Alm and Purposes
The Guild Churthof St Margaret Pattens exi5t5to promote the gospel In and around the Guild Church and to minister
to Its two associated Ilvery companies, the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers and the Worshlpful Company of
Pattenrnakers. Also to provide a place gf tranqyility and peace to all people and of all faith5 or none in the City of
Lovdon. As such it provides a haven for all who benefit from Its presence in the City open for extended hours, and
it15used by schools lor Educational purposes and other organisations for meetin8s. rehearsals etc. To thi5 end the
Guild Church Councll IGCCI considers that it fulfils its"Public 8eneflV rèmlt.

The GCC is comrnitted to enabllng as many people as possible to worship at the church and become part ol its wider
comrnunlty, Our servSce5 and worship embrace all throu8h prayer, muslc and sacrament and the provlslon of a safe
spate for personal prayer and rellectlon in the busy Clty.
The GCC seeks to provide 5ervlces reflèctln6 the annual cycle of prayer as prescrlbed by the Church of England and
addillonally embfacing a cycle of services lor our two livery companles and has done so in 2025 In an open church
or throu8h the medium of YouTube on the Internet. Therefore. the GCC promotes throughout the year..

To facllltate thlswork the fjcc keeps the bulldlng open to anyone to vislt from 7.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Frldav.

Hill promotin8ihe gospel and Chrlstlan values.
Achl•v•ment and P•rtorman
The GCC holds a servlce of Holy CommunSon on Thufsday throughout the year open to all. There are also occaslonal
services of Choral Evenson8 scattered throughout the year. All are welcome to attend our worship and are
encouraged to become part of the church communily. Services currently are held wilh a mlxture of people
attendlng in the con8regatlon and on YouTube durlng the year, with numbers attendlng holdlng up well.
There are 66 members of the churth on the Church Electoral Roll lste later report of the Electoral R911 OfflceTI. As
the church is sltuated In the City of London where there is liltle residentlal accommodatlon, the malority of the
congregation is from the worklng populatSon, few ol whom live wlthin tht Clty. The weekly attendance is very
varlable as the congregation usually attend In thelr lunchtime and attendance 15 governed by the vagaries of work,
meetlngs etc. (see above)

The church Is open for IndivSdual prayer and conternplation (by those of all falth5 and rnonel daily during the week.

The church welcomes vlsits from primary schools in and around London. The schools visit the church, learn about
key historlcal event5 in the City of London. and leam about the fabric of the church and Its history, Chrlstopher
Wren and the Fire of London. (The Guild Vicar and the Administrator are both DBS checked.?
Counsellin8 is provided by the Guild Vicar and the Adrninistrator. They are available, both by appointment and
open acce5s135 available) to hear peoples, problems and offer spirltual advice and guldance.

The church h35 provided accommodatlon for the Indian Orthodox Church Dn Sundays. they hold a service each
Sunday for resident5 of Indian ethnlc orlBln In Greater London and on other occasions. The GCC Is still forrralislng
the relationshlp and the IOC wlll be at St Margaret Pattens under a Licen¢e under Faculty In 2026, for which
negtstlatlons are beSn8 flnallsed.
It also caters for cholr and brass band rehearsa15 and other uses of the church by communlly groups such as
Alcoholics Anonymous.
Mlnlstry
It has often been dlfflcult to define what a church Is- bulldlnR5, people, Ideas, hlerarthy, those re8ularly In
attendance and those infrequently- all have validity, but perhaps one of the better deflnitlon515 protest and
people 8athered around a table celebrating thè holy mysterles ol the Eucharlst. Thls works well for St Margaret
Pallen5, where Thursday lunchtime 15 very much the focal polnt of the churches Ilfe. Around the moments of the
sacrament are clustered musiclans, 51n8ers, adminlstratlon, meetings, dlscusslons, lauÉhter and disappolntment,
small fabric repalr5, coffee chats, visltors- all held together something qulte beyond us.
The past year has seen not only a holding up ol nurnbers but a Modest increase. The congregation Invariably feels
-quorate.not only for hymn sln8in8. but for welcomln8 new people and visitors. flnding someone to dlscuss or deal
with somethlnÈ. and for calling for a homily. Thanks lor this 80 to all the team. Since the pandemic the cholr has
sun8 weekly, and we are proud and grateful lor all the Dlrector of Muslc doe5, not only for set plecp 5ervlces but
for the beauty of mu5+c on any dull wet February- perhap5 the real acid test of qualltv.
Our Admlnistrator, Barbara Nlcholson, requlres most speclal mentSon. Day by day, working often late, not only
fleldlnB every curlous new requlrernent of her, but malntalnln8 her sense of humour amon8St it all. Money arsd
admlnistraiion kept on top of brllllantly. and always an eye to the bigger picture of finance and well-beinÉ, and
people knowlng a frlendly welcome lies wlthin the vestry. She has especlally battled and achieved profitable use of
the building, iri a competltive and challenBln8 City market. For a part tlme vlcar a tornerstone of the operation.
Money Is a thallenge fof any church. but we have more than kept our head5 above water due to generoslty,
magination, carefulne55 and sound bookkeepin8. Not only the Treasurer, but a diverse number ol people are
responsible for thls nol insl8niflcant achlevement.
The coffee stall provides a daily 50ft boundary with the hectic City, so that our doors are never shut hard durln8
the working week. We are thankful for Ray and Raj for providin8 a startin8 polnt for engagement wlth those
walking by and for an unusual friendly security. Their contribuliun goes cheerfully beyond their rent. It has also
led us to open our baptism and confirmation reglsters agaln thos yèar whith is an encouragement lo all.
Those at a greater distance can now participate throv8h YouTube, whlch Is an improvement on the old
Zoorn connection. Thanks due to our tech Ilterate church warden, and others who 3551st.

