Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

## **Overview**

Despite the ongoing challenges of COVID, income this year again exceeded the previous year. Online and offline events were held to raise funds, support nature reserve development and nurture the Sun Rising community. Below follows an abridged version of the Trustees’ Annual Report, presented to the AGM on Saturday 11 September 2021. It covers the charity’s main achievements and activities during the year. A PDF copy of the full, illustrated report can be viewed at https://sunrising.co.uk/friends-of-sun-rising/agm-2021/, together with a video recording of the AGM presentation. **The Fund**

**Fund Total:** At the end of the year, the total fund stood at £146k, compared with £107k the previous year. A target fund total of £180k for the next financial year was proposed. **Annual Total** : This year’s income again exceeded previous years. The total for the year was £39k compared with £29k the previous year. This increase was largely accounted for by generous donations on the part of supporters, while income from other sources showed increases too. **Subscriptions:** The number of individuals who subscribe as Friends continues to grow. At the end of the year, the total number of subscribing Friends stood at 301, compared with 269 the previous year. **Fundraising Regulator** : The Friends has registered with the Fundraising Regulator as a mark of our commitment to best practice in this arena. **Legacies** : A new leaflet about leaving a legacy to The Friends of Sun Rising has been produced is now in circulation. **Events**

With ongoing safety in mind, events were held online or live as appropriate. Led by trustees and supported by volunteers, these were all well received. These included: **Online Quiz Night: Feb 2021** : raised £479. **Spring Music Video Apr 2021** : raised £758 to date. **Book Sale** : raised £200. **Roll of Remembrance** , July 2021. This was recorded and published online for a period of time. Although not primarily intended as a fundraiser, £850 was received in donations.

**Children’s Book -** _**So, where are we going exactly**_ **:** This book continues to find an audience. Addressing death as part of the cycle of the natural world, it is proving a valuable resource for 6 to 10 year-olds and their parents.

## **Section E Financial review**

The Friends’ current policy on reserves:

- **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** (a) keep a balance of around £5,000 in unrestricted funds in the current account.

- (b) transfer amounts over £5,000 into an easy access deposit account in order to earn some interest.

   - (c) once the amount in the deposit account reaches an appropriate sum, invest safely in a financial product such as a fixed term bond in order to earn higher interest.

   - (d) ensure that funds are always held with financial organisations that are covered by the FSCS, and that funds held with any one organisation does not exceed the FSCS limit of £85,000.

The purpose is to grow a capital fund to ensure an income for the management of the site as a nature reserve once it is no longer generating an income as a burial ground.

This fund must be sufficient to provide protection for the site, continuing to develop and maintain it as an ecologically valuable nature reserve, and a place which continues to honour those who have been laid to rest there.
