A positive year of achievement for HLMr
As the world moved away from the shadow of Co¥id. The Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust IHLMT) and its
supporters have moved foThward positivety in 2023-2024 via a variety of activities and events..
In Septernber 2023. two more rnidwifery students. Lorpu Wolewu and Patience Dee were offered 8Tants
to cover their fees and essential expenses at the Phoebe-Esther Bawn Colle8e of Health Science5
IPEBCHSI in Zorzor. Liberia. bringing the toial to 10 Siudents feceiving HLMT Brant5. Th4$ was largely
made p055ible by the generosity of our sUPPOrters. The flrst HLMT-sponsored students, Aminata
Sumanie and Suah Valai. are due 10 8raduate in May 2024.

The Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust's mission is simple.. to suprA)rt initial fflidwifery tfaining in Liberia by
making Brants to cover the course-fees and essential study expenses of student midwivès who would not

The Helen loewensteln Memorlal Trust had twelve Trustees at the end of the financial year. They have wofked
as a united team to lake forward the work of the Trust. Between them. the Trustees have worked In the Pfivate,
public and third sectors and bring a formidable range of skills and experience to the Trust. All of them have been
artively involved in the wk of HLMT during the year. or8anisln8 and runnlng events, maklng and dlstrlbuting

and proceduresand giving talk5. TheTrustee commlttee welcomed three new Trustees in November 2023, Esther
Draycott. Mlkey Cottle and Zanele Ndlovu.

On a pratticèl levÈl the Trustees have overseen the development of the HLMT webslte.. clrculated four
newsletters to supporters and set up a supporters, database,. Pllrchased Liberian Lapa materia15,' and tO8ether
wlth supporters. produced HLMT 8feetin85 (afds and uafts for sale. One Trustee gave an extenslve interview
about HLMT on B8C Tadlo.
Some Trustees take on specific work. Harney Goodm3n is HLMT Treasurer, fesponsible. among other things, for
presentin8 accounts, makir* and monitorin8 investments and claimin8 8ift aid. Stella Nickolay produces much of
the trust's publlclty and coordlnates the merchandlse sU￿£0Mmittee. Carol Mccormick. Cella Knlght and PSppa
MacKeSth are also member5 of that sukommrttee. Pippa MacKelth coordlnates the Trust's cruclal data
protection activities. And Mikey Cottle is coordinating our safe8uardin8 poliq and procedures. And Pete
Loewenstein, Geor8e Mayor, Harney Goodman and Stella Nsckolay are members of the grants sub-committee.
The Chalr and Treasurer ensured that HIMT annual report and accounts were independently examlned bv
accountants CA Plus and submittèd to the Charity Commission. They also mana8ed HLMfs di8ltal account.

Supporters - our backbone
From the outset. HLMT supporters have been the backbone of the Trust. Many of them have contlnued to make
donations, sign standing orders, buy HLMT mer¢handise arKI attend online events. Some supporters have
indicated that HIMT Is included In thelr wills. Supporters who contribute regular monthly or annual standing
orders ensure that HLMT has a regular income stream.