The hi8h point of the Friends of St Margaret Pattens year wa5 the summer party, whlch we made also a Patronal
Festlval. Not only are the Friend5 friends of the fabric of the church but under our chair's drive seek to be always
friends of each other. We value the Ilnks they strengthen with the Clty Corporation and the Livery Cornpanles.
The Pattenmaker5 afbd Basketmaker5 have continued to be not so much visitors for special 5ervlces as part of the
fabric of our ongolng life, through personalitle5, through their churchwardens, the museum displays, vestry
storage arrangements, and not least theirgeneroslty. The joint dlrtner after the Carol Service brou8ht things
together aBain particularly cheerfully.
Overthe centurles people have wandered into the thurch, and they continue to do 50 as much today. We seek to
be inclu51ve in both old and new meaning5 of the term. Some of them keep comlng back, sometlme5 for a few
mDnth5 as thelr circumstances determlne, some for 3 few years, and sorne even for decades. What they receive
hopefully should be quite beyond them. I first wandered into the church in 2013, and somehow kept wandering In
and then found myself part ol It. I received somethln8 beyond myself, and certainly more than l ever deslred or
deserved.

The cholr, In 2025, ha5 continued to serve the church by providin8 hlgh quallty music for every Thursday lunchtime
and othèr speclal servlce5. Choir numbers rtmaln stable (typically between 8 and 12 slngersl, with more sin8ers
joining for the speilal sèrvlces and even50n8s, where we perform more varied and challen8in8 rnuslc.
As usual january started wlth È flourlsh of actlvlty beglnnln8 wlth the Eplphany 5ervlce, followed by Klng Chorles
the Martyr and Candlema5. Choral hi8hli8hts Howells Here15 the Lltile Door for Eplphany, the Temperley's version
of The EvenlnB Hymn of King Charles and Eccard's Presentatlon of Chrlst in the temple. On fhursday 13, February
we had a joyful Baptism servlce for Ray Clark and his fvtu¥e daughter-in-lÈw Eleanor, performing Willlam Lloyd
Webber's Prlnce of Peace ma55, Tallls's O lord Glve thy Holy Splrlt, RuttEr's Lead Kindly Llght. concludlng wlth
Herbert Murrlll's Carlllon for Organ. At thp be8innln8 of March we had our Ash Thursday Choral Eucharlst,

At our Music & Readln85 for Passiontlde 5ervlcÈ on Maundy ThuTsday we performed a classlc repertolre In¢ludin8
Jacob Handl's Ecce quomodo. Bruckner's Chrlstus Factus E5t, Blow's Salvator Mundi and lottl's CruclfSxus. On Mav
29, we celebrated A5¢Ènsion Day at lunchtlme with the cholr slngin8 Ascendens Chrlstus by jacob Handl and
Harold Darke's Communlon Servlce Sn F amon6St other thin8s. This was followed by the Pattenmakers, Ascen51on
Day setvice in the evenin8. We 5an8 Wood'5 0 Rex Gloriae and Stanford's Ma8nificat in B flat.
We dedicated our july Eveft50n8 to Hans Rashbrook's rnemory close to the Ilrst anniversary of h15 death where we
were jolned by some of his friends. The music we sang inEluded Alec Roth's Hatfleld Responses. Stanford's Ma8
and N￿nC In B flat, Ola Gjeilo's Ubi Caritas and the voluntary Carillon by Herbert Murr111 whlth pald homage to h{$

In the Auturnn term the cholr perfomied two evensongs. The first was for Michaelma5 seNice including Orlando di
Las50'5 Tibl Christe Splendor Patris and TErtlus Noble's settlng In B mlnor. The second was for St CeEilia and the
mysic Included Balfour Gardine￿$ Evening Hymn, Willian Byrd's Gaudeamus Omne5 and Herbert Howell'5
Colleglum Regale. In October thp Harvest Choral Eucharlst Was celebrated wlth Charles Stanford's Communion
Service in C and Fear not O land by William Harris. Later in October the 8asketmakers' annual service took place
where the choir sang Bruckner's Locus Iste, John Ireland Jubilate Deo in F and Purcell's Rejoice in the Lord alwav.

