Chalrfs Report
Season 2023- 2024
1. Introduction
The recent season has beon the first o)mplete one that wè have hèld slncè thé dlsTUPtlon caused, firstly by the impact
ol the Covid pandemic and then by the major thanges in the membership of th8 managing committee. Additionally there
has been the change from holding concerts on Friday evenings kn late aftern¢x•n on Sundays. There h8s been a lol for
us all lo laarn and to adjust lo and things hav6 not ah¥8ys a8 8moothly as the Swoty had b9Gome used to but.
navgrthelgss, the season was, I believe. relatively successful.
There arg further issues that we need lo addre$8 and probb8m$ thal need to bo resofved whith present an existential
threat lo tha Society. Ajso wo have started to develop a ¢low relationshlp wtth Music at Duf￿￿1 and wè n66d to work
out how far that should go lo t*nefit both societies.
2. Membership and attendance
Sincè wa started holding concerts on Sundays 8ttendanc* ha8
been quite variable. The concert in April 2023 on a Sunday which
featured members of the London Mozart Pl8yers attracted an
audience of around 90 bul att8nd8no ha$ beon through thbs
18s186ason #s shown in the adjacent chart.
In Iha pa$1 we hav0 offored Society membgrship al 8 8m811 charg8

fallen signifieanlly this last sèason. and recognising olher pr8ssuros on her She will not continue salès of cards in thè
coming season. We thank h8r very muth lor the signfficant contribution she has maje lo Society funds through her
offorts and also for the contribution to the lrfe of the So¢￿ty that the presence of the s819s table at the back of tha room

6. The seasons past and to come.
This has been the first fully planned season that we have held since the disruption caused by the covid pandemic, the
impact ofthe need lo move away from the Kyadice of holding ttficerts on Frmjay ev8niNJs. and the Changes in personnel
within the Committee. We are very gr8tefvl lo Katherine Jenkn'nson for the wlxk she had to put into putting together
8eason of six concerts. These have, on thè whole, been very satis￿.ng and rt has been a little disappointing that we
have not alw8y8 had th8 attendance tt)at they déserved to have. Ther8 are $8veral possible feasons for this:
Holding a ¢>Jnc6rt too near to Christmas cffl the 1P of DecÉmb&r was a mistake.
The move to a Sunday may not have been Fryular. ￿11? any change of timing S￿11 abNays put off some It will,
and I believe has. bfoughl in others piefor not having to be out so late of an evening. This is something we
can rgview over the coming soason aThJ invite your (¥ynmonts but our options for altern8tNe tim88 am rather
restricted.
OUT wncort publicity may not havg hil as it shouhd. In order to eontrol ts)8ts we have moved lowards more
use of electronic communication. We have built up an email database of interested people and use this 10 $8nd
out programme notes in advanca of concerts father than to wsl paper programmgs to mgmbgrs as we did
before. This saves th8 significant costs of postage and Ihe work required in PrePar￿$g these mailings when we
are undèr prassure of resources. W6 have continued lo display FM)slers at various locations in and around the
dty. Kathèrine Boyes has takèn C*)ntrol of the website and is leaming how bast lo manage il and she has Gfeated
and maintained an In8tagram aceounl for the Sociaty. We need to continue to develop our publicity proc4s50S
and find w8ys lo raise the profile of the Socbety in the ar8a.
The C￿lc8 of perfomers and programm8s may nol have a￿y$ begn appealing. In my vl8w the programmes
were vary satisfying. Had I had any conc*ms it might have been for the Iwo harp ￿nCert yel that turned out lo
be a most inloresting. abS￿bIng and gnjoyat4e evening. W6 gave opp)rtunitss for bcal perforn8fS IKalhryn
Monleiro and Lucy Nolan) and had on overwhelming perfomance of Pictures from an Exhibition by Vidor
Maslov plus the IhoToughly enjoyable evening the Aquinas Piano Trio. So I do not think thal we have failed
lo provide a s81isfactory season bul would welcome any ojntrary vièws.
An 8ncourAglng f88lure of the 8ea8on w88 8a6ing an inu888ing number of youryJ pooplo in the audlènea and then
seeing them coming back a se0￿d timo. Th￿ 18 an eno)uragement to us to find ways of Intt6881ng our app881 lo the
younger gener81ion.
Our main chall8ngo to tho continuity of Ihg Society 18 around ts rosc￿re@ availabl8 for the Committee. Apart from tho
retirement of Mike and Jenny Elliott and David Phypers during the prev*)us season arKI acknowledged in the last annual
report. Mike Wild and Vivien Wilson have also slc(rtJ th)wn from ￿ ta$k$ thay did for the Society. Vivi8n has begn
responsible for compiling Ihe programme from notes and olher material provided for hèr and submitting the master lo
the printers. Mike ha8 been the front of hou8e man for many years ond hos also playéd a majoi part in putting out thairs
ahead of concerts. I thank them both very much for the long servic• they have given to the Society but we have to
recognise that they have loft gaps. FurthenrvJre Kathryn Hey wishes to stand down from her ro￿$ as Sg¢retary and
concert d8y hogt and I would like Io sland down as Chaimian. This mgans that we n6ed new people lo come foTwaTd to
help with running the Society, otherwise we will not be suslainable. One way that we are working to improve sustainability
18 lo work more closely with Music 8t Duffield. While we intend to maintain our respective Klentities and constilulional
Independance we will work togelh&r lo share resources and publicity and encourag9 our rèspectNe audiences to attend
each olhgT's con¢efts and there 1$ evidénce of this in our naxt planned season.
7. Concluslons
On behalf of the Society I wish to put on record our thanks lo those who have helped in njnning the So¢i8ty this last
season. Sevgral people have helped with vari￿$ la$k$ on the day ol ￿ncert$ including Gwen Schaffer and Eidys Smith
who helped with refreshmwlts. Ashley Smilh who with setting out, and Ausbn Smrth who issued programme8 at
the door.
We also thank Mike Wheoler for providing his usual very detaik8d and inf(wm8tive programm8 notes whith are 80 much
appr￿ated by our audience and for the fgviews he also produce$ after each concert.
Finally I wish lo thank the Committee fry all the work they have done in supporting this season and the Society in
general.
