break out of the poverty cycle to live a fulfilling
life and achieve their potential. This will be done either directly
by the charity or indirectly through local partners for service
delivery and capacity building in their countries and the UK.
**Trustees’ Priorities that pertain to this policy**
Consistent with our strategy and objectives for the next 5 years
and activities agreed by the board are:
Partners that have been vetted and approached by JWCA. Once
identified, the charity will then interview the organisation and
seek evidence of its beneficiaries. Based on this, a decision will
be made as to what aspect the charity can support and the
scope ofthat support. TheTrustees believeits objects provide||

|||considerable scope for expanding the charity’s activities, and a
great deal of flexibility in the type of projects it can support.
JWCA will support all the children’s needs required that fall
under the umbrella of Education, Shelter and health as
appropriate.
In identifying appropriate causes to support, the charity will give
general preference to organisations where there is little or no
other access to substantial help and where there are a
reasonable number of children involved in order for the charity’s
contribution to really make a difference to many.
The charity is working towards shaping its support in a more
niche area in order to specialise its services and will therefore
prioritise such a need all other things being equal.
Our strong preference will be to provide support through
organisations who are prepared to undertake the necessary
casework and assessments of individual need. Only in very
exceptional circumstances will we be prepared to undertake the
necessary casework ourselves. Jacobs Well Child Africa is a
small charity and the general aim will be to help organisations
that work directly with our beneficiaries to increase our capacity.
In future, the Trustees_may_consider supporting an appropriate
organisation which_approaches_ _the charity_for help, providing the
proposal falls within the charity’s Objects (see above), however
we do not have resources to support this yet. Requests for must,
however, always be supported with realistic costings and a clear
explanation of what the project is intended to achieve and how
that fits with the charity’s priorities outlined above.
JWCA offer some grants where service delivery has to be done
indirectly through another agency but not exclusively.
Types of Grants We Will Award
When considering helping our beneficiaries financial assistance
can be in the form of:
a)
A one-off grant e.g. for furnishings for a new children’s
home or school, assistance with school uniforms.
(These are just examples).
b)
A continuing regular grant based on agreed intervals
e.g. annual payment for a building lease, or termly
school fees, monthly groceries for an orphanage. Such
grants will be agreed on a short-term commitment
depending on the need requirements. Trustees will
agree a clear end date in order to protect the ability to
support existing beneficiaries and limit liability. The
agreement can however be renewed with a new end
date. We will also try to be flexible in the type of support
we offer partners.
c)
Grants for health projects e.g. Mental health support,
other general health programmes for beneficiaries.||

## **Achievements and performance**

||Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|In line with
the year
objectives for
2020 – The
charity
achieved the
following:|Jacobs Well Child Africa (JWCA) continues to strive to
meet its planned objectives. In 2020 the following were
achieved:
Following talks with Action in Focus Kenya an
agreement was reached to partner to support 35
children at Victorious Joy orphanage. A previous
partner of the orphanage that been supplying food
regularly pulled out dirung the pandemic and the
situation at the orphanage was getting quite desperate.
These are all orphans ranging in ages 4-17yrs. JWCA
purchased a month’s worth of staple food items for the
orphanage. Items included: Rice, Cooking oil, Porridge,
Unga, Sugar, Salt, UHT milk and Green gram.
It is the intention of JWCA to revisit this, and look into
the possibility of proving food on a 3month rolling basis.
Following an agreement to partner with Street Priests in
Calabar, Nigeria, JWCA purchased 2 first aid medical
boxes.
With the emergence of COVID-19 children on the street
were twice as exposed to danger and harsh treatment
meted out by the public and law enforcement. As a
result, injuries sustained by the children soared and the
centre outreach noticed the cost of first aid care was
increasing daily. JWCA stepped in to bridge the gap of
healthcare needs for the children.
The first box is a mobile box to be carried around when
travelling to meet children on the street with injuries.
The second box is to be a stationery box kept at the
community centre for the children.
In addition to treatment for foot injuries, the medical
contents are also being used to treat symptoms of
diseases such as: Malaria, Typhoid and sprains.
The boxes will service a capacity of 500 children over a
period of 1year at the centre.
In addition, JWCA supported preventative measures to
protect the children from future injuries. During normal
times children on the street walk long distances but the
effect of the pandemic meant they had to walk even
longer distances, sustaining blisters and cuts.
JWCA purchased 200 pairs of shoes (with accurate foot
measure to fit) to protect their feet.
JWCA has received report the combined effort of early
treatment and shoes have meant foot injuries have
dramatically reduced.
Street Priests have also recorded a shift in how medical
needs are reported. The children are now ‘self-
reporting’ as they feel a lot more secure sharing their
health problems, this has been an unexpected
outcome.
The children are also now showing a healthy interest in
the ‘contents’ of the medical box. This has led to local
staff starting to teach basic healthcare to the children
which the charity JWCA, plan to explore further to see
how this interest can be nurtured and developed further
to create even more impact.
JWCA is still trying to find a web site developer as the
initial company pulled out during second lock-down.
charity. The website will engage supporters and donors
more effectively and raise awareness of its causes.
The website will serve as a platform for fundraising and
for showcasing the impact of that JWCA has made to its
beneficiaries of.
The charityhas recruited an additional member Mr Deji|

|A description of the principal
risks facing the charity|||Financial risk:
Current Recession will have an impact on public
donations negatively. JWCA continues to seek other
income sources e.g. Legacies and grants.
Funding from Government & Foundation trusts have
been reduced for NGOs working internationally.
Partnership risk:
Partners having differing long-term goals and
objectives that could conflict with the charity’s own
objectives.
JWCA invest time in researching potential partners to
establish potential risks and to ensure there is a
mission match.
Transaction risk:
Foreign exchange rate fluctuations: The charity only
does transactions through the bank especially where a
grant is being paid abroad. It relies on bank rates.
Grants will usually be paid via the bank in dollars to
mitigate against local currency fluctuations.
Terrorism/fraud: Jacobs Well Child does due diligence
in appraising and deciding on partners inorder to
establish their authenticity. Donors donating of a
certain amount that might look suspicious will be cross
checked under the proscribed UK terrorism list.
Bribery & Corruption:
JWCA ensure all payments go through the banking
system to establish an audit trail. The charity has a
policy against bribery that all trustees are fully aware
of. No grants will be awarded on the basis of ‘gifts’ be
it financial or otherwise.|
|Other|||Global Pandemic:
This is a new addition to the charity’s risk assessment.
International beneficiaries who have been struggling in
extreme conditions have been further compounded by
the pandemic. This means an even higher demand for
the charity’s services whilst funding has decreased.
The charity is being very careful in taking on
commitments to weather this particular storm and is
only offering funding support for one off services until
funding improves.|

end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment.

Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments

**Stocks and work in** Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net realisable value.

## **progress**

Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value based on the service potential provided by items of stock.

Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract.

Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently, they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.

## **Debtors**

The charity has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and **Current asset** cash equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit **investments** and cash equivalents with a maturity of loss than one year held for investment purposes rather than to meet short-term cash commitments as they fall due.

They are valued at fair value except where they qualify as basic financial instruments.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have an impact on the planned activities of (Jacobs Well Child Africa). However, the charity is very proud of its achievements in being able to support children across Nigeria and Kenya last year. The planned new website continues to be delayed as a previously found web builder has decided not to build websites as a business anymore since the pandemic. The charity is therefore looking for a new builder.
