Slough District AGM- 8 July 2024

## **District Chair’s Report 2024**

This year has seen some real highlights in our Slough District, as we continue to grow from strength-to-strength post Pandemic. One of the most notable events of the year was the 2023 “Big Help Out” that was held at 3[rd] Upton. On that day we were pleased to welcome members of the Royal family who really got “stuck in” to the numerous tasks that needed to be done. That event garnered some wonderful publicity and attracted young people and adult volunteers to Scout groups across the district.

Following on from that event we held the 2024 Big Help Out at 2[nd] Cippenham where a large number of volunteers were able to carry out much needed work on the scout hut and grounds. And to improve on our standing within the community (to improve on the fantastic PR we attracted in 2023) we’ve invested in some new gazebos which you will soon see out and about at carnivals and fetes across Slough as well as at County events.

The Scout Movement is exactly that - a Movement – which “spurs us” all on to face new challenges. This year we have seen the biggest change in the Executive and uniformed Roles for many years. It’s rather exciting, especially given that Slough is one of the lead districts to make this happen. The new Trustee Board will concentrate on the key elements around Finances and Health and Safety (risk) and it will work alongside the district support teams headed up by the LV Team.

The district is currently supporting a number of groups where their resources are low, for example Chairing 2 groups in Slough with a view to recruiting new people to expand their capability. The LV are also covering multiple roles to support other groups so if you’re reading this and need help, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will try our best to find a solution path for you.

We have had some challenges with our treasurer which has left us with no support to carry out the accounting duties this past year. My thanks go to Harrison for assisting with our finances and getting us to the AGM where, I’m glad to say, we have a set of scrutinised accounts for review. We also now have a new Treasurer which is fabulous news.

This year our long-standing Secretary has decided to stand down. We will be sad to see Viv go. She has been an administrator/Secretary within Groups and the District for some 15 years and has been a part of my team since I took on the Chair role. I’d like to personally thank Viv for all of her support over the years and wish her all the best in the future. Thanks again.

Leaving the Exec, but not going very far, are a number of team members whose roles now fall under the support team umbrella/new Bubbles. I’m certain that they will be an enormous asset to the district in their new roles and I would personally like to thank them for all the time and effort that you have volunteered to the district Executive over the years. Thank you, Pat, Nathan, Tim, Ian and I wish you all the best for the future.

The AGM will be the districts transition to the new Trustee board and before it changes, I’d like to thank all of the current Executive. You all have worked tirelessly over the years and most certainly deserve the district’s thanks.

My thanks to the Lead Volunteers for their support this year.

Here’s to another successful year.

Bruce Clark - Slough District Chairman
