2020 was another flourishing year forThe Hygiene Bank. We saw growth across our key metrics rèsulting in 152
active projects across the UK supporting 1,400 cornmunity partners and delivering over 363,000 kg of personal
and hygiene products.
As With otherorganisations up and down the country, we faced the headwinds that were presented to U5 by the
pandemic. We moved quickly to ensure the safety of our 409 volunteers and changed our collection and
distribution Strategy, so we were able tts confidently deliver products to our new and existing community
partners. Our partnership with Boots UK played a key role in supportin8 local communities with their major
product donations and by helping us collett donatlons from the public via drop off points in their stores.
In the summer of 2020, the 8o¥rd of Trustees met for its annual strateglc away day. The objective L¥f this dav
was to deflne our vislon, misslon and value5 as well a5 agreè on our prioritlsed 5nltiatlves to under pin our three-

national schools programme, collaborative partnerships and resilience in our 152 projects across the UK. Wlth
thaL we are focusing on fundraisin8 and seeklng to ralse the Issue of the Inlustlce of hy8lene poverty.
In September 2020 we launched the UK'S first National Hygiene Week. The oblectlve of that week was to raise

Projects
Our prolects touched every corner of the UK providing
tremendous re3ch, establishing regional partnerships and raising
awareness that hygiene poverty is close to home. Last year our
volunteers not ornly delivered seven times what they had done in
the year prior, they also more than doubled the number of
ommunity partneTS we serve. This ensured thousands who were
experiencing hardship could access washin8 up liquids for their
homes, nappies for their babies and new toothbrushes for
everyone in the family so no one had to share. Projects raised
approximately £216,000 which was reinvested back into local
omrnunities, allowing them to purchase the exact products thelr
comrnunity partnerfs cllents needed durlng these challenglng

Destigmotising being unoble tifford to keep cleon
Hygiene care was a prevalent eonver5ation in 2020. Everyone was suddenly expected to have access to PPE and
personallhousehtsld hygiene products to protect oneself, their family and the community from transmitting or
tatthSng Covid-19. Meanwhile, Millions experienced decreased wages due to furlough. reduced hours, job loss,
higher utility costs from home schoolin& and additional unexpected expenditure.
In both soclal media and the press we created new conversatlons about the impact of hygiene poverty in the UK
and how to take artion. In particular we launched National Hygiene Week in 2020 which gained significant local
and national attention, wlth toverage from Metro.co.uk, Thè Big Issue, 88C Radlo 2. Edlnburgh News and other
media outlets. In December 2020 Boots UK chose to feature The HygSene Bank in its Christmas advertlsement to
raise awareness about the millions of people who are struggling to afford the basics. Since 2019 we more than
doubled our reach, with over 24.000 followers across our social media ¢hafinels, plus over 70 local project Social
media accounts.
Adam's Story.
Adam struggled to afford the bH51C5, Including hygiene products Every time we mEt. I noticed he was not able
to keep clean and it was affecting his 5elf-esteem. As hls Key Worker, I knew he was going to school 18% of the
time, and most of his frlends were online. When we meet up. he rarely looked me In the eye and was not
interested in much conversation. I felt not bein8 able to keep clean was affectln8 hi5 confidence and it was
important he had access to hy8iene products, 50 1 began to search online for charitie5 whts provlde personal
care item5 and came across The Hygiene Bank. This was In the summer of 2020. The local project very quicklv
provided e55enti815 1 was able to turnaround and give to Adam wlthout much fanfare as he had not requested
them in the first place.
The next time I saw Adam I ba￿lY reco6nised him. The transformatlon was Immediate from his appearance to
his attendance in school rising to IQO% to hearin8 of new friends he met up with in per50n. He did $0 well in
school he went onto universlty and l am happy to report is doing really well.
The Hy8iene Bank 15 3 great resource for our youn8 people, it allow5 them to be able to spruce themselves up
to be spick and span at a time when money is tight and toiletrie5 are financially out ol their re.ach. To be able
to feel clean and fresh 15 8 nice thing and It is somethin8 that 15 expected of people.
From an Advisors perspective it can be a difficult subject to discuss wlth our young people and simply having
the resource available make5 thlngs easier for us in our work.

Pre-Covid-19, a vast majority of our product donatlons came from the publi¢, so ¢>nce rnost of our drop off po1nts
were no longer accessible, our donatlonsfrom the public reduced drastically. We arted quSckly to deliver hy8lene
products to local communitles across the UK. It was critical our fotU5 shifted to working With brand partners to
gather donations and simultaneously raise funds to purchase products.
In 2020, we saw endless goodwlll and compassion for those who faced difficult decisions such as paying for
heating or being able to buy cleaning supplies for the home. We are keenly aware there wlll be many more
struggling financiBlly and in need due to the pandemic, especially when the furlough scheme ends. As we
transition out of lockdown, we will continue to asse55 the strategic implications as we refine and improve our
oper3tional model moving forward.
Focusing on the impart of Covid-19 will be essential to ensure we provide support to those most in need. We
know the pandemic has hit areas of deprivation hardest. A5 the economic impact is better understood it is likely
that demand for The Hygiene Bank will be greater.

19. Our response to Covld-19
Our The￿ork is powered by volunteers movin8 around their community. collecting donated products Irom drop
offs point5 in their locality and dlstributing them back to community partners. Many of our projects are still
active but at reduced capacSty In accordance with Government and Public Health England guidelines.
Closureof businesses which hosted our collection point5. individualsworking from home. and rationed shopping
at the beglnning of lockdown meant product donations decreased significantly. In response, we pivoted quickly
and reached out to numerous brands to request product donations. We are fortunate in that their response has
been positive and we have been able to get products to those of u5 In need. For example, our retail partner
Boots have glven the charity over £2m of e55ential products.
These brand donatlons come bulk and on pallets so we had to find new way5 of operating as many ol our local
projects are run out of our volunteerfs homes who cannot receive a pallet of products, Instead we directed lar8e
volumes of goods to be sent directly to 5choo15 in areas ol dÈprivatlon Isuch as Blackpool. Leeds, Birmln8haml
and communlty hubs set up by local ¢ounclls to support growlng numbers of those of us who have been swept
Into poverty.
We also have collectlon polnts In over 245 Boots stores across the UK.
We are aware that there wlll be many more ol us than before struggling financially and in need. We have
continued to operate the evolved operatlng model working ¢l¢sely with various brands to accept and distribute
brand donatlons to as many of our projects as posslble.
