risks tdentrfied are described below, tcoether with the principal ways in wh￿h they are

Most of the Sisters are over state penwon age and the charty has both a moral and
legal obligati¢)n to care for the Communtty's older members. None of the Sisters have
resources of their cAvn as they donate all their eamings, pensions and other incorfft lo

The programme of renewal of the C¢)nvent buihjings in Wantage was started by the CSMV

rellected in the freehold improvements shown in note 10 to the xcounls. At 30 September

Reserves
At 30 September 2025 total reserves were £29.3M {21r24.' £30.9MI

The Communty of St Mary the Virgin at Wantage 7

Report of the trustees Year to 30 September 2025
The charity's tangible fLxed assets. prirtlpamy the Convent site n Wanlage, are recorded al a
net bc(k value of £14.3M (2024: £14.5MI. As these assets are essential lo th8 charity's
activities, their value could not easity be realised lo meet future contingencies. Accordingty,
the tnjstees have set aside a reserve of an equNalent amount.
A primary responsibilty ofthe trustees is to ensure that the charty has sufficient funds for the
fvjlure to allow the Sisters wfv) m*e up the Community to continue their religious lrfe and to
care for thè Sisters as they grow older. Accordingly, the Irustees have sel aside a designated
reserveforthis purpose. The V￿￿e ofthis fund is tevvwed annually using actuarial winciples.
In light of the most recenl detailed review. wh￿h look account of the relatively high and
increasing costs of providing care, as well as the current number of Sisters, the trustees
consider the value of this fund shoukj remain at £4M.
The trustees have earefully consKlered the charity's need for free reswes, i.e. those funds
not invested in tangible fLxed assets or restricted for specffic purposes. The charty will rety
to a large extent on returns frLYn its lllvestrner￿ to gener*e the income required to continue
to run St Mary's Convent in Wantage, to support the Sisters in theircalling and more generally
to carry CSWS charilable objectNes. Taking into account likety future expenditure needs,
other sources of income and ests"maled long4erTn investment retums, the Iruslees consider
that they needed to maintain an investment portfolio worth approxim81ely £1 SM (* current
price levels) in order to geneiate sufftient HKome to sustsin the charity, including caring for
the Sisters in th￿r retirement.
Accordingly. Èt is the policy of the trustees to hobj unrestricted reserve5 represented by
investments of approximate￿ this amount. The value of such reserves at 30 September 2025
was £14.9M {2024.' £16.4M). comprising a deS￿nated Sister5, care fund of £4M and general
unrestrided reseNes held as investments of £10.9M12024." £12.4MI.
Outlook for the future
During the coming year. we h)ok fO￿ard to increasing the pr(oramme of retreats offered in
the refvrbishe(l Retreat Wing and hope to attract more guests on retreat, individu8lly and in
groups. A number of groups. parti¢uLgrly those with a close connection to the Communrty.
are regularty using the facilrties in the Maribel Centre and we hope that this will continue to
grow a5 Other groups become aware of the excellent fxllfÉ￿S and warm welcome.