November Saw our annual servlce of Remembrance and the mvsic included William Harr15's Holy Is the Trve Ll8ht,
Purcell'5 Thou knowest Lord and Burgon's Nunc DimittSs. We were very h3PPV to be joined by Hannah Scales again
on trumpet for this evènt. I was very grateful to Tom Shorter who deput15ed for me as this was the day of my
fathels luneral.
In December we had our Music and Readin85 for AElvent with traditional hyrnn5, readlngs and choral numbers,
which included Gibbons This is the Record of John, Jacob Handl's Ecce Conclples and Charles Wood's O thou the
central orb. At our annual lunchtime Chrlstmas carol service we performed Gold5midt'5 A tender shoot, john
Rutter'5 All the stars looked down amongst other5. For the Livery Festival of Carols In the evenin8, as well as the
usual Chr5strnas carols and readings, we san8 mu5Ic Including john Autterfs There is a flower, Morton Lauridson's O
ma8num mysterium and lan Crawford's Sussex Carol
We have performed a record amount of music this year In tErms of number of services and repertolre. As ever. I
have organlsed a ran8e of social events such as the brin8 and share lunch. pub trlps and drinks and nibble5 after
servlces to faci15tate the bullding of stron8 friendships amon8St cholr members and Increasingly with members of
the congregation. I hope that thi5 will grow next year wlth the support of the church. I would Ilke lo express my
thank5 to all the loyal choir member5 Wlth who I hove worked to cover the music lor all the servlces. This has
meant that the church has been able to enloy choral music at every single service. Our choir 15 unique to the City
In that we are the only amateur cholr that provides all the regular music in such a wonderful Wren acoustlc.
My huge thanks go to the slnger5 for thelr regular and sustained commltment and hope to see the church grow
and dEvelop as a ¢omrnunitv.

There are normal￿ three meetin85 of the City Deanerysynod In the year-one In January or Februarywhen thÉ Lord
Mayor and Sherlff5 are in attendance for the beglnnlng of the rneetin& one in the Summer, and one in October. The
summer meetlng Is usually Evenson8 at the Temple Church, followed èy drlnks in the Masterf5 garden at the Temple
Church.
Representatlon on the Synod varles accordlng to the number of persons on the church electoral roll. For example,
St Helen'5 Bishopsgate, owln8 to it5 lar8e weekday and Sunday £on8re8atlon5, has a larKe number. St Mary-at-Hlll,
our parlsh Church, has two representatives, and Sl Mar8aret Pattens has one.
Apart from Synod buslness. the meetlngs often Include talks and presentations from a varlety of speakers on dlverse
toplcs.

The 8 lanuary meetlng was held at St LaW￿nCe Jewry Church, ISUI wlth the Lord Mayor Alderman Alastair King,
the Lady Mayoress and Sheriffs all in attendance for the first part olthe meetin8.
The Lord Mayor addressed the meetln& Stressing the importance of the churthes at the heart of the C6ty'5 Spiritual
and cultural heritage, as places for prayer and conternplation. for vi51tors to take in a coffee and bask In the beautv
of lunchtime recita15. They are also a hub for different 8roups to come to8￿her, Dutch. Norwe8ian, Romanian,
Orthodox, Coptic amongst others.

Hi5 aims for the Mayoral year included growing tommunities in the City, whith slnce November had seen the Latino