Memorandurn of Understanding in 2020. Thefr"rst two mhlwifery students sponsored by HLMT, Arninata Sumanle
and Suah Valai, began their three*ear trainirvd course in 2020 and are due to graduate in May 2024.
As a result of very generous don•tions by some HLMT supporters. we wefe able to supporr an additional four
students in 2021-2022, resulting in Bernetta Kesselly, Dorcu5 Akoi, Janet Davis and Vl¢toria Ballah beln8 awarded
HLMT grants. The student s*l*ction panel always includes Esther Bacon teachers and HLMT'S long5tandin8
representative, Abdul-rahman Bah, a Libersan colleaguè and friend of Helen Loewenstein who has a Ma5terfs
degree in Public Health from Nottingham Trent University. In July 2022 two further 5tudent5, Annie Sumo and
Ruth Harrls. were selected to receive HLMT grants. And in September 2023, Lorpu Wolewu and Patience Dee
began their Studleswlth HLMT5pon50r5hlp. Thls brlw totertthe number of sludents beln8SUPPOrted by HLMT
grants.
All the students meet the HLMT criteria.. they have the appropriate academic qualiflcatlons and they require
financial support in order to enrol on the midwifery ccmjrse. All the students have indicated a desire to pursue
thelr careers In the rural areas where they 8rew up once they quallfy.
HLMT pays the students. tuition fees, accommodation. initial equipment and fees for thelr professlonal
re8lStration exarn. We receive feedback after every sernestef on the 8rades and attendance ol each student, We
are dellghted to report that PEBCHS reports show that all ten HLMT 5tudertts are makln8 excellent progress, all
of them achSevln8 between A or C grades in all subjects.
Liberian midwifery training moved from three*ear diploma courses to four-year de8rees two years a80, and
PEBCHS Is one of the Instltutlons choseft to make an early transltlon to degree courses. HLMT was asked whether
It could support the extra yearf5 trainir¢g for all r15 Students. Including those who had Inltlally enrolled for a three-
vear course. Since four-year de8ree courses wjll become the 8old standard in Liberian midwifery trainirn& HLMT
Trustees unanimously a8reed to support all its sponsored students for the extra year. This adds an extra £9c￿ to
the sponsorshlp costs of each student.
HLMT asked key Liberian stakeholders, In¢ludln8 the Mlnlstry of Health. the Llbefla Board for Nurslng and
Mldwifery. the Liberian Midwives Assoclation and the Phoebe-Esther 8acon College of Health S¢ien¢es, to
formally endorse the work olihe Trust. We are delb8hted to report that all these agencles have done 50.

for a three-year course. Slnce four-year degree courses wlll become the gold standard in liberlan midwifery
trainin& HLMT trustees agreed to 5UPPOrt all rt5 sponsored students for the extra year. Thls wlll add an extra
£900 to the sponsorship costs of each stbjdent.
HIMT asked key liberian Stakeholders, includin8 the Ministry of Health. the Llberian Board for Nurslng and
Midwifery, the Liberian Midwives Association and the Esther Bacon School of Nur5in8 and Midwifery, to formally
endorse the woik of the Trust. We are ddi8hted to report that all these agencies have (lor)e 50.

maternity staff at Nottingham's Cty Hospital Spent two days bakin& sellin& buwn8 and eating a large

would dry up and the Trust would have to be wound upl In order to ensure that grants Can Continue to be made
into the future, HLMT Trustees agreed to.work towards raising sufficient funds In order to invest £2(KJ.¢XX) in
ethical linancial market investments and deposit investments to en5vre the Iong-term financial sustainability of
the Trust and its work." The first £46.CQO was invested in Octobef 2021. This year the Trustees have transferred
a further £50,(KJO into two 12-month fixed-term deposFt attounts in 2023.
The plan *s that il HLMT is eventually able to invesr £2CQ.LUJ. then at an average rate of retum of 5% Ilower on
our cautlous ethical investments than high-risk open-market investments) HLMT will have £lO.OC(I to support
student 8rants each year.
For now. we eontlnue to rely on supporters. donations and events, etc. Havin8 esiabllshed a su¢cessful mode of
operation in Liberia over the pasi three years, we a￿ also looking to support some future students through
grants from grant-making Trusts. The grants SLJb<ommittee Is taking this work forward and has made bid5 to a
number of these Trusts.
Plan5 for the comlng year
The Trnstees plan to continue and bulld on the work of the past year. Iljr hope Is to pro¥4de Irants for two
further rnidwifery students at PE8CHS, while ¢ontinubnB to support the existing students.
HLMT wlll coniinue to urge its supporters and oihers to make donatlons In varlous ways, andlor or8anlse and
support activltles and events andlor approach grant-making trusts for support.
Two HLMT Trustees will underiake a private vislt io Llbefia in May and June 2024. Durlng thelr stay they wlll
attend the graduat￿On ceremony of the first two HLMT-sponsored students and will meet senior representatives
ol key Liberian agencles.
