## 2. STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Governing Document a brief description of the charity’s constitution such as trust deed or memorandum of association.

Appointment of Trustees: The Chairman Mrs Annette Oliver was appointed for the charity by taking over from her father to continue his work (Mr Albert Figg) on Hill 112 Esquay Notre Dame, Normandy. From working in the past with him to help achieve his ambitions is aware of his wishes still to be fulfilled.

The documentary on Hill 112 which contains actual veteran’s interviews was his last ambition to be achieved. He felt strongly that the Battle for Hill 112 in 1944 has been grossly overlooked and wanted to throw light on the stories told by the actual men fighting in the Battle. They later called the Battle for Hill 112 as the cornerstone of the Normandy Campaign and responsible for winning the Normandy Campaign, to rid the horrendous tyranny of Hitler and his armies.

Mrs Heather Standen, Treasurer, a niece of Mr Albert Figg and knowledgeable with his aims and ambitions by visiting the Hill in previous years by accompanying her uncle.

Mr Frederick Ross, Secretary, a friend of Mr Albert Figg, who again is knowledgeable of Albert Figg’s aims and ambitions by visiting with Mr Albert Figg to Hill 112 previously.

Committee Member: Mr Peter Williams CBE a well-known film producer and documentary maker and is aware of Albert Figgs ambition with making a film on the horrendous battle for Hill 112. He promised Albert Figg that he would make the documentary which he has now completed.

Patron: - We are very honoured and delighted by having the Duke of Edinburgh as our Patron. He is very supportive of Hill 112 and will visit every special ceremony and anniversary. He has previously been visiting the Hill as HRH Earl of Wessex over many years.

Decision Making Process: - We have monthly committee meetings with all trustees and committee member to discuss our projects, aims and ambitions collectively and all come to agreement regarding each event or decision

## 3. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES:

Charitable Objectives: -

The charity’s prime purpose was initially to make a documentary on the Battle for Hill 112, a site of 10,000 deaths over a three-month period from June to August in 1944, during the Normandy campaign. Albert Figg had achieved many interviews from serving veterans on the Hill in 1944 recounting the horrors of flighting on Hill 112. Before his death in July 2017, he was introduced by our local MP to a lovely gentleman called Mr Peter Williams, a well-known film producer and documentary maker who lived near Albert. Peter had promised Albert that he would try very hard to make the documentary.

My father Mr Albert Edward Figg had worked tirelessly in his last twenty years before his death in July 2017 by raising funds and awareness of the Hill 112 and its history, by acquiring a Churchill Tank in 1999, a Statue of an Infantryman in 2016, 112 Hornbeam Trees in 2016 and a 25 Pounder Field Gun in 2016.

Once the tank was placed in position in 2000 a ceremony was held to inaugurate the tank. Albert raised funds for the tank from many, many kind people along the way, including a donation from War and Peace Founder Mr Rex Cadman and Mr Pollard of Paddock Wood Hop Farm.

Then due to a road change by the site of Esquay Notre Dame because of traffic stopping to look at the tank, the road afforded the site an extra piece of ground, which became the Garden of Remembrance in latter 2016.

The Statue of an Infantryman in June 2016 was unveiled in June 2016 on an area near the tank, by HRH formerly the Earl of Wessex.

The Statue was moved over to the garden in June 2017 in the presence of his HRH Duke of Edinburgh a week after Albert died which was very sad, he did not get to see the final place for the statue.

Bartlett Tree Experts, main office in Tampa USA, Ireland and Sussex, offered to acquire and plant 112 Hornbeam trees within the Garden in the shape of a cross. They also agreed to look after them for eternity which we are extremely grateful for along with Odon Cote 112 Association.

Mr Michael Whiteley, Mrs Lyn Whiteley donated the statue which Hill 112 Memorial Foundation which Albert and family were extremely appreciative for their kindness.

The 25 Pounder field Gun was later placed in one of farthest squares, in the order of battle, tank, infantry and artillery upon Albert ‘s instruction. Albert raised funds but Mr Ben Oostra from Holland made a sizeable donation towards the gun.