The speaker on the maln toplc, People and Place5, was Charles Saumerez Smlth ICSSI (Former CEO, Royal Aeademv
and forrner direttor of the Natlonal G311eryl. He delivered an interesting presentatlon focusing on the role of 'Craft
Skills, In the maklng of Wren Churchès. related to the next phase of the Ciiy Churthes development in a multicultural
arena.
As an archiiectural hlstorian. C55 outlined how the study of architecture looks not only at deslgn but also aimed to
consider how buildln8s were paid for. the type and source of stone used, the mawns, labourers etc. In the detaSls
of the churche5' constructlon, i,e. not lust the famlliar names but the actual Craftsmen as well.
He reflected on the clrcumstances leading to chanRe and the city folklore- how the devastation of the
Great Fire of London116661 led to Wren's role in developing a plan wlthln a week to rebuild the City wlth the
limitations of maintaininÈ the exlsting street pattern. 87 thurches wtre burnt down and 39 rebuilt wlth excellent
records kept Includin8 Surveys, plans, and accounts.
For emarnple. SU'5 recofds indlcated how declsion5 were made. who was employed and the materlals used, but
malnly IdentlfSed the archite¢ts, and not so often the skllled craftsmen who executed their deslgns.
CSS also explofed the lon8 history ol change Sn bullding use and liturgy and how this shaped the bulldin85 we have
today. In the 1950's the Clty Princlpal Archltect undertook the task to rebylld churches destroyèd or dama8ed In the
December 1940 bomblng ralds Sn the WWII Blitz. Dlffereni decislons were made a5 to the rebulldin8 or use of each
church. SU was destroyed and rebuilt to the Wren design, some were rebullt to more rnodern designs alongside
thèir ancient remalns, whllst others were repurposed In line with post-war sotletal changes. Whether the Great Flre
or more recently City bombings. dlsaster5 have affetted the City churches but Londoners have alway5 remalned
ieslllent throu8hout.
The current focus has now moved to the best way to Preserve the Clty churches, includin8 through the Square Mlle
Churches prolect.
There was a Q&A sesslon wlth CSS and Helen Vi8ors, Iprevlously Wren 300 Heritage Proled Mana8er, now Sqvare
Mile Churches Prolect Mana8erl. Helen outllned the project which runs to the rnd of 2026, with funding secured
from the National Herltage Lottery Fund. All City churches are onboard and partlclpatlng In dlfferent parts ol the
prolect, church ener8y audits, tonseNation plans plus working with schools and the Royal Academy of Englneers to
look at 'Heat SoUr￿s in the City, across 12 churches, of which St. Mar8aret Pattens was one.

Finally, in terms of modem record keepin& CSS advised that èlectronic record5 are not necessarily superlor to
physS(al hord copy, as they are easily deleted, vulnerable to tyber-attack, and often not backed up.
The IB June meetlng was held at the Temple Church, preceded by a beautiful Choral Evensong, and followed bv
drinks in the Temple Garden by the kind inwltation of the Master of the Temple, Robin Grifflth-lones.

to sult thè agendas of dlvi51ve 8roup5.
Dr. Lisa explainEd that hub resources were in development, to create a one-stop page to help all people
flourish. Unconsciou5 bias training is 80in8 to be overhauled. Education In the history of the UK and its place
in the world is paramount, so Individuals are In a posltion of Informed context, relationships and individual
JourFTrey5. A willingness towards repentance and atknowledgement Df mis-steps need5 work and buildlng
stron8 relation5htps to walk alongside people is very important.

In both the lune and October meetings. following the concerns raised in the previous yearfs Deanery Synod

The 2025 accounts have been prepared on the Accrua15 basls as they were in 2024.
General Fund. Unrestrlcted In the year the church spent £136.308 to provlde minlstry Includin8 a total
contribution to Common Fund of £33,500. The amount that the church contrlbutes to Common Fund is based on
multi-faceted formulae and for Gulld Churches with no accommodation for a priest 55 substantially less than for
churihes In the Deanery wlth accornmodatlon for a prlest.
The net result for the year on this Fund was an extess of Income over expEndlture whlch wlll need to be cornmltted
towards rep3lr/iedecoration work already identified by the RepDrting Architect In the 2024 Qulnquennial repart on
the fabrlc of ihe church.
The church wa5 de5iKned by Slr Chrfstopher Wren and Is Grade One Ilsted.
Reserves Pollcv
The GCC'S pollcy Is to hold one yearf5 operating expendlture in reserve Ic£120.CWI to cope with emergencie5 to be

The Guild Church of St Margaret Pattens with St Gabriel Fenchurch is situated on the corner of Rood Lane and
Eastcheap In the City of London.
The church of St Gabrlel Fenchurch was a small church standln8 in the middle of Fenchurch street adjacent to where
the maln entrance to the office block, 31 Fenchurch Street. now stands. The church was destroyed by the Great
Fire of London in 1666. After the Fire it was decided to join together the churches of St Margaret Pattens and St
Gabriel Fenchurch. Thls is recognised by the canopied churchwardens, pews at the back of the nave. one designated
for churchwardens from St Margaret Pattens and one designated for churchwardens from St Gabriel Fenchurch.
The GCC Is a body corporate IPCC Powers Measure 1956. Guild Churches Acts 1954 and 1960, the Church
Representation Rules 20171 and is re8iStered with the Charity Commlssion,. registered number 1181352.
GCC member5 seNe from the date of the Annual Meetin8 (usually held In May) and hold office untll the date of the
next Annual Meelin8 and their names are set out at the be8innln8 of this report.
