Annual General Meeting 25th January 2023

About The Wayz...

The Wayz is a fun, safe and welcoming place for young people from across Bracknell Forest to attend. There are a variety of projects available in order to cater for a wide variety of young people. These young people attend in order to enjoy and partake in leisure time activities, as well as gain the opportunity to try new things. We feel our role is to support and empower them through their own development; through a consistent and positive pathway of new opportunities, challenges, experiences, training, self– reflection and awareness. All of which is designed to develop each young person in regards to their own needs and aspirations. This provides an arena to help support young people gain the confidence and understanding when dealing with current issues and challenges in their lives.

Current Projects Running consist of:

Juniors, Inters, Seniors, Chill Out, Hang Out, Day Camps Activity Scheme, Volunteer Programme, 14-17yr old Offer, Community Programme and our Mobile Youth Hub, working in schools and detached within the community.

The Wayz has continued as an offer which enables and empowers young people to engage and take ownership of a number of responsibilities. The young people continue to drive the programmes which are important to them. Through activities and informal discussions, the young people contribute in identifying topics and create a programme which helps tackle the challenges but also offers opportunities for young people to attend and have fun. Through discussions the young people have held individually, or as a collective, they have identified their own focus areas; as well as the impact on the community around them. This promotes engagement and prevents young people being excluded from the group or programme. The Wayz strongly believes young people have interests so it is important to encourage young people to exercise that interest in some form which integrates the group and benefits and supports their personal, social and educational development. It has been a very different and challenging year. Our offer has allowed our team, young people and community to witness some great events, activities and contributions from our young people and supporters. We hope that this highlights the potential to other young people and community stakeholders of the opportunities which are/can be offered by The Wayz and its young people.

Chair of Trustees Report

Following on from the Covid outbreak we are still trying to find the new normal. We have for many, many years seen the pressure on recruitment and the retention of key people in young people’s lives. Add this to the unelenting reviews of public service and reorganisations, young people have struggled to find those key adults in their lives who can serve as that point of reference as a listening ear or to offer a safe space.

At The Wayz the staff have offered that continuity and reassurance, not just throughout lockdown but consistently over the last 66 years plus. This pays great tribute to the leaders, staff and trustees who have continued to deliver the best possible service. Alongside the delivery and day to day management, the team have continued to collect data in order to justify and support funding, which, over the years has had to expand to keep up with demand. We have always been proud of the continued relationship The Wayz has secured with Bracknell Forest Council and Bracknell Town Council and long may that last. The work we have been doing with schools, Health and trusts just goes to pay tribute to the hard work, dedication and great offer the team at The Wayz, can and is making for the young people of Bracknell.

Every year I pay tribute to the hard work and tenacity of the whole team and this year has been no different, as a trustee and on behalf of all the trustees, parents, supporters and commissioner I want to say a big thank you to the team for their perseverance, professionalism and enthusiasm.

The annual report goes some way to offering you an incite into the year, the highs and the lows. What all of this is made of is relationships and trust, challenge and adventure. We have over several decades been able to support young people in the way they need and the community gets behind and supports.

Each year brings new challenges and opportunities for the team, who find new and innovative solutions, thank you for your support I look forward to next year and a new set of adventures.

Youth Worker’s Report

Through this period we have seen our service and work with young people continue to transition back into a pre-Covid offer. Whilst there has been continued restrictions in some areas there has also been a number of programmes going back to our usual activities and trips.

Due to the need through Covid , we continue our detached and 1:1 Support work. This enabled us to continue to work with schools, professionals and community groups to support, partner with and direct our work.

In September we re-launched our membership year, seeing lots of young people return and start with us. Numbers have been refreshing during this period, however we did see number fluctuate at the beginning of the year before reach a consistent number. Members really engaged with a range of activities including the planning of trips. Our activities across sessions included: Cooking and preparation of food, developing and maintaining relationships, personal safety in the community, work around drugs and alcohol, sports and general youth club activities.

We have seen

454 Different Young People and 2115 different engagements.

As well as evening sessions we have seen Day Camps run as normal throughout holiday periods. Again this has had a good level of engagement with The Wayz supporting the Holiday and Activity Scheme (HAF) which enables young people to access positive activity and food through school holidays.