Albert’s last wish was to make the documentary to which Peter Williams agreed to only a few weeks before Albert’s death in 2017. Peter achieved this wonderful promise, and our first premier was at Kent College in 2022 during the Canterbury Festival. It was shortly screened afterwards by The British Forces Network to be shown on their TV channel during the HRH the Queen’s Royal Jubilee. The documentary also won an International Indiefest Film Award in the History and Biography section, receiving a wonderful trophy.

4. Activities and Performance:

In the year 6/4/23 until 5/4/24, Heather Standen Trustee Treasurer, Fred Ross Trustee Secretary and myself, have attended several military themed shows with the Hill 112 Gazebo bringing awareness of Hill 112 and the atrocities that happened in 1944.

This is mainly from the months of May to October. The Armed Forces Days, The Tenterden Railway 1940- ‘s themed show, Hever Castle 1940’s weekend, The Ashford and Sellindge Show, Salute to the 40’s Sandwich, the RNLI at Greatstone. Imps Headcorn show.

We sell Uniform which has the Hill 112 Logo embroidered, consisting of Tee Shirts and Hats. Also selling Albert Figg’s book: The Ups and Downs of a Gunner, which is his life story along with his time serving during the Normandy Campaign and Market Garden. He was a Sergeant in the 43[rd] Wessex Division, the 112[th] Field Artillery Regiment and was firing with his crew, over Hill 112 with his 25 pounder Field Gun The gun was renowned as the 6 miles sniper, the firing range of the gun.

We also sell DVDs/USBs of our documentary A Canterbury Tale. A documentary with veterans recounting their accounts of fighting on Hill 112 in 1944. Infantry, Reconnaissance, Artillery and Tanks involved, with a major tank battle against the 12[th] SS and 21[st] Panzer Division and the Panzer Lehr Division “Hitlerjugend”, who fought with fanatical courage. An ex-SS Panzer Grendier was quoted as saying “it was his worst memory when fighting on Hill 112 against the British”.

We held a documentary premier in Edinburgh at the Dominion Theatre in February 2023 and attracted many surviving veterans who were in tears at the end of the showing. The Scottish gave us a tremendous welcome and so very supportive of our work. We sold many pieces of uniform and books, DVDs. We also ran alongside an

opportunity to win a wonderful pearl necklace that Mr Peter Williams had received from a local jewellery as a donation for our fund raising.

The premier in Scotland was held on the same day as King Charles announced that HRH Prince Edward Earl of Wessex was given the title of The Duke of Edinburgh. Peter Williams wrote to ask HRH Duke of Edinburgh if he would write a few words for the local press and an article was printed in the Scottish Mail. The profit from this is reflected in our accounts as £3000.

We have now many friends and supporters in Scotland.

Throughout the year Mr Fred Ross, Trustee and Secretary of the charity gave short talks about Albert, his endeavours and the brief history on the Battle of Hill 112 with a short video of Albert our marketing agent Mr Malcolm Triggs has woven together. Our leaflets are handed out and Alberts book the Ups and Downs of a Gunner, the DVD or USB of the documentary are sold. He has also worked with many branches of the Rotary Clubs, Thanet, Canterbury, Weald of Kent, the RBL branches and Masonic Lodges.

Mr Nick Cowels , IMPS West Kent Secretary with other members of the Imps (Invicta Military Preservation Society) providing 30 WW2 jeeps taking airside pilot/crew/staff transport and public for jeep rides during the Battle of Britain Aero Legends Air show at Headcorn, Kent, raising a 1000.00 from the show for the Hill 112 charity. Also, donations from other shows and runs they have with their jeeps during the year.

The Imps are a great friend of the charity, being made initially during Alberts lifetime whereby they made him an Honorary Member.

The charity is also friends with the Vehicle Preservation Society created again by Albert when alive, with the Chairman Mr Ian Hawkes and General Secretary Mr Simon Bromley.

