## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** 

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE LUDLOW & DISTRICT BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION ARE TO ADVANCE AND PROMOTE THE CRAFT OF BEEKEEPING AND GOOD BEEKEEPING PRACTICES AND TO RAISE AWARENESS AND EDUCATE THE GENERAL PUBLIC ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES AND BEEKEEPING TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES TRAINING TO BEEKEEPERS. MEMBERS LIVE IN AND AROUND THE LUDLOW AREA. 

In accordance with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission with regard to public benefit, the trustees aim to make the most of opportunities to educate and inform the public on the importance of honey bees and of the craft of beekeeping when planning the annual programme of activities of the association. 

These activities include: 

- Provision of information, educational material and advice to members of the public about the importance of honey bees in the environment; 

- Provision of information and advice to anyone considering taking up the craft of beekeeping including the benefits of membership of a beekeeping association and the training needed to be a beekeeper; 

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** 

- Regular attendance at agricultural shows, village fetes, food festivals and other public events in the local area throughout the year to promote the craft of beekeeping and raise awareness of the importance of pollinators in the environment. This usually includes displaying at least one observation hive of live bees at each event. Products of the hive are also exhibited. 

- Beekeeper training - a beginners’ course in beekeeping is run every year. 

- Answer enquiries and requests for assistance from members of the public made via the Associations’ web site . 

- Giving talks to groups eg WI, U3A, schools etc interested in learning about the importance of honey bees in the environment and the role of beekeepers in supporting honey bees. 

- In addition the charity maintains and provides contact details of those of its members willing to help recover swarms of honey bees reported by members of the public, free of charge. 

- The charity also has an Asian Hornet Action Team, one of a number of teams across the country who are working with the NBU and the BBKA in the national effort to monitor and prevent the establishment of this non-native invasive species. 

In carrying out the above activities the Trustees of the Association believe they are achieving the charitable aims and delivering tangible benefit to the general public.

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

**Membership** Membership numbers 2022: 168 members 

**Training and education** Beginners’ course 20 22 numbers: 29 students. 

Two members of the Association sat and passed a total of four BBKA Module examinations during the year. 

## **Winter talks and Apiary Meetings programme** 

With Covid restrictions lifted a full programme of talks and apiary meetings was held throughout the year with the aim of informing and educating members on beekeeping issues. 

## **Asian Hornet** 

The Asian Hornet Action Team continued to respond to queries and reports of potential sightings of this non-native invasive species. There were no confirmed sightings in our area. 

## **Shows and Events** 

With Covid restrictions lifted a full programme of attendance at public shows and events was reinstated and included: 

Burwarton Show (attendance 20,000) Tenbury Countryside Show Clun Carnival Ludlow Food Festival (attendance 15,000) Tenbury Applefest (attendance 1,400)