During the holidays, we offered a range of activities for 13-17yrs, including beach trips, go-karting, Thorpe Park, Graffiti, sports, Aldershot lido. This was well received with good engagement throughout. This again, was support HAF which the council reached out and asked us to offer a youth provision. 215 young people engaged through this year in our holiday programmes.

As part of our Mobile Hub, we have delivered over 300 hours of detached in the community and in school. 266 Young people have actively engaged with our workers. This work includes ‘checking in’ with young people and promoting opportunities. Our teams engaged with young people in their spaces and supported on a number of approaches. Some young people were still struggling with the transition back to school, getting into low-level trouble in the community, creating structured activities in the community. And encouraging into programmes.

Youth Worker’s Report

Our work has been very strong with schools and professionals, we have delivered youth work support through schools and the community, providing a range of approaches to support behaviour and wellbeing. We have seen a huge rise in 1:1 referrals over the pandemic and this is still apparent in schools now. This year we have support 47 young people being referred from professionals and parents, along with the schools in Brakenhale, Garth, Easthampstead Park, Edgbarrow, Sandhurst and Holly Spring School.

Our Volunteer Programme has continued, with new young people coming along to get involved. We delivered Youth Achievement awards as an alternative to our Leadership Programme. Young people engaged well with this and could work at different levels varying between Bronze and Silver.

Unfortunately we were unable to offer our usual Fun Day and other community events, due to the restrictions. However we still provided a range of opportunities for volunteering through our sessions, Day Camps and maintenance.

We have continued to work with partners across Bracknell to optimise the offer and resources we have. We have to share thanks to those who have supported our offer during this period (names on back page). During another uncertain period we have be able to regrow out of a unprecedented period of time and ensure young people have the access to opportunities and support around their Social, Educational and Personal Development.

The Wayz has again, continued to support young people across Bracknell Forest, on many occasions our team has demonstrated the commitment we have to ensuring a range of safe, fun and engaging activities are accessible to young people. I would like to extend a thanks to the staff, committee, volunteers, partners , families and especially the young people for a great year.

Statement’s

YP

I joined the Wayz to grow confidence and feel part of something. When I first became a volunteer I was very shy and didn’t have much confidence, I now feel able to communicate with others and comfortable in the group surroundings. I have made many friends and feel part of the Wayz family:). I have also had an insight to my career choice so I feel grateful to be part of this!

My daughter suffers with HUGE social anxiety. Gareth & Chelsea worked above & beyond to settle her in, and now she looks forward to attending, and is making friends. This is a girl who has hidden in her bedroom for 2.5 years, no school, no friends, due to this crippling condition. Absolute miracle workers! As a parent, I cannot thank them enough. Do I recommend The Wayz? 100%!!

Parent

Gareth has been supporting Daniel now for a year. The support Gareth has given Daniel is brilliant he has and is helping Daniel progress so much. When Daniel first met Gareth he was struggling with life and every day things. Gareth has been there for Daniel to listen and suggest helpful ideas that Daniel try’s to do each day.

Daniel looks forward to seeing Gareth he always seems to be happy and positive after. Without Gareth this year Daniel would of struggled more. Daniel knows that if he has a problem he can talk to Gareth which helps.

Gareth also gives me support too with Daniel because I have had a few problems with Daniel and Gareth has helped us both.

Acknowledgements and How to be involved?

As a centre, The Wayz is highly reliant on community investment and genuine support towards our intentions, focus and young people. When I refer to investment it is obvious financial investment is reassuring, however it is often the investment in people’s time and openness to work with us and commit to our young people. The Wayz has made a great impact towards the community and young people over the years, with each year getting stronger. Whilst we hope for this to continue I think it is important we recognise the contributions made over the past 12 months.

As our offer moves forward we welcome support and input from others to ensure the quality on offer to young people. If you would like to be involved in supporting us, we are very happy to explore this with any individual or organisation that may have something to offer our projects. We are very proud of our members, volunteers, staff and supporters and are excited moving forward. For more information please refer to the contact details above.