We held our 3[rd] We Will Meet Again Military Show on the 19[th] and 20[th] August 2023. The show has many people involved. Mr Michael Whiteley, sculptor/artist who created the Statue of the Infantryman on the Hill and has created many other items for the charity to be sold for profit. i.e. Propellers, Silhouette of a rifle and helmet for the Hill. Hayley, Lyn Whiteley, Andy Sheen and several friends in placing all the exhibitors and traders and marshalling. Mrs Heather Standen Treasurer attends to the gate monies each day over the weekend and accounts. The Chairman does all the paperwork for all exhibitors, traders, entertainers, etc plus all PL insurance and risk assessments. Fred Ross Secretary compares the show and handles the Hill 12 Gazebo. Mr Nick Cowels runs the jeep rides, other Imps members help with ticketing, marshalling and helping where needed.

Attending the show were reenactors, with their Military Vehicles and Living History Groups reacting a special part of the Battle for Hill 112. Educating the visitors with their knowledge and showing them the actual vehicles or equipment used. We have 1940’s entertainment to give atmosphere and we have an eclectic array of stalls displaying either1940’s goods with some modern themes. Our Hill 112 Gazebo is in attendance raising awareness of Hill 112 during 1944 and giving out our own leaflet and selling our merchandise. The footfall is steadily increasing every year with over 3000 people this year. This year’s profit was 3719.04. All proceeds go to our aims and objectives for Hill 112.

We have initiative by having plaques made for the relatives who had loved ones who served on Hill 112 during 1944 and/or since died. The plaques carry an inscription from the family of the veteran with their name, Division and Regiment and the date of birth and date of death. We usually have engraved alongside the wording a posy of red poppies. To date, we have 14 plaques but endeavouring to achieve 112 plaques, one by each tree. They are dark brown Corian and engraved usually in white lettering and the red poppies alongside.

Every year on Hill 112 on June 5[th] a small service is held to remember the veterans and old soldiers who fought on the Hill but have since died. We have many supporters arrive and we are often supported by Deep Respect another organisation in France who has supported our work in Normandy and for my father.

In July the Sunday nearest the 10[th of] July another service is held to remember and honour the fallen and the start of Operation Jupiter 10-11[th] July (one of a few operations during the battle for Hill 112). We often retire to the local Salle Des Fetes to share a glass to honour and celebrate our fallen heroes.

Our Fund-Raising Events totalled 11,799.10 for this year from April 2023 – 2024.

Odon Cote 112 has display boards 14 in total explaining the three-month battle and all who were involved. There is also on Hill 112 an explanation table again explaining the regiments and divisions involved.

## Financial Review

The trustees aim to maintain sufficient reserves to allow the charity to continue its regular annual activities and are aiming to provide contributions to maintaining and improving the memorial in Normandy. Reserves at the end of 2024 were 16,325.81.

Our principal funding sources are showing the documentary in as many places as possible, attending many military shows or country fairs to tell the story of Hill 112, Fred Ross to give talks and small film shows to as many organisations or associations

as possible. To investigate organisations or companies for obtaining donations for the charity and for help financing our yearly show We Will Meet Again. Our donations for this year totalled 7498.34 which included a donation from St James Place, London.

The total of our merchandise sold was 2511.03.

For the trustees to also continually find different ways of achieving funds. This has been achieved thus far by Walks, Luncheons with a guest speaker, charging for Jeep Rides, selling our uniforms and DVD/USB, Alberts book. A 1940’s dance, a ball, continually attending other military shows and air shows.

## Risk Assessment

One of the areas of risk faced by the charity is the restriction on the general public’s pocket. Times are getting tougher for everyone, and we must respect that. We must try to find different ways of achieving funds and not place our risk for monies to one or two objectives. We must continue to investigate different ways so mitigate our risks.

## Plans for Future Periods

The Trustee’s aim is to continue to provide education of the events of the Summer of 1944 during the Normandy campaign through events, shows and talks and to support in the remembrance of the fallen during the campaign.

So, for the year 2024-2025 we will continue to advance the knowledge of the history of Hill 112 and the veterans who gave the ultimate price. With it being the 80[th] anniversary of the Normandy Campaign and the Battle for Hill 112, we will be having large ceremonies on Hill 112 in June and July 2024. Fred Ross will be achieving a walk on the South Downs Way. We will continue showing the documentary and attending many shows, cand holding our own show in July 2024.
