GTI 2024 Chairman’s Report
This has been something of a transitional year with a number of post holders stepping down and a number of the posts still requiring more permanent occupancy. Much thanks must go to Anthony, David and Martyn for all their endeavour over the past few years; without their energy and enthusiasm, GTI would not exist in its present form. I shall try to keep this report short!
I have had the privilege of acting as Chair over the past twelve months. I have seen at first hand the way in which our community works to enhance the life of the village and its environs. Foremost amongst the events coordinated by the GTI was the VE celebration on 6th June. The beacon, the choir, and the fly-past marked the occasion in suitable style and the turnout was superb. The series of Christmas celebrations was organised by the usual crew of lumberjacks, caterers and musicians - again, much thanks to all involved. The Car Show and run was threatened by the weather forecast but, in the event it was great success, once again raising valuable funds for the community. Similarly, the Hundred Club has continued to underpin the finances of the GTI. Truth be told, numbers were slightly disappointing this year but the numbers for 2025 already seem to be very encouraging. Members of the community have joined with other villages to enjoy the benefits of the Community lunches - it is my view that the more we do together the better but I am mindful of the distinct and individual flavour of each of the villages.
There have been issues to address and these have included the GTI’s ongoing finances. Sadly, we have had to end the longstanding grass-cutting arrangement with David Griffiths but we are in negotiations with the NT who actually owns the areas of grass in question. There are ongoing concerns about the water quality in the area and this is being robustly monitored by several members of the community. Similarly, the land use, building projects and more general environmental concerns are being carefully watched by local residents. The maintenance of the toilet blocks in the locality seems have been resolved for the immediate future and this is something GTI and LCC have worked hard to secure. Particular thanks are owed to Neil Prior in this regard. I also wrote to the PCC on behalf of the GTI to express our concerns about issues such as Library cuts and the possible closure of the Recycling facilities in ST David’s. I also had the pleasure of writing to thank a number of businesses and individuals for their support for various events ( e.g. Travis Perkins for supplying wood for the brasier, Len Cotton for facilitating access to the site of the bonfire etc, The Ship for providing a D Day Fish & Chips menu and Ian Storrie for the fly-past).
Activities and initiatives such as Book Group, Coffi a Clonc, Cor Y Felin, Ynni Bro Rhian, Welsh Language cultural events, Pickleball, Community Lunches, Defibrillator training, Gazebo hire; The Litter Picking Groups and Environmental initiatives; The Ship hosting Quiz and Open Mike Nights as well as Bingo nights all suggest that the village is a thriving community. The longstanding Arts and Crafts group is flourishing. There is also a very welcome interest in the rejuvenation of the Play area which emphasises the importance of securing facilities for future generations in the village.
Much thanks must go to those who organised the repairs to the Village Hall and the ongoing refurbishment of the Pavilion. Perhaps we need to turn our minds towards securing some power for next year’s Christmas lights?
We do have challenges to face in the coming months: the cost of utilities is not likely to fall, the squeeze on Council resources is relentless and securing our finances is already a pressing issue. There are moves afoot to access grants for projects and GTI has recognised that some of its wider concerns fall more naturally within the remit of the LCC. Already there have been joint initiatives with other villages (such as sharing the D Day Commemoration display with Mathry) and this, perhaps, points towards a united voice as we face economic headwinds. In addition, we need to attract some more post holders. There has been an encouraging increase in the membership of GTI in recent months and this augurs well.
I am sure there are other significant events and activities that I have failed to recognise in this report and I assure those involved that their enthusiastic support of the village is applauded and appreciated.
Robert Kidd (Acting Chair)
